The destruction and fracture of rock masses are crucial components in engineering and there is an increasing demand for the study of the influence of rock mass heterogeneity on the safety of engineering projects. The numerical manifold method (NMM) has a unified solution format for continuous and discontinuous problems. In most NMM studies, material homogeneity has been assumed and despite this simplification, fracture mechanics remain complex and simulations are inefficient because of the complicated topology updating operations that are needed after crack propagation. These operations become computationally expensive especially in the cases of heterogeneous materials. In this study, a heterogeneous model algorithm based on stochastic theory was developed and introduced into the NMM. A new fracture algorithm was developed to simulate the rupture zone. The algorithm was validated for the examples of the four-point shear beam and semi-circular bend. Results show that the algorithm can efficiently simulate the rupture zone of heterogeneous rock masses. Heterogeneity has a powerful effect on the macroscopic failure characteristics and uniaxial compressive strength of rock masses. The peak strength of homogeneous material (with heterogeneity or standard deviation of 0) is 2.4 times that of heterogeneous material (with heterogeneity of 11.0). Moreover, the local distribution of parameter values can affect the configuration of rupture zones in rock masses. The local distribution also influences the peak value on the stress-strain curve and the residual strength. The post-peak stress-strain curve envelope from 60 random calculations can be used as an estimate of the strength of engineering rock masses.
The purpose of this study is to identify the collapse characteristics by analyzing various factors causing collapse based on field survey and existing data on rock slopes occurring in the construction of roads and industrial complexes in Gyeongsangnam - do area. In the case of the slope where the slope has been directly surveyed, the analysis of the collapse characteristics can be used for the prediction and prevention of slope failure through the continuous collection of the slope data, database construction, management and analysis. The evaluation items used in the collapse characteristics of slope were selected among the items that can be regarded as objective evaluation items among the overlapping factors by comparing the evaluation items frequently used for the evaluation of the existing slope stability among various factors. The type of destruction of the rock slope depends on the type of carcass of the bedrock, such as planar fracture, wedge fracture, onho fracture, and conduction fracture, which are different from each other. And the slope stability analysis should be performed accordingly.
Recently, with the development of high-performance processing devices such as GPGPU, a three-dimensional dynamic analysis technique that can replace expensive rock material impact tests has been actively developed in the defense and aerospace fields. Experimentally observing or measuring fracture processes occurring in rocks subjected to high impact loads, such as blasting and earth penetration of small-diameter missiles, are difficult due to the inhomogeneity and opacity of rock materials. In this study, a three-dimensional dynamic fracture process analysis technique (3D-DFPA) was developed to simulate the fracture behavior of rocks due to impact. In order to improve the operation speed, an algorithm capable of GPGPU operation was developed for explicit analysis and contact element search. To verify the proposed dynamic fracture process analysis technique, the dynamic fracture toughness tests of the Straight Notched Disk Bending (SNDB) limestone samples were simulated and the propagation of the reflection and transmission of the stress waves at the rock-impact bar interfaces and the fracture process of the rock samples were compared. The dynamic load tests for the SNDB sample applied a Pulse Shape controlled Split Hopkinson presure bar (PS-SHPB) that can control the waveform of the incident stress wave, the stress state, and the fracture process of the rock models were analyzed with experimental results.
In the applications of rock mechanics or rock engineering including drill and blast, drilling and mechanical excavation, the fracture toughness is an important factor. Several methods have been proposed to measure the fracture toughness of rocks. In this study, wedge splitting test specimen which is prepared with ease and tested under compression loading was used to obtain mode I fracture toughness of rocks. The equation of stress intensity factor through numerical analysis is proposed from the stress state of crack tip considering both vertical and horizontal loads due to the vertical load acting on the wedge. The validity of the wedge splitting test method was confirmed by comparing the mode I fracture toughness values obtained by the GD and SENB test specimens.
This study presents a newly suggested test method of Mode II fracture toughness measurement called "Punch Through Shear Test" which was originally proposed by Backers and Stephansson in 2001. The purpose of this study is to check the validity of the suggested testing method by performing Mode II fracture toughness tests for Daejeon Granite. In addition, the optimal specimen geometry for the testing and the relation between Mode II fracture toughness and confining pressure were also investigated. Fractured surface was observed to be very smooth with lots of rock debris which came off fracture surface which obviously implies that the surface was sheared off. This confirms that Mode II fracturing actually occurred. In addition, numerical analyses including continuum analysis, particle flow code analysis and crack propagation simulations were performed. Results of these numerical analyses indicated that the cracks occurred in the specimen were predominantly in Mode II and these cracks led to failure of the test specimen. From this investigation, it can be concluded that the newly suggested "Punch Through Shear Test" method provides a reliable means of determining the Mode II fracture toughness. fracture toughness.
Groundwater flow in rock mass is controlled by the fractures developed in the area. So, the conductive fractures are very important for groundwater flow in crystalline rock. This study aims to find out the characteristics of the fracture distributed in granitic rock in the northern part of the Yusong area (latitude $36^{\circ}24'18"~36^{\circ}25'08",{\;}longitude{\;}127^{\circ}21'00"~127^{\circ}23'23"$). The electric and EM surveys were carried out in the site to delineate the fracture the fracture zones. Since geophysical survey provides non-unique solution, hydraulic data and dilling log data including BHTV scanning were used as complementary data to achieve the objective of this study. Electric survey(DC) arrays used are schlumberger and dipole-dipole arrays. VLF is used for EM survey. The main charcteristics of the fracture developed in the study aera are that fractures associated with basic dyke cut corss the main fracture zone in NNW and play an important role as hydraulic barrier. In trun, groundwater table in the upstream area is lower than that downstream area.

The deep excavation work in Korean downtown is almost excuted near by existing structures and utility lines because of the diminution of available yard for construction. So, it was required more and more that the accurate control of displacement on the earth retaining system for minimizing the popular complaint and the damage from constructional accident. Automatic monitoring system is adopted in fracture zone for real time monitoring. In addition, Face mapping is carried out on the face of fracture zone according to excavation sequence. As the result of automatic monitoring system and face mapping, we was able to take the necessary reinforcement and changing excavation method within suitable time. This paper is informed about a stability case on the deep rock excavation site with fracture zone in urban area by automatic monitoring system.
Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to various fields of rock and civil engineering. But most researches covered mode I behavior, though mode II behavior is dominant in rock engineering. Until now, there is only one ISRM suggested method for mode II toughness of rock. A new SCC (Short Core in Compression) mode II toughness test method was developed considering 1) application of confining pressure, 2) easiness of notch creation, 3) utilization of existing equipment, 4) simple test procedure. The stress intensity factors were determined by 3D finite element method considering line and distributed loading conditions. The tests with granite specimens were carried out using MTS 815 rock test system with a loading rate of 0.002 mm/s. The mean value of mode II fracture toughness of granite showed $2.33MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. Mode I toughness of the same granite was $1.12MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, determined by Brazilian disk test and $K_{IIC}/K_{IC}=2.08$. The smooth fracture surface with rock powder formation also supported mode II behavior of SCC method. The SCC method can be used for the determination of mode II fracture toughness of rocks based on the current results.

DFN (discrete fracture network) models that take account of spatial variability and correlation between rock fractures have been demanded for analysis of fractured rock mass behavior for wide areas with high reliability, such as that of underground nuclear waste repositories. In this regard, this report describes the spatial distribution characteristics of fracture networks, and the DFN modeling methodologies that aim to represent such characteristics. DFN modeling methods have been proposed to represent the spatial variability of rock fractures by defining fracture domains (Darcel et al., 2013) and the spatial correlation among fractures by genetic modeling techniques that imitate fracture growth processes (Davy et al., 2013, Libby et al., 2019, Lavoine et al., 2020).These methods, however, require further research for their application to field surveys and for modeling in-situ rock fracture networks.

A three-dimensional(3D) equivalent continuum modeling was performed to analyze hydraulic behavior of rock mass considering discontinuities by using DFN model and smeared fracture model. DFN model was generated by FLAC3D and smeared fracture model was applied by using FISH functions, which is built-in functions in FLAC3D, for equivalent continuum model of fractured rock mass. Comparative analysis with 3DEC, which is for discontinuum analysis, was conducted to verify reliability of equivalent continuum analysis by using FLAC3D. Similar results of hydraulic analysis under the same conditions could be achieved. Equivalent continuum analysis of fractured rock mass by using DFN model was implemented to compare with existing analytical methods for inflow into the tunnel.
