In this paper, a simple version of the hybrid navigation system using Kalman filter is proposed. The implemented hybrid navigation system is composed of a GPS to measure the position and the velocity, and a IMU(inertial measurement unit) to measure the acceleration and the posture of a mobile robot. A discrete Kalman filter is applied to provide the position of the robot by fusing both of the sensor data. When GPS signal is available, the navigation system estimates the position of the robot from the Kalman filter using position and velocity from GPS, and acceleration from IMU. During the interval until next GPS signal arrives, the system calculates the position of the robot using acceleration from IMU and velocity obtained at the previous step. Performance of the navigation system is verified by comparing the real path and the estimated path of the mobile robot. From experiments, we conclude that the navigation system is acceptable for the mobile robot.
Navigation system is applied in variety of fields including the simple location positioning, autopilot navigation of unmanned robot tractor, autonomous guidance systems for agricultural vehicles, construction of large field works that require high precision and map making process. Particularly utilization of GPS (Global Positioning System) is very common in the present navigation system. This study introduces a navigation system for autonomous field robot that travels to the pre-input path using GPS information. Performance of the GPS- based navigation is highly depended on its receiving rate because GPS receivers do not acquire any navigation information in the period between the refresh intervals. So this study presents an algorithm that improves an accuracy of the navigation by estimation the positional information during the blind period of a low rate GPS receiver. In fact the algorithm calculated the robot's heading in a 50 Hz rate, so the blind period of an 1 Hz GPS receiver is extensively covered. Consequently implementation of the algorithm to the GPS based navigation showed an improvement in guidance accuracy. The conventional field robot directly carried an expensive control computer and sensors onboard, therefore the miniaturization and weight reduction of the robot was limited. In this paper, the field robot carried only communication equipments such as GPS module, normal RC receiver, and bluetooth modem. This enabled the field robot to be built in an economic cost and miniature size.
In this paper, we propose a multisensor-based navigation algorithm for a mobile robot, which is intelligently searching the goal location in unknown dynamic environments using multi-ultrasonic sensor. Instead of using “sensor fusion” method which generates the trajectory of a robot based upon the environment model and sensory data, “command fusion” method by fuzzy inference is used to govern the robot motions. The major factors for robot navigation are represented as a cost function. Using the data of the robot states and the environment, the weight value of each factor using fuzzy inference is determined for an optimal trajectory in dynamic environments. For the evaluation of the proposed algorithm, we performed simulations in PC as well as experiments with IRL-2002. The results show that the proposed algorithm is apt to identify obstacles in unknown environments to guide the robot to the goal location safely.
This work deals with navigation of an omni-directional mobile robot with active caster wheels. Initially, the posture of the omni-directional mobile robot is calculated by using the odometry information. Next, the position accuracy of the mobile robot is measured through comparison of the odometry information and the external sensor measurement. Finally, for successful navigation of the mobile robot, a motion planning algorithm that employs kinematic redundancy resolution method is proposed. Through experiments for multiple obstacles and multiple moving obstacles, the feasibility of the proposed navigation algorithm was verified.
A dead reckoning navigation system is developed for autonomous mobile robot localization. The navigation system was implemented by novel sensor fusion using a Kalman filter. A differential encoder and the gyroscope error models are developed for the filter. An indirect Kalman filter scheme is adopted to reduce the computational burden and to enhance the navigation system reliability. The filter mutually compensates the encoder errors and the gyroscope errors. The experimental results show that the proposed mobile . robot navigation algorithm provides the reliable position and heading angle of the mobile robot without any help of the external positioning systems.
Autonomous guided robot navigation which consists of following unknown paths and avoiding unknown obstacles has been a fundamental technique for unmanned robots in outdoor environments. The unknown path following requires techniques such as path recognition, path planning, and robot pose estimation. In this paper, we propose a novel sensor fusion system for autonomous guided robot navigation in outdoor environments. The proposed system consists of three monocular cameras and an array of nine infrared range sensors. The two cameras equipped on the robot's right and left sides are used to recognize unknown paths and estimate relative robot pose on these paths through bayesian sensor fusion method, and the other camera equipped at the front of the robot is used to recognize abrupt curves and unknown obstacles. The infrared range sensor array is used to improve the robustness of obstacle avoidance. The forward camera and the infrared range sensor array are fused through rule-based method for obstacle avoidance. Experiments in outdoor environments show the mobile robot with the proposed sensor fusion system performed successfully real-time autonomous guided navigation.
In this paper, robot navigation experiments with a new navigation algorithm are carried out in real environments. The authors already proposed a reactive navigation algorithm for mobile robots using optimal via-point selection method. At each sampling time, a number of via-point candidates is constructed with various candidates of heading angles and velocities. The robot detects surrounding obstacles, and the proposed algorithm utilizes fuzzy multi-attribute decision making in selecting the optimal via-point the robot would proceed at next step. Fuzzy decision making allows the robot to choose the most qualified via-point even when the two navigation goals-obstacle avoidance and target point reaching-conflict each other. The experimental result shows the successful navigation can be achieved with the proposed navigation algorithm for real environments.
In this study, we propose an improved view-based navigation method for obstacle avoidance and evaluate the effectiveness of the method in real environments with real obstacles. The proposed method possesses the ability to estimate the position and rotation of a mobile robot, even if the mobile robot strays from a recording path for the purpose of avoiding obstacles. In order to achieve this, ego-motion estimation was incorporated into the existing view-based navigation system. The ego-motion is calculated from SURF points between a current view and a recorded view using a Kinect sensor. In conventional view-based navigation systems, it is difficult to generate alternate paths to avoid obstacles. The proposed method is anticipated to allow a mobile robot greater flexibility in path planning to avoid humans and objects expected in real environments. Based on experiments performed in an indoor environment using a mobile robot, we evaluated the measurement accuracy of the proposed method, and confirmed its feasibility for robot navigation in museums and shopping mall.
This paper propose a fuzzy inference model for map building and navigation for a mobile robot with an active camera, which is intelligently navigating to the goal location in unknown environments using sensor fusion, based on situational command using an active camera sensor. Active cameras provide a mobile robot with the capability to estimate and track feature images over a hallway field of view. In this paper, instead of using "physical sensor fusion" method which generates the trajectory of a robot based upon the environment model and sensory data. Command fusion method is used to govern the robot navigation. The navigation strategy is based on the combination of fuzzy rules tuned for both goal-approach and obstacle-avoidance. To identify the environments, a command fusion technique is introduced, where the sensory data of active camera sensor for navigation experiments are fused into the identification process. Navigation performance improves on that achieved using fuzzy inference alone and shows significant advantages over command fusion techniques. Experimental evidences are provided, demonstrating that the proposed method can be reliably used over a wide range of relative positions between the active camera and the feature images.
The fundamental research for the mobile robot navigation using the numerical optimization method is presented. We propose an image-based visual servo navigation algorithm for a wheeled mobile robot utilizing a ceiling mounted camera. For the image-based visual servoing, we define the composite image Jacobian which represents the relationship between the speed of wheels of a mobile robot and the robot's overall speed in the image plane. The rotational speed of wheels of a mobile robot can be directly related to the overall speed of a mobile robot in the image plane using the composite image Jacobian. We define the mobile robot navigation problem as an unconstrained optimization problem to minimize the cost function with the image error between the goal position and the position of a mobile robot. In order to avoid the obstacle, the modified cost function is proposed which is composed of the image error between the position of a mobile robot and the goal position and the distance between the position of a mobile robot and the position of the obstacle. The performance was evaluated using the simulation.
