  • Water rocket is a pressurized liquid propellant rocket that shares the same basic principles of space launch vehicles. Water rockets can be used as an engineering educational material for the liquid rocket principles and the launch vehicle systems, far beyond the scope of K-12 level science education. In this paper, the principles and theories of water rocket propulsion and flight dynamics was investigated at the level of undergraduate rocket engineering classes. Also, the system level design and operation of water rocket is summarized by including the components of launch vehicle, launch pad, payload and recovery as well as altitude measurement methods.

  • In this study, we proposed a water rocket CULV-1 (Chosun University Launch Vehicle-1). Unlike a conventional water rocket, CULV-1 can perform the booster rocket, fairing, and payload separation like an actual launch vehicle and also the imaging data acquisition. The conceptual and critical design of the proposed CULV-1 have been performed considering the operation characteristics. The verification tests have been performed from subsystem to system level in accordance with the established test specifications and verification procedures. Through the final launch test of the flight model, we have verified the design effectiveness of the proposed separation mechanisms for water rocket applications and the mission requirements of the CULV-1 also have been complied.

  • Since the successful launch of Sputnik 1, a rocket engine was evolved rapidly. The first artificial satellite Sputnik has only 182 lb mass with a size of a basket ball, a modern artificial satellite is over 10 tons. As the size and the mass of an artificial satellite increases, the stronger launch vehicles are required. However, the story is different in the field of the rocket engine development. In the early to mid age of the space race, rocket engine study was focused on the stronger and bigger engine development, but from the 80's the tide has changed. A rocket engine must be strong and also economic. This trend was accelerated from when a rocket launch was used commercially. In this study, a capability of the launch vehicle and engine was investigated to provide a reference for a liquid rocket engine development plan.

  • Upper stage of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II) uses a 7-tons class liquid rocket engine and is an open gas generator cycle with a turbopump supply method that uses kerosene/liquid oxygen as the propellant combination. This study first provided a brief overview of the design and development process of the upper stage engine. In addition, it introduced the solutions and results applied to some of the problems that occurred during the development process of the upper stage engine.

  • KARI is achieving the KSLV program according to National Space Technology Development Program. In this paper, the authors are intended to introduce the Integrated Power Plant (abb. IPP) test facility which will be constructed for the variety of tests on KSLV program. IPP test facility refers to comprehensive testing equipment for liquid rocket launch vehicle. Using this facility, KARl can verify the adaptiveness of parts and subsystems for launch vehicle and finally can qualify the system characteristics of launch vehicle doing kinds of test including hot firing test. Using this facility, KARI can simulate the vehicle launching circumstances and it make to predict the performance of launch vehicle when its flight test.

  • There has been significant increase in demand of launch opportunities from the small satellite sector that represents the new space era. Providing smallsat-dedicated launch service at an affordable price is a new business model many startup companies have pursued, which requires innovative solutions for cost reduction in combination of low cost components, volume production and optimized manufacturing. We set out a preceding study at KARI to develop a suite of critical and cost-cutting technologies in preparation for a two-staged small launch vehicle development, based on the liquid rocket engine technologies developed from the Nuri program in accordance with the 3rd master plan for national space development. In this work, we introduce the concept of a two-staged small launch vehicle that aims to be innovative and cost competitive for small satellites, and describe mission design results including staging as well as overall vehicle configuration of the launch vehicle.

  • It is a known fact that much effort, time and cost are needed to develop a new launch vehicle. Among the many components consisting of the launch vehicle, a rocket engine is a one of the most important and difficult part to develop in which many risks may lie dormant because very active chemical reaction occurs inside the engine while the engine is also required optimum ratio of the mass and performance. This research focused on the risk mitigation to develop the rocket engine using the example of recently developed US rocket engine.

  • The rocket motor of the space launch vehicle offers thrust for satellite to enter into the orbit. Characters of the solid propellant for rocket motors are affected by the space conditions such as vacuum and space radiation. The solid propellant used for such a purpose should not undergo physical, internal ballistic and energetic changes when exposed to vacuum and space radiation. This study describes the development of the solid propellant composition for the rocket motor of the space launch vehicle. Also, experimental study was conducted on supersonic diffuser in order to verify the performance of the solid propellant composition which was applied to standard motor on the ground in the vacuum condition.
