Recently, necessity and usage of the teleoperation have been increased in various fields from industrial automation to home application. Also, the internet is considered as a strong candidate far the transmission media of signals. However, it has an irregular transmission time delay and causes critical problems such as instability and poor performance. This paper presents a practical internet teleoperation system with a streaming buffer system which makes a variable time delay fixed. Validity of the proposed system is demonstrated by implementing the embedded system on a HILS(hardware in the loop system) which models a two-wheel mobile robot.

In direct vehicle teleoperation, a human operator drives a vehicle at a distance through a pair of master and slave device. However, if there is time delay, it is difficult to remotely drive the vehicle due to slow response. In order to address this problem, we introduced a novel methodology of shared vehicle teleoperation using a virtual driving interface. The methodology was developed with four components: 1) virtual driving environment, 2) interface for virtual driving environment, 3) path generator based on virtual driving trajectory, 4) path following controller. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed approach in simple and cluttered driving environment as well. In the experiments, we compared two sampling methods, fixed sampling time and user defined instant, and finally merged method showed best remote driving performance in term of completion time and number of collision.
This paper presents a physically-based haptic rendering algorithm for a deformable object based on visual information about the intervention between a tool and a real object in a remote place. The physically-based model of a deformable object is created from the mechanical properties of the object and the captured image obtained with a CCD camera. When a slave system exerts manipulation tasks on a deformable object, the reaction force for haptic rendering is computed using boundary element method. Snakes algorithm is used to obtain the geometry information of a deformable object. The proposed haptic rendering algorithm can provide haptic feedback to a user without using a force transducer in a teleoperation system.
This paper proposes a remote control system that combines computer network and an autonomous mobile robot. We control remotely an autonomous mobile robot with vision via the internet to guide it under unknown environments in the real time. The main feature of this system is that local operators need a World Wide Web browser and a computer connected to the internet communication network and so they can command the robot in a remote location through our Home Page. The hardware architecture of this system consists of an autonomous mobile robot, workstation, and local computers. The software architecture of this system includes the server part for communication between user and robot and the client part for the user interface and a robot control system. The server and client parts are developed using Java language which is suitable to internet application and supports multi-platform. Furthermore, this system offers an image compression method using motion JPEG concept which reduces large time delay that occurs in network during image transmission.

This article presents the kinematic analysis and implementation of an interface and control of two robots-an exoskeleton master robot and a human-like slave robot with two arms. Two robots are designed and built to be used for motion-following tasks. The operator wears the exoskeleton master robot to generate motions, and the slave robot is required to follow after the motion of the master robot. To synchronize the motions of two robots, kinematic analysis is performed to correct the kinematic mismatch between two robots. Hardware implementation of interface and control is done to test motion-following tasks. Experiments are performed to confirm the feasibility of the motion-following tasks by two robots.

In this paper, an exoskeleton-type motion capturing system is designed and implemented. The device is designed to have 12 degree-of-freedom entirely to represent human arm motions. Forward and inverse kinematics of the device are analyzed to make sure of its singular positions. With the designed model parameters, simulation studies are conducted to verify that the designed motion capturing system is effective to represent human motions within the workspace. As a counterpart of the exoskeleton system, a mobile robot is built to follow human motion restrictively. Experimental studies of teleoperation from the exoskeleton device to control the mobile robot are carried out to show feasible application of wireless man-machine interface.
In this paper, the relationship between a slave robot and the uncertain remote environment is modeled as the impedance to generate the virtual force to feed back to the operator. For the control of a teleoperated mobile robot equipped with camera, the teleoperated mobile robot take pictures of remote environment and sends the visual information back to the operator over the Internet. Because of the limitation of communication bandwidth and narrow view-angles of camera, it is not possible to watch the environment clearly, especially shadow and curved areas. To overcome this problem, the virtual force is generated according to both the distance between the obstacle and robot and the approachin...

Abstract: In teleoperation field robotic system such as hydraulically actuated robotic excavator, the maneuverability and convenience is the most important part in the operation of robotic excavator. Particularly the force information is important in dealing with digging and leveling operation in the teleoperated excavator. Excavators are also subject to a wide variation of soil-tool interaction forces. This paper presents a new force reflecting joystick in a velocity-force type bilateral teleoperation system. The master system is electrical joystick and the slave system IS hydraulically actuated cylinder with linear position sensor. Particularly Pneumatic motor is used newly in the master joystick for force reflection and the information of the pressure of salve cylinder is measured and utilized as the force feedback signal. Also force-reflection gain greatly affects the excavation performance of a hydraulically actuated robotic system and it is very difficult to determine it appropriately since slave excavator contacts with various environments such as from soft soil to rock. To overcome this, this paper proposes a force-reflection gain selecting algorithm based on artificial neural network and fuzzy logic.

The Internet has been widely applied to the remote control system. The network-based control system, however, has a random time delay and an inherent weak point of the network, when the data ate transmitted. The network delay may result in performance degradation or even system instability in teleoperation. In this paper a prediction model of network delay using TSK (Takagi-Sugeno-Kang) fuzzy model is presented. An adaptive scheme is developed to update the prediction model according to the current network status. The prediction model is applied to the control of an Internet-based mobile robot to show its usefulness. In the computer simulation the TSK Prediction model of network delay is proven superior to the conventional algorithms.

In this paper, a new haptic device is proposed for the teleoperation, which can recognize the invisible environment of a mobile robot. With this new device, it is possible for the user to identify the location of an obstacle and to avoid it. The haptic device has been attached on the top of a joystick so that the user can remotely control the mobile robot to avoid the obstacles which are recognized by the ultrasonic sensors. Also, the invisible environment is recognized more accurately overlapping the data from the ultrasonic sensors. There are five vibration motors in the haptic device to indicate the direction of the obstacle. So the direction of the obstacle can be recognized by the vibration at the finger on each vibration motor. For various situations and surrounding environments, experiments are performed using fuzzy controller and overlapping ultrasonic sensors. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed haptic joystick.
