In an effort to improve the major tree species in Korea, the seed of Robinia pseudoacacia, Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and Larix leptolepis were treated with X-ray and thermal neutron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and germination rate of the seed and some characteristics of the seedlings from irradiated seed were investigated and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The germination rate of the irradiated seed of Robinia pseudoacacia, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and Pinus rigida was decreased, when the irradiation time of thermal neutron increased from 3 hours to 9 hours. The seed of Larix leptolepis was completely died out in all range of irradiation time. 2. The seed of Pinus densiflora, Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus rigida showed low germination rate, when the dosage of radiation increased in the range of 10,000r-30,000r X-ray. This dosage of radiation was almost lethal to the seed of Pinus thunbergii and Larix leptolepis. 3. The growth rate of radiated Robinia pseudoacacia has been decreased when the dosage of X-ray and thermal neutron increased. However, the trees treated with thermal neutron for 3 hours showed 14.9 percent-increase in seedling height and some thornless individuals appeared in this treatment. 4. Individuals with variegated leaf, rugose leaf and albino were appeared in X-ray and thermal neutron treatment. 5. Abnormal mitosis of somatic cell, cell with two nucleoli, cell with two nuclei and chromosome clump in mitosis of somatic cell were observed in Robinia pseudoacacia irradiated with thermal neutron. 6. Resistanty against pawdery mildew was decreased in Robinia pseudoacacia radiated with X-ray and thermal neutron. 7. Length of stomata did not show any difference however number of stomata per unit area decreased in Robinia pseudoacacia radiated with thermal neutron. The leaves of Robinia pseudoacacia radiated with thermal neutron were thicker than those of non-treated one, but width of palisade tissue was decreased. The most sensitive one among those species to the thermal neutron treatment was Larix leptolepis, followed by Pinus densiflora, Robinia pseudoacacia, Pinus thunbergii and Pinus rigida in the order. In X-ray treatment, the most sensitive one was Larix leptolepis, followed by Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, Pinus rigida and Robinia pseudoacacia in the order. Morphological, cytological variation of the radiated Robinia pseudoacacia seemed to indicate some possibility to be used for tree improvement.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of adjacent stand on the invasion of Robinia pseudoacacia plantations. The results were as follows. 1) Robinia pseudoacacia tended to invade into all directions regardless of the kinds of adjacent stands. But it was estimated that the invasion of Robinia pseudoacacia into adjacent stands could be very difficult, if the layer structure of adjacent stands were well developed. Whereas, it was estimated that Robinia pseudoacacia more rapidly intruded into adjacent stands, if adjacent stands were opened and bared. 2) Robinia pseudoacacia tended to invade into all aspects regardless of the kinds of vegetation units in the adjacent stands. But the dominance class of Robinia pseudoacacia in the adjacent stands showed a little differences among the vegetation units. The dominance class of Robinia pseudoacacia in Quercus aliena community and Quercus serrata community showed low level as + ~2, while the dominance class of Pinus densiflora community, Pinus rigida community, Quercus variabilis community and Quercus acutissima community represented high level as 1~4. Also the dominance class of Isodon inflexus subgroup among three subgroups of Pinus densiflora community showed the lowest level as + ~2.

The waste landfill that has been used as a park through a stabilization project to provide green space to local residents. Vegetation restoration is necessary for the landfill park project, but it is difficult to restore vegetation due to various disturbances in the landfill. This study analyzed the successional dynamics and ecological characteristics of Robinia pseudoacacia communities from the slopes of Noeul Park by applying the 7-stage successional hypothesis. As a result of the study, there was almost no intermediate successional stage. There are only the early successional stage which Robinia pseudoacacia has an absolute dominance of 100% in the crown and middle layers, and the degeneration successional stage which formed by the introduction of Morus alba. This result showed that the succession of Robinia pseudoacacia communities were not able to proceed to the climax forest due to various disturbances in the waste landfill. Therefore, it was analyzed that it is necessary to induce the succession through intermediate steps such as Morus alba, since it is difficult to transition from Robinia pseudoacacia community to the native Quercus spp. community.
Three flavan-3,4-diol derivatives were isolated from the heartwood of Robinia pseudoacacia and characterized by spectroscopic methods including $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR and positive FAB-MS. The structures were identified as 4,4'-dimethoxy-, 4-ethoxy- and 4-ethoxy-4'-methoxy-2,3-trans-3,4-cis-(+)-leucorobinetinidin.
To understand water flow path in the cells of Robinia pseudoacacia and Pyrus ussuriensis and obtain color wood from them, this experiment was performed by penetrating 0.5% acidic fuchsin and 0.5% fast green solution into the living wood of them. A comparison was made of the wood structure and water flow path from Robinia pseudoacacia containing the ring-porous wood with tyloses, and Pyrus ussuriensis including solitary diffuse-porous wood with distinct fiber pits. The dye penetrated into vessel elements in the early wood of two growth rings from bark in Robinia pseudoacacia, but permeated all xylem in fonts ussuriensis. In Robinia pseudoacacia, the vessels of heart wood and intermediate wood were not stained because of tyloses.
The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze a conservation state and a sustainable use of coastal wetland in Sindu-ri Tae-an, using the plant community structure analysis and the awareness result of local residents by published paper. To investigate a forest structure in Sindu-ri area, twenty plots were set up and surveyed. The community, is divided by three groups. The divided groups are Robinia pseudoacacia(I), Pinus thunbergii-Robinia pseudoacacia(II), Robinia pseudoacacia(III). Survey site I is simple canopy layer and deteriorative forest. Survey site II is grassland and swamp, where Pinus thunbergii-Robinia pseudoacacia is dominant trees of vegetation. Robinia pseudoacacia is competition species with Pinus thunbergii in survey site II. Survey site III is barren land(sand-hill) where main species is Robinia pseudoacacia. As a result, survey II district is considered as the most suitable for the conservation of species diversity. It is proposed in this paper that the ecological nature trail would be connected in survey site I and II for environmental education. The local residents of Tae-an, where natural environment is well-conserved, prefer conservation to development of the region. In case of Tae-an, where the condition of the natural environment is well conserved and the development potential exists, the development is in harmony with the environmental education program.
Robinia pseudoacacia has become invasively naturalized in Japan. We investigated the role of sexual reproduction in the development of R. pseudoacacia riparian forests along the Chikumagawa River in Japan, by using five chloroplast (cpSSR) and seven nuclear (nSSR) markers. We identified eight chloroplast haplotypes and 147 nuclear genotypes from 619 R. pseudoacacia trees sampled in three plots (Plots A, B, and C) and along two line transects (Lines D and E). CpSSR analyses showed that multiple maternal lines were distributed along the river, and that some haplotypes from different populations overlapped. In addition, while Plots A and B were separated by a short distance, only these two plots exhibited genetic differentiation in the haplotypes. In the nSSR analysis, all pairwise $F_{ST}$ values among the three plots were significantly different from zero. Kinship analysis based on nSSR markers revealed that kinship connected many individuals to another individual from the same plot. These results indicate that seed dispersal near to mother trees contributes to the fine-scale genetic structure of R. pseudoacacia riparian forests. Our results indicate that sexual reproduction, in addition to asexual reproduction, is a major contributor to the fine-scale formation of R. pseudoacacia forests.
Root nodule biomass, and seedling biomass and growth were examined for 2-year-old Robinia pseudoacacia and Amorpha fruticosa seedlings following fertilization treatments. Organic fertilizer, solid combination fertilizer, and organic fertilizer plus solid combination fertilizer were used for the study. Root nodule biomass (g/plant) ranged from 3.00 to 7.06 for R. pseudoacacia and varied from 1.52 to 2.32 for A. fruticosa, respectively. In all treatments, root nodule biomass of R. pseudoacacia was significantly higher than those of A. fruticosa. Fertilization significantly increased root nodule biomass for only R. pseudoacacia, however, there were no significant differences in root nodule biomass among fertilization treatments. Root nodule biomass was not influenced by soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) concentrations following fertilization treatments. Seedling biomass (components and total) and growth (diameter at root collar and height) were strongly correlated with root nodule biomass for the two N fixing tree species.
The objectives of this study were to analyze environment in the forest and growth characteristics for investigating the characteristics of Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast. As a result of analyzing inhibitory factors of Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast, it is considered that the salt level included in a sea wind is supposed to be the primary factor of the slow growth for Robinia pseudoacacia since brown leaves, wilting and early leaf fall have appeared in the 0m spot from the artificial dune which has the high salt level. However, the soil properties and light environment hardly have a effect on the growth of Robinia pseudoacacia because there is no difference among planting places. Also, the growth ring of the horizontal root in 2year individuals 0.1~0.2m away from the dune have been formed for 1 year only as a consequence of analyzing growth rings of Robinia pseudoacacia growing on the coast. It can be infered that the nourishment of the horizontal root from individuals growing on the coast have been provided for the first 1 year only. It is estimated that, in case of the nearby areas on the coast, it is not enough to provided nourishment to the horizontal root due to obstructing the growth of new individuals by a sea wind, so the growth of the horizontal root would be hampered. Therefore, it is considered that impedient Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast is caused by making no growth of new horizontal roots and newborn individuals.
A plant regeneration system using shoot basal callus of in vitro cultured black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia L.) was established. Shoot basal callus was induced on MS medium supplemented with BA, or NAA, and mere more proliferated on BA containing medium than NAA containing medium at both light and dark conditions. Shoot basal callus was induced during shoot multiplication procedure. Two types of callus, green colored callus and whitish-yellow colored callus, were cultured on mMS medium containing 2.0 mg/l BA and 0.5 mg/l NAA. Green colored callus showed the shoot regeneration ability while whitish-yellow callus failed to regenerate shoot and died. Regenerated shoot were rooted on hormone-free ${\frac{1}{2}}MS$ medium within 2 weeks.
