This paper, proposes concept of personal robot middleware core also called streaming layer. Based on openness and portability, the streaming layer is proposed in order to meet requirements of different kinds of applications. The streaming layer architecture provides effective management of data flows and allows integration of different systems with ease regardless software of hardware platform. With extensibility support additional features can be build in without affect to performance. Therefore, heterogeneous network support, real-time communications, embedded boards support can be easily achieved. In order to achieve high performance together with portability into different platforms, the most functions has to be implemented in C language, while critical parts, such as scheduling, priority assignment has to be made using native functions of tested platforms.

This paper provides a basis for investigating 'The Origin of Artificial Species,' as a robot can be considered as an artificial creature. To design an artificial creature, its general internal architecture is presented and its artificial chromosomes are proposed as its essential components. Rity as an artificial creature is developed in a virtual world of PC to test the world's first robotic 'chromosomes,' which are a set of computerized DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) codes for creating robots (artificial creatures) that can have their own personality, and can ultimately reproduce their kind, or even evolve as a distinct species. The effectiveness of the artificial chromosomes is demonstrated by implanting the genetic code into two Ritys living in a virtual world, in order to define their personality.
GoldStar Industrial Systems Co. R & D center successfully developed the inverter for welding under the support of GoldStar Electric Machinery Co. Now, we are currently working on the mechanical part of articulated robot and a high-performance general purpose motion controller. By combining the above three items, we will be able to constitute the complete welding robot system on our own. In this article. the welding robot system currently under developing is introduced. The main focus will be placed on the development of general purpose motion controller with welding control module. Therefore, the architecture of welding robot controller where the general purpose motion controller is combined with the welding controller module will be explained. Here, the software system will be explained with regard to the hardware system.

This paper presents the development of fire-fighting and rescue robot for Outdoor Environment. In the procedure of this development, we follow Target Oriented Design (TOD) which is recognized as the systematic methodology to design a system by specifying the target clearly. For some real fire fighting tasks (e.g. tasks in shopping street and a market), narrow road make it difficult for existing fire engine to access the firing place. On the other hand, for dangerous tasks (e.g. gasoline station and a storehouse) the explosive materials make it impossible for fire-fighters to access the firing place. Moreover, the smoke and the high-temperature caused by fire make fire fighting difficult. In this situation, the solution is to develop the fire-fighting and rescue robot. TOD is performed firstly by analyzing the environment properties of fro place and the demanded tasks and the fire-fighting and rescue robot is manufactured. For safety, the fire fighting robot should be controlled by remote operation to keep the operator away from the fire, and the control system is divided into three parts: the robot controllers, controller for remote operating device and wireless communication system. We have selected and developed appropriate hardware and software for each part of control system with considering TOD. As a result, the fire-fighting robot functions correctly and the performance and usefulness of our control architecture is validated by successfully performing some fire-fighting tasks.
This paper presents an architecture and control logic of a Flexible Manufacturing Cell (FMC) which is one of the important elements under Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment. To implement FMC, it is very important to develop a software which can control and monitor the overall system in an integrated environment. Our primary concern in this research is not to develop individual systems, but to integrate them in the hierarchical control level. Progress on the research of integrating CAD/CAM, Process Planning, Off-line Robot Programming and Simulation module into FMC control system is reported. FMC hardware system used here has an Automated Storage & Retrieval System (AS/RS), a conveyor system, a transfer robot, a CNC milling machine, a bar-code system, and an IBM PC/AT as Cell Control System (CCS). In order to demonstrate the operational result, the name plates, text-carved aluminium plates, are manufactured by this system.
Research on intelligent robot is in active progress as the next generation IT education area. Since intelligent robots are closely related to the real human world, they should provide human behaviors or judging ability as their functions. For this reason, research is recently done not only on diverse hardware of robot education but also on service component architecture which includes various functions. In this paper we propose a study on learning to creative solve problems using RDS(Robotics Developer Studio). RDS is a software tool to control or program intelligence robot as a software module. Using service component framework which considers standardization of the integrated development of intelligent robot, we expect to provide 3-dimensional visual simulation environment, and save time and costs in education the environment for the intelligence robot experiment.
Network-based intelligent robot is connected with network system, provides interactions with humans, and carries out its own roles on ubiquitous computing environments. URC (Ubiquitous Robot Companion) robot has been proposed to develop network-based robot by applying distributed computing techniques. On URC robot, it is possible to save the computing power of robot client by environments, has been proposed to develop robot software using service-oriented architecture on server-client computing environments. The SOMAR client robot consists of two layers - device service layer and robot service layer. The device service controls physical devices, and the robot service abstracts robot's services, which are newly defined and generated by combining many device services. RSEL (Robot Service Executing Language) is defined in this paper to represent relations and connections between device services and robot services. A RESL document, including robot services by combining several device services, is translated to a programming language for robot client system using RSEL translator, then the translated source program is compiled and uploaded to robot client system with RPC (Remote Procedure Call) command. A SOMAR client system is easy to be applied to embedded systems of host/target architecture. Moreover it is possible to produce a light-weight URC client robot by reducing workload of RSEL processing engine.

This paper implements dual-kernel system using standard Linux and real-time embedded Linux for the real-time control of intelligent robot systems. Such system provides more useful services including standard Linux thread that is easy to implement complicated tasks and real-time tasks for the deterministic response to velocity control. Here, an open source real-time embedded Linux, XENOMAI, is ported on embedded target board. And for interfacing with motor controller we adopted a real-time serial device driver. The real-time task was implemented with a priority to keep the cyclic control command for trajectory control. In order to validate deterministic response of the proposed system, the performance measurement of the delay in performing trajectory control with feedback loop is evaluated with non real-time standard Linux. The proposed software architecture is anticipated to take advantage of features in both standard Linux and real-time operating systems for the intelligent robot systems.
In this paper, we propose a new remote control and monitoring technique using web-service technology for URC robot. URC robot needs the architecture which can be applied all over the variety hardware and software platform for supporting the several interface with external world in the ubiquitous environment. In this paper, web-service technology is preferentially deliberated how to adopt into the embedded environment and the remote control and monitoring technology based on web-service technology for URC robot is designed and implemented as to support the interaction with agent programs. It has been carried out through simulating and implementing this technology into the target robot called NETTORO and proved its practical worth.
An experimental research is a useful approach for realizing autonomous mobile robots to work in real environment. We are developing an autonomous mobile robot platform named "Yamabico" as a tool for experimental real world robotics research. The architecture of Yamabico is based on the concept of centralized decision making and functionally modularization. Yamabico robot has two level structure with behavior and function levels, and its hardware and software are functionally distributed for providing incremental development and good maintenancibility. We are using many Yamabico robots in our laboratory to realize the robust navigation technology for autonomous robots. The methodology for experimental and task-oriented approach of mobile robotics will be presented. And some experimental results of real world navigation in indoor and outdoor environment will be shown. be shown.
