  • In this study, joint analysis was conducted on the rock slope by aerial surveying using UAV. Aerial photos were taken using UAV to measure the directionality of the rock slope exposed to the site, and the directionality of the joint was analyzed using the photographed photos. UAV photography was taken under conditions of 90% overlap and an altitude of 50m. The photographing path was measured in the horizontal, vertical, and oblique directions based on the slope, and the joint characteristics were analyzed. Aerial surveying research on the joint directionality analysis of rock slopes is still incomplete, and the method for accurate joint directionality analysis is not presented strategically, so it is difficult to apply it in design. Through the results of this study, we would like to propose an flight photographing technique for the investigation of rock joints. As a result of the study, in the case of the joint investigation of the rock slope using UAV, it was necessary to change conditions such as altitude, aerial photography route, and overlap according to the size of the joint according to the site conditions.

  • Steep rock slope with water-filled tension crack will happen to overturn around the toe of the slope under seismic loading. This failure type is completely different from the common toppling failure occurring in anti-dipping layered rock mass slopes with steeply dipping discontinuities. This paper presents an analytical approach to determine the seismic factor of safety against overturning for an intact rock mass slope with water-filled tension crack considering horizontal and vertical seismic coefficients. This solution is a generalized explicit expression and is derived using the moment equilibrium approach. A numerical program based on discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) is adopted to validate the analytical results. The parametric study is carried out to adequately investigate the effect of horizontal and vertical seismic coefficients on the overall stability against overturning for a saturated rock slope under two water pressure modes. The analytical results show that vertically upward seismic inertia force or/and second water pressure distribution mode will remarkably decrease the slope stability against overturning. Finally, several representative design charts of slopes also are presented for the practical application.

  • A behavior of ridge-cut rock slope had been monitored by installing inclinometers and regional slope movement toward rear side of cut face was detected. To delineate the governing factors of slope behavior, especially backward slip of ridge-cut slope, petrographic characteristics of rock cores obtained from four drilled boreholes had been examined. BIPS images inside boreholes had been acquired and structural characteristics of slope rock had been studied. Mechanical properties of discontinuity planes distributed in the drilled core had been measured and the shear strength of coal seam imbedded-discontinuity planes also had been obtained by performing the direct shear test. Monitoring results of slope behavior had been analyzed by comprehensibly considering both the mechanical and structural characteristics of slope rock and coal seam-imbedded discontinuity planes, and the potential governance of coal seam and clay minerals embedded in the joint plane on the regional slope behavior has been also identified.

  • In this study, we collected data through the investigation of rock slopes of highway. By analyzing the collected data, the main factors of rock slope failure were studied. We studied on the failure types and scales according to rock types and geological structures in many rock slopes of highway. As a result, it was shown that many failed slopes were distributed in the areas of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of south-eastern part in the Korean Peninsula and the Gneiss Complex in both Kyonggi-Do and Kangwon-Do. According to rock types, the following slope failure types were shown : that igneous rocks had the types of rock fall, plane failure, soil erosion and circular failure but had low failure frequency, and sedimentary rocks had predominantly the type of plane failure. Metamorphic rock showed the types of circular failure, wedge failure and plane failure due to poor rock qualities . According to geological structures, the following slope failure types were shown slope failure in igneous rocks was caused by joints, and in sedimentary rocks by bedding plane, and in metamorphic rocks by faults and poor rock qualities.

  • Blasting is a technique for rock excavation: For instance, a rock cutting in a mountain side to prepare a base for a road. The blasting damage affect the rock slope stability. Therefore control blasting must be used. In this study, cutting cases of Sixty-nine rock blasts were investigated. Blasting damage patterns in rock slope and reinforcement methods are studied.

  • There are some reports which are about measuring the discontinuity from 3D model of rock surface. To generate 3D model is mainly based on remote sensing technique like laser scanning and digital stereo photogrammetry. It is obtained the DEM of the rock slope using above techniques in this study, and examined a suitability and improvement of the photogrammetry for the rock slope by overlap the DEM. It seems that accuracy of DEM generated by photogrammetry technique is influenced by the geometry of rock and type of joint.

  • A gravity wall combined with an anchoring lattice frame (a combined retaining structure) is adopted at a typical engineering site at Dali-Ruili Railway Line China. Where, the combined retaining structure supports a soil deposit covering on different inclined rock slopes. With an aim to investigate and compare the effects of inclined rock slopes on the response of combined retaining structure under seismic excitation, three groups of shaking table tests are conducted. The rock slopes are shaped as planar surfaces inclined at angles of 20°, 30°, and 40° with the horizontal, respectively. The shaking table tests are supplemented by dynamic numerical simulations. The results regarding the horizontal acceleration response, vertical acceleration response, permanent displacement mode, and axial anchor force are comparatively examined. The acceleration response is more susceptible to outer structural profile of combined retaining structure than to inclined angle of rock slope. The permanent displacement decreases when the inclined angle of the rock slope increases within a range of 20°-40°. A critical inclined angle of rock slope exists within a range of 20°-40°, and induces the largest axial anchor force in the combined retaining structure.

  • In general, it has been usually used the method that assess rock slope stability using stereographic projection method, limit equilibrium analysis, numerical analysis and slope stability evaluation table. Several methods for assessing the stability of rock slopes has been proposed on the basis of site investigation data. These method adopted different evaluation items and weighting factors by researchers, organization and nation. But the researches for each evaluation items were insufficient. So the effectiveness of rock slope stability evaluation items for geometrical configuration (slope height, slope direction and angle, dip and dip direction of major discontinuity, absolute value for the direction difference for slope and major discontinuities) and topographical characteristic (possibility of topographical water concentration, upper natural slope angle, slope configuration) using 315 failure and stable highway rock slope analysis data, AV (abnormal value) analysis and NMAV (normalized maximum abnormal value) analysis were evaluated.

  • It is very difficult to determine the failure block scale in great rock slopes. Especially, postulating entire slope domain as a failure block without attention to discontinuity trace lenth makes very confuse and difficult to design rock slopes. In this paper, we estimate realistic failure block scale using joint system simulation method and introduce the application procedures on rock slope analysis. Besides, presenting how joint characteristics measurement and statistical analysis results are applicated to slope stability analysis design flow.

  • This study was conducted to suggest develop revegetation methods and to classification of cutting-rock slopes revegetation type. The data was collected from pre-experienced data, reports and journal. Also research result was reflected from field research for the conditions of construction, vegetation types and field conditions. As the result of analyze, the factors affecting the plant coverage rates of cutting-rock slopes were period of construction, revegetation methods, slope gradient and slope length. Classification of cutting-rock slopes revegetation type was fourth from material of revegetation measures and spray type. It is recommended to adjust the proposed factor as environment, field condition and characteristic related with revegetation measures on slopes for the presentation of revegetation standard.
