  • In solid propellant rocket motors, $Al_2O_3$, one of combustion products, can be accumulated inside a combustion chamber. A special rocket motor was designed and tested to simulate thermal reaction of rubber insulator affected by the deposited slag. We successfully demonstrated through a dynamic radioscopy that the slag was deposited at the location as designed. In this paper we present a new test method which can simulate a high temperature and pressure environment in combustion chamber to evaluate material characteristics of rubber insulator and can provide design data to decide its thickness for a new solid rocket motor. The solid rocket motor, which has an average chamber pressure of 770 psia and a burning time of 50 seconds, was tested. The results show that erosion of EPDM insulator is more affected by a gas velocity rather than by the thermal reaction of slag with a high thermal capacity.

  • Liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen rocket engines with highest specific impulse have been developed since the 1950s and used until now to maximize the capability of space launch vehicles. Domestic liquid hydrogen infrastructures for the production, transportation and distribution are being expanded at world-class level with the rise of hydrogen economy, which is a great opportunity for the performance enhancement for indigenous space launch vehicles. In this paper, feasibility of applying liquid hydrogen as a propellant is investigated in various aspects. The status of domestic liquid hydrogen infrastructure, the technologies required for liquid hydrogen engines, and operational aspects for safe handling of hydrogen are reviewed. In addition, test facilities for developing hydrogen engines are introduced briefly.

  • In this paper, we describe the contents of the achievement of basic experiments for manufacturing and evaluating a micro-rocket using solid propellant, as the device of the micro thrust generator which can be used for attitude control of satellites. We try to analyze performance of the rocket through visualization of the motor jet, and adopt various ignition methods to obtain confidence in ignition problem. For this purpose, we develop and test two different types of thrust measurement system.

  • New concept ramjet propulsion system with liquid bipropellant rocket using "Green Propellant" hydrogen peroxide for launch stage is proposed. In this novel concept, hydrogen peroxide gas generator produces hot oxygen at launch stage and kerosene injects to this jet in combustor. For basic study of this new concept ramjet system, investigation of auto-ignition characteristics and combustion of decomposed hydrogen peroxide and kerosene was conducted. In various test cases, auto-ignition and stable combustion was verified. The combustion temperature of 400°C and Fuel/Oxidizer mixture ratio of 0.6 were the limit of auto ignition. Through the experiment results, the possibility of novel concept combined propulsion system using hydrogen peroxide gas generator is ascertained.

  • Solid rocket propulsion systems are generally used for tactical missiles due to the structural and operational simplicity. Nevertheless, various kinds of design factors including outer diameter, length, weight, loading efficiency of propellant grain effects to thrust performance. Dual thrust is beneficial to range extension and terminal velocity increasement. But loading efficiency becomes low in case to obtain dual thrust performance by burning surface control. So, It is predicted to be reasonable to obtain dual thrust performance with high/low burning rate propellants. This study is on internal ballistic analysis and ground test to confirm dual thrust performance.

  • KSR-III is the first Korean sounding rocket propelled by a liquid propellant propulsion system and it has been developed over 5 years using purely domestic technologies. The propulsion system of KSR-III is a 13-ton class see-level thrust liquid rocket engine(LRE) which utilizes liquid oxygen and kerosene for its propellants and employed pressurized propellant feeding and ablative cooling system. The problem of combustion instabilities which has brought the most difficulty in the development was resolved by implementation of a baffle. Through the development of KSR-III LRE, meaningful achievements have been made in the core technologies of LRE such as design of injectors and combustion chambers and test, evaluation, and control of combustion instabilities. The acquired technologies will be applied to the development of higher performance LREs necessary for future space development programs such as Korean Small Launch Vehicles(KSLV) In this paper, the development of KRE-III LRE system is described including its design, analyses. performance tests and evaluation.

  • For the successful development of 75-tonf-class liquid rocket engine, a plenty of tests on each engine component have to be performed and this is equally true for a combustor. However the test facility which is in operation at Korea Aerospace Research Institute lacks its capacity to perform fire tests of a 75 tonf class combustor at its nominal thrust. Since the test facility has to be ready prior to the start of development tests, it is very urgent to establish the test facility. The preliminary design of a test facility for a 75 tonf class combustor which was performed according to such a necessity is described in the paper.

  • Elastic-viscoplastic structural analysis is performed for regenerative cooling chamber of liquid rocket thrust chamber using Bodner-Partom visco-plastic model. Strain rate test was also conducted for a copper alloy at various temperatures in order to get material constants of visco-plastic model used in the structural analysis. Material constants of visco-plastic model were obtained from strain rate test results and visco-plsstic model was incorporated into finite element program, Marc, by means of user subroutine. The structural analysis results indicate that the deformation of cooling channel is mostly caused by thermal loading rather than pressure loading and confirmed structural stability of the cooling channel under operating condition.
