The minimum negative exponential disparity estimator(MNEDE), introduced by Lindsay(1994), is an excellenet competitor to the minimum Hellinger distance estimator(Beran 1977) as a robust and yet efficient alternative to the maximum likelihood estimator in parametric models. In this paper we define the negative exponential deviance test(NEDT) as an analog of the likelihood ratio test(LRT), and show that the NEDT is asymptotically equivalent to he LRT at the model and under a sequence of contiguous alternatives. We establish that the asymptotic strong breakdown point for a class of minimum disparity estimators, containing the MNEDE, is at least 1/2 in continuous models. This result leads us to anticipate robustness of the NEDT under data contamination, and we demonstrate it empirically. In fact, in the simulation settings considered here the empirical level of the NEDT show more stability than the Hellinger deviance test(Simpson 1989). The NEDT is illustrated through an example data set. We also define a goodness-of-fit statistic to assess adequacy of a specified parametric model, and establish its asymptotic normality under the null hypothesis.

The rebustness of one sample Chi-square test for multivariate normal mean vector is investigated when the multivariate normal population is mixed with another multivariate normal population with differing in the mean vector. Explicit expressions for the level of significance and power of the test are derived. Some numerical results indicate that the Chi-square test procedure is quite robust against slight mixtures of multivariate normal populations differing in location parameters.

Digital watermarking is tried to get an optimum tradeoffs between its performance characteristics, robustness, transparency and capacity. This paper is, therefore, suggesting a watermarking technique that builds multiple barcodes in various frequency bands to implement embedded watermarks that is imperceptible and robust against various attacks. Even though a watermark technique with duplicated barcode watermarks embedded in various frequency bands can satisfy robustness as there is high possibility that watermarks embedded in an image remains after various attacks, the duplicated barcode data can weaken imperceptibility. Thus, to satisfy the conflicting characteristic requirements of watermarks, robustness and imperceptibility, different barcode data is embedded in each frequency band. The test shows that ownership authentication with the technique suggested in this thesis does not require specialized hardware, and extracted watermarks can be easily identified through a mobile barcode scanner app, which allows low complexity, low cost and swift identification.
In order to prevent illegal video copies, many video fingerprints have been developed. Video fingerprints should be robust from various video transformations and have high discriminative powers. In general, video fingerprints are generated from three feature spaces such as luminance, gradient, and DCT coefficients. However, there is a few study for the robustness and discrimination according to feature spaces. Thus, we analyzed the property of each feature space by video copy detion task with the robustness and the discrimination of video fingerprints. We generated three video fingerprints from these feature spaces using a same algorithm. In our test, a video fingerprint. based on DCT coefficient outperformed others because the discrimination of it was higher.
The current study reports the results of an experimental program conducted on a structure fitted with a liquid damper (TLD) and subjected to harmonic excitation. Screens were placed inside the TLD to achieve the required inherent damping. In the first part of the study, reduced scale models of the building-TLD systems were tested under two levels of excitation. The efficiency of the damper was assessed by evaluating the effective damping provided to the structure and comparing it to the optimum effective damping value, provided by a linear tuned mass damper (TMD). An extensive parametric study was then conducted for one of the three models by varying both the excitation amplitude and the tuning ratio, defined as the ratio of the TLD sloshing frequency to the natural frequency of the structure. The effectiveness and robustness of a TLD with screens were assessed. Results indicate that the TLD can be tuned to achieve a robust performance and that its efficiency is not significantly affected by the level of excitation. Finally, the equivalent amplitude dependent TMD model, developed in the companion paper is validated using the system test results.
The present paper describes an investigation into the application of the genetic algorithm (GA) in the optimum design of composite laminated structure. Stochastic processes generate an initial population of designs and then apply principles of natural selection/survival of the fittest to improve the designs. The five test functions are used to verify the robustness and reliability of the GA, and as a numerical example, minimum weight of a cantilever composite laminated beam with a mix of continuous, integer and discrete design variables is obtained by using the GA with exterior penalty function method. The design problem has constraints on strength, displacements, and natural frequencies, and is formulated to a multidimensional nonlinear form. From the results, it is found that the GA search technique is very effective to find the good optimum solution as well as has higher robustness.

Excessive motions in buildings cause occupants to become uncomfortable and nervous. This is particularly detrimental to the tenants and ultimately the owner of the building, with respect to financial considerations. Serviceability issues, such as excessive accelerations and inter-story drifts, are more prevalent today due to advancements in the structural systems, strength of materials, and design practices. These factors allow buildings to be taller, lighter, and more flexible, thereby exacerbating the impact of dynamic responses. There is a growing need for innovative and effective techniques to reduce the serviceability responses of these tall buildings. The current study considers a case study of a real building to show the effectiveness and robustness of the TLD in reducing the coupled lateral-torsional motion of this high-rise building under wind loading. Three unique multi-modal TLD systems are designed specifically to mitigate the torsional response of the building. A procedure is developed to analyze a structure-TLD system using High Frequency Force Balance (HFFB) test data from the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory (BLWTL) at the University of Western Ontario. The effectiveness of the unique TLD systems is investigated. In addition, a parametric study is conducted to determine the robustness of the systems in reducing the serviceability responses. Three practical parameters are varied to investigate the robustness of the TLD system: the height of water inside the tanks, the amplitude modification factor, and the structural modal frequencies.
The high capacity audio watermarking algorithms are facing a main challenge in satisfying the robustness against attacks especially on de-synchronization attacks. In this paper, a robust and a high capacity algorithm is proposed using segment selection, Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT) and the Quantization Index Modulation (QIM) techniques along with new synchronization mechanism. The proposed algorithm provides enhanced trade-off between robustness, imperceptibility, and capacity. The achieved watermarking improves the reliability of the available watermarking methods and shows high robustness towards signal processing (manipulating) attacks especially the de-synchronization attacks such as cropping, jittering, and zero inserting attacks. For imperceptibility evaluation, high signal to noise ratio values of above 22 dB has been achieved. Also subjective test with volunteer listeners shows that the proposed method has high imperceptibility with Subjective Difference Grade (SDG) of 4.76. Meanwhile, high rational capacity up to 176.4 bps is also achieved.

Many Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) methods have been proposed for structural damage diagnosis and prognosis. However, SHM for pinched hysteretic structures can be problematic due to the high level of nonlinearity. The model-free hysteresis loop analysis (HLA) has displayed notable robustness and accuracy in identifying damage for full-scaled and scaled test buildings. In this paper, the performance of HLA is compared with seven other SHM methods in identifying lateral elastic stiffness for a six-story numerical building with highly nonlinear pinching behavior. Two successive earthquakes are employed to compare the accuracy and consistency of methods within and between events. Robustness is assessed across sampling rates 50-1000 Hz in noise-free condition and then assessed with 10% root mean square (RMS) noise added to responses at 250 Hz sampling rate. Results confirm HLA is the most robust method to sampling rate and noise. HLA preserves high accuracy even when the sampling rate drops to 50 Hz, where the performance of other methods deteriorates considerably. In noisy conditions, the maximum absolute estimation error is less than 4% for HLA. The overall results show HLA has high robustness and accuracy for an extremely nonlinear, but realistic case compared to a range of leading and recent model-based and model-free methods.

The Quality of embedded system depends on the embedded software. As the complexity and the size of embedded software have been increasing, it is more likely that the software may include faults, and the reliability and stability issues are getting more important. In this paper, we propose a remote test tool for software based on VxWorks by using fault injection method. The test tool consists of test server and test client for testing on the cross development environment. The test server operates in the host system and user can not only test but also monitor the software by using it. The test client operates in the target system and it controls kernel objects and sends the input data into the software when receiving the control and data from the test server. We developed the prototype software and demonstrated the ability of testing software robustness by injecting faults.
