  • Digital images acquired by digital devices are used in many fields. Applying statistical methods to the processing of images will increase speed and efficiency. Methods to remove noise and image quality have been researched as a basic operation of image processing. This paper proposes a novel reduction method that considers the direction and magnitude of the edge to remove image noise effectively using statistical methods. The proposed method estimates the brightness of pixels relative to pixels in the same direction based on a robust regression model. An estimate of pixel brightness is obtained by weighting the magnitude of the edge that improves the performance of the average filter. As a result of the simulation study, the proposed method retains pixels that are well-characterized and confirms that noise reduction performance is improved over conventional methods.

  • In a face detection system based on template matching, histogram equalization or log transform is applied to an input image for the intensity normalization and the image improvement. It is known that they are noneffective in improving an image with intensity distortion by illumination variation. In this paper, we propose an efficient image improvement method using a simple regression analysis combined with a bilateral symmetry average for images with intensity distortion by illumination variation. Experimental results show that our method delivers the detection performance better than previous methods and also remarkably reduces the number of face candidates.

  • The location awareness is an important part of many ubiquitous computing systems, but a perfect location system does not exist yet in spite of many researches. Among various location tracking systems, we choose the RFID system due to its wide applications. However, the sensed RSSI signal is too sensitive to the direction of a RFID reader antenna, the orientation of a RFID tag, the human interference, and the propagation media situation. So, the existing location tracking method in spite of using the particle filter is not working well. To overcome this shortcoming, we suggest a robust location tracking method with a double layered structure, where the first layer coarsely estimates a tag's location in the block level using a regression technique or the SVM classifier and the second layer precisely computes the tag's location, velocity and direction using the particle filter technique. Its layered structure improves the location tracking performance by restricting the moving degree of hidden variables. Many extensive experiments show that the proposed location tracking method is so precise and robust to be a good choice for implementing the location estimation of a person or an object in the ubiquitous computing. We also validate the usefulness of the proposed location tracking method by implementing it for a real-time people monitoring system in a noisy and complicate workplace.

  • This paper introduces an objects recognition algorithm based on SURF(Speeded Up Robust Features) and GP(Genetic Programming) based gaits generation. Combining both methods, a recognition based intelligent walking for quadruped robots is proposed. The gait of quadruped robots is generated by means of symbolic regression for each joint trajectories using GP. A position and size of target object are recognized by SURF which enables high speed feature extraction, and then the distance to the object is calculated. Experiments for objects recognition and autonomous walking for quadruped robots are executed for ODE based Webots simulation and real robot.

  • Coefficient of determination $R^2$ is most frequently used descriptive measure in practical use of linear regression analysis. But there have been controversies on defining this measure in the cases of linear regression without the intercept, weighted linear regression and robust linear regression. Several authors such as Kvalseth(1985) and Willet and Singer(1988) proposed many variations of $R^2$ to meet the situations. However, theire measures are not satisfactory due to the lack of a universal principle. In this study, we propose a unfied approach to defining the coefficient of determination $R^2$ using the concept of likelihood distance. This new measure is in good accordance with typical $R^2$ in linear regression and, moreover, can be applied to nonlinear regression models and generalized linear models such as logit and log-linear models.

  • The aim of this study is to develop the methodology which enables to identify the mechanical properties of element such as stress intensity factor by using the AE parameters. Considering the multivariate and nonlinear properties of AE parameters such as ringdown count, rise time, energy, event duration and peak amplitude from fatigue cracks of machine element the principal component regression(PCR) and artificial neural network(ANN) models for the estimation of stress intensity factor were developed and validated. The AE parameters were found to be very significant to estimate the stress intensity factor. Since the statistical values including correlation coefficients, standard mr of calibration, standard error of prediction and bias were stable, the PCR and ANN models for stress intensity factor were very robust. The performance of ANN model for unknown data of stress intensity factor was better than that of PCR model.

  • This study attempts to test the effects of neighborhoods on children and adolescents' alcohol, cigarette and marijuana use. Theoretically, this study was guided by Akers' (1998) SSSL model as potential explanations for understanding the linkage and provided partial test of the model. More specifically, it aims to test the mediation effects of one of core propositions of the SSSL model; whether differential association with deviant peers as well as with conforming peers mediates social disorganization of neighborhoods on adolescent substance and drug use in a different direction. Using multilevel regression techniques with robust standard error, this study utilized data from 1,791 children and adolescents who were nested in 80 neighborhoods in Chicago. The findings of the study provide mixed supports for the SSSL model. That is, it found that there are not only mediation effects but also moderation effects of differential association on children and adolescents' substance and drug use.

  • Classification is to generate a rule of classifying objects into several categories based on the learning sample. Good classification model should classify new objects with low misclassification error. Many types of classification methods have been developed including logistic regression, discriminant analysis and tree. This paper presents a new classification method using penalized partial least squares. Penalized partial least squares can make the model more robust and remedy multicollinearity problem. This paper compares the proposed method with logistic regression and PCA based discriminant analysis by some real and artificial data. It is concluded that the new method has better power as compared with other methods.

  • It is generally needed to test durability and lifetime when we develop parts in new technology. In this paper, the accelerated degradation analysis methods are developed to test them. This study is presented robust model estimation method that is less affected by outlier in regresstion model estimation. In addition, the lifetime can be predicted by Degradation-stress relationship in stress level.

  • We develop an inspection method for bearing faults with a rapid change in the rotation speed and present indexes for the pass/fail inspection. At the end of line, impulse noises generated by the operation of machines and conveyors may distort the inspection results. In this paper, we present robust inspection indexes for bearing faults under impulse noises, by taking into account fault signals having pulse train. Using logistic regression, we optimize the pass/fail criterion for each index and evaluate the performance of the inspection indexes based on the total error rate.
