Total displacement under non-reinforcement is a quantitative index of rock mass behavior during tunnel excavation and depends widely upon geological characteristics. The primary purpose of this study is to suggest a rock mass evaluation method, well representing tunnel behavior during excavation, according to rock type. A 3-D numerical analysis was carried out, with consideration of the shape of tunnel section, excavation condition and so forth, in a sedimentary rock-based tunnel, and total displacements under non-reinforcement according to rock mass class were calculated. Finally, quantification analysis was carried out to assess correlation of the total displacement with RMR parameters. As the result, a modified RMR system fer quantification of rock mass behavior during tunnel excavation is suggested.
Hydro-environmental impact assessments (HEIA) in tunnel constructions have been performed through various methods including preliminary investigations, field tests, numerical simulations, and monitoring. Specially, it is very important to evaluate quantitatively groundwater inflows into tunnels as well as drawdowns caused by tunnelling. Obvious definitions between porous and fractured rock media in hvdrogeologic properties of study regions must be needed to execute HEIA for rational tunnel construction in fractured bedrocks. In this paper, we propose a HEIA on tunnel constructions in fractured rocks media resulted from various hydrogeologic field tests and numerical models on given regions and determination of systematic order, i.e. the technical road map (TRM) of HEIA. These systematic HEIAs are expected to be usefully applied to base data in tunnel construction in fractured rock media.

A concrete lining of NATM tunnel is the final product of a process that involves planning and evaluation of user needs, geotechnical investigations, analysis of ground-lining interaction, construction, and observations and modifications during construction. The designer must consider the lining in context of the many function, construction, and geotechnical requirements. Also, the loss of supporting capacity of shotcrete lining due to poor rock qualities and shotcrete erosion must be considered. The values, shapes, and estimating methods of rock load and water pressure are very different with every designers. Estimating methods of rock loads used in the design of NATM tunnel concrete lining are investigated. Numerical analyses are done in various conditions. And the rock loads estimated from radial stress and plastic zone are compared respectively.
Soil and rock improvement and reinforcement techniques are applied to achieve safe tunnel excavation in difficult geological conditions. The Umbrella Arch Method(UAM), one of the auxiliary techniques, is used to reduce ground permeability and improve stabtility of the tunnel by inserting a series of steel pipes into ground around the crown inclined to the longitudinal axis of the tunnel. Additionally, multi-step grouting is added through the steel pipes. UAM combines the advantages of a modern forepoling system with the grouting injection method. This technique has been applied in subway, road and utility tunneling sites for the last few years in Korea. This paper presents the results of analysis of the case studies on ground movements associated with UAM used in the Seoul Subway line 5 constructon site. Improvement of tunnel stability and decrease of ground settlement expected with pipe insertion are also discussed. Finally, the method to minimize ground settlements caused by NATM tunnelling are suggested.

With increasing the number of tunnel constructions, more reliable analysis methods for tunnel excavation is needed to accomplish technically sound design, and stable and economical constructions. For this purpose, a series of construction procedures, which include excavation and support stages of tunneling, need to be considered. In this study, therefore, rock-support response behavior due to railway tunnel construction has been examined by using analytic methods and numerical calculations. For examining rock-support response behavior, the effects of shotcrete, thickness and time of installation have been considered. Through analytic and numerical calculations, it is shown that support pressure becomes higher with increasing the shotcrete thickness and stiffness, and hence the tunnel deformation tends to be stable. It is also important to notice that there is a significant effect of shotcrete installation time on the tunnel deformation, although no significant change in support pressure is observed.
The deep underground High Level Waste (HLW) repository to dispose of 36,000tons of spent fuel from the reactors in Korea needs about $4km^2$ repository area. In this study, the deep undergrond repository layout was optimized to minimize the excavation rock volume as well as underground repository area. In the optimization, the results from thermal analysis were used to define the influence of tunnel and deposition hole spacings on repository layout. The repository area and excavation rock volume could be reduced with longer disposal tunnel length. When it is necessary to reduce the repository area with satisfying thermal criteria, it is better to reduce tunnel spacing and increase deposition hole spacing. In contrast, the excavation rock volume can be reduced by increasing the tunnel spacing and decreasing the hole spacing.

Electrical resistivity prospecting has been recently increased in the application to tunnel, landslide and other investigations in the civil engineering field. Therefore, it is essential to establish the rock mass classification technique using electrical resistivity data. In this paper, the authors, try to propose a technique which can classify tunnel rock mass using seismic wave velocities derived from electrical resistivity data. In addition, the applicability of the proposed tunnel rock mass classification technique is discussed, by comparing estimated support patterns with actually performed ones.
In this study, stress difference between isotropic and transversely isotropic rock mass, and planar principal stresses at the periphery of the tunnel in the rock with various ratio of anisotropy were determined theoretically. Stress differences between isotropic and anisotropic calculations at crown. side walls and floor of a tunnel with assumed stress states were analyzed and compare each other by $FLAC^{2D}$, a finite differential element method. As a result, magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the case of ignoring anisotropy were different from those of anisotropic cases, whatever the stress state was. Stress difference increased as the ratio of anisotropy increased. Direction or anisotropy affected stress difference, especially in the cases of anisotropic directions of $45^{\circ}\;and\;135^{\circ}$ of counterclockwise from x direction.
The influence of round length on the tunnel stability and construction cost is well acknowledged by many researchers and engineers but the coherent procedure is not available for its determination. In this study, the behaviour modes of the face and unsupported span was investigated for weak rock tunnel by a small scale model test, PFC3D and FDM analyses in consideration of the round length. Total five types of behaviour modes are defined and quantitative estimation of the behaviour modes was established in terms of the safety factor for the face stability and the conditional chart. Although the proposed method has some restrictions, this method can provide useful information for the optimization of the round length and excavation, especially in design stage.

It is very important to survey in construction for acquiring informations about geological structure which influence the tunnel construction. Usually, TSP(Tunnel Seismic Prediction) one of the seismic survey method in tunnels in Korea has been used for prediction of geological condition ahead of tunnel face, but in this study HSP(Horizontal Seismic Profiling) was used. As a result of field application, we predicted that there exist rock discontinuity such as fault, joints and bedding planes. In addition, RMR value from rock mass evaluation coincided with that from seismic survey for rock condition. We compared with rock classifications and evaluation results for proving.
