Shear load transfer characteristics of rock-socketed drilled shafts were analyzed. The constant normal stiffness (CNS) direct shear tests were performed to identify the major influencing factors of shaft resistance, i.e., unconfined compressive strength, borehole roughness, normal stiffness, initial confining stress, and material properties. Based on the CNS tests, shear load transfer function of drilled shafts in rocks is proposed using borehole roughness and the geological strength index (GSI), which indicates discontinuity and surface condition of rock mass in Hoek-Brown criterion (1997). The proposed load-transfer function was verified by the load test results of seven rock-socketed drilled test shafts subjected to axial loads. Through comparisons of the results of load tests, it is found that the load-transfer function by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurements, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer of drilled shafts.
The load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the 2D elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Slippage and shear load transfer behavior at the pile-soil interface are investigated by using a user-subroutine interface model (FRlC). It is shown that the coupled soil resistance provides the influence of pile toe settlement as the shaft resistance is increased to an ultimate limit state. The results show that the coupling effect is closely related to the value of pile diameter over rock mass modulus (D/$E_{mass}$) and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load ($R_s$/Q). Through comparisons with field case studies, the 2D numerical analysis reseanably presented load transfer of pile and coupling effect due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.

It is common to use the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of intact rock to estimate the shaft resistance of rock socketed drilled shaft. Therefore the most design manuals give a guide to use the UCS of rock core to estimate the shaft resistance of rock-socketed drilled shaft. Recently, however the design manuals for highway bridge (KSCE, 2001) and of AASHTO (2000) were revised to use the UCS of rock mass with RQD instead of the UCS of rock core so that the estimated resistance could be representative of field conditions. Questions have been raised in application of the new guide to the domestic main bed rock types. The intrinsic drawbacks in terms of RQD were comprised in the questions, too. As the results, in 2002 the new guide in the design manual for highway bridge (KSCE, 2001) were again revised to use the UCS of rock core to estimate the shaft resistance of rock-socketed drilled shafts. In this paper, various methods which can estimate the UCS of rock mass from intact rock core were reviewed. It seems that among those, the Hoek-Brown method is very reliable and practical for the estimation of the UCS of rock mass from rock cores. As the results, using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion a modified guide for the estimation of the shaft resistance of rock-socketed drilled shafts was suggested in this paper. Through a case study it is shown that the suggested method gives a good agreement with the measured data.
Rock socketed drilled shafts are used as foundations for bridges and other transportation structures because of their load carrying capabilities. However, only limited information is available in the literature on the effects of roughness on the unit side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of drilling tools on the socket roughness in soft clay shale in Texas. Field study showed that the drilling tools, auger and core barrel, produced different roughness in the boreholes.
Based on recent studies on rock socketed drilled shafts, it was found that the side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts is affected by unconfined compressive strength of rock, socket roughness, rock types and joints, and initial normal stress. Especially, the socket roughness is affected by rock types and joints, drilling methods, and diameters. Since existing roughness measurement systems could be conducted only in the air, a new roughness measurement system, which can measure rock socket roughness in the air and also in the water, is needed. However, the development of new roughness measurement system fur civil engineers has been faced with difficulties of electrical applications. In this study, the laboratory verification system far BKS-LRPS (Backyoung-KyungSung Laser Roughness Profiling System) was developed, which can be applied both in the water and air. Based on the laboratory verification, it was found that the improved BKS-LRPS could define effective measurement distances for the conditions reflecting the apparatus and in-situ situations.

Experimental model studies were carried out to evaluate the end condition for drilled shafts by applying elastic impact on the top of the shaft, which is one of the various methods using stress waves. Typical impact responses corresponding to the various end conditions including free, fixed, rock-socketed, and soft-bottom with good and poor side contact conditions, were investigated. In order to simulate these renditions, mock-up shaft models made of cement mortar were used. Small-scale laboratory experiments were also performed, and field tests were carried out for the shafts that were socketed into weathered rock. It is found that the rock-socketed condition and depth of penetration into rock ran be identified from the reflection at the interface between the soil and rock in the waveform. The soft bottom rendition can be identified, only when the side contact between shaft and surrounding rock is poor, whereas it cannot be identified when the side contact is good because the waveform is similar to that of fixed end rendition.

In this study, using constant normal stiffness(CNS) direct shear tests, side shear load distribution were analyzed by the influencing parameters of unconfined compressive strength, surface roughness, confining stress, and material properties. Based on the CNS tests, side shear load transfer function of drilled shafts in rock is proposed using geological strength index(GSI), which indicates discontinuity and surface condition of rock mass in Hoek-Brown criterion. The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the mass conditions of rock with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. However, there are few available data and little guidance in the prediction of the end bearing capacity of drilled shafts socketed in weathered/soft rock, considering rock mass weathering. Therefore, a database of 13 load tests was constructed first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions(e.g. Em, Eur, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greather than 0.7 in most cases. Additionally, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.

Based on recent studies, the side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts was affected by unconfined compressive strength of rock, socket roughness, rock types and joints, and initial normal stress. Especially, the socket roughness was affected by rock types and joints, drilling methods, and diameters of pile. In this study, a new roughness measurement system (BKS-LRPS, Backyoung-KyungSung Laser Roughness Profiling System) usable in water was developed. Based on the laboratory model tests, an EMD (Effective Measurement Distances) according to various turbidity was proposed as EMD=$1149.2{\times}T^{-0.64}_b$.
As the use of drilled shafts for foundation of a large size structure increases, the evaluation of the reliable bearing capacity of the pile has become important. The purpose of this study is to verify the reliability of bearing capacity equations for drilled shafts socketed in weathered rock by comparing the bearing capacity values from static load tests with values from bearing capacity equations. In this study, twelve data from static load test were selected from four field sites, and the data of load test and the properties of weathered rock were analyzed. Three methods widely used in practice were selected for analysis, namely the AASHTO method (1996), Carter & Kulhawy method (1988), and FHWA method (1999). The comparison of the bearing capacity values from the bearing capacity equations to those obtained from load tests showed that the Carter & Kulhawy method (1988) was the most reliable in giving conservative design values and smaller COV (Coefficient Of Variation).
