The power spectral density (PSD) for the road surface roughness on the bridges of minor roads in Wonju city and Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do is presented. To obtain the PSD, the road surface roughness on 18 different bridges with various superstructure type and span is measured by GPS at every 10 to 30cm interval. Assuming the PSD as the stationary normal probability process with zero mean value, the PSD of measured road surface roughness is obtained by applying the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM). A simple formula in evaluating the PSD of RC slab bridge, Rahmen bridge and PSC I-girder bridge which is applicable to the dynamic response analysis of bridges considering the road surface roughness is proposed. Using the calculated PSD curves, the road surface conditions on the 18 bridges are evaluated. The statistical relationship between the PSD and the IRI is presented by applying linear regression and correlation analysis.
The principle of the FDM(fused deposition modeling) process is based on the layer by layer manufacturing technology, like other RP(rapid prototyping) process. In the FDM process, each layer may have different shape. Therefore, the built model may have stairs shape on its surface. This stairs shape is one of the serious problems in the FDM process. Thus in this study, cube models and spherical models were fabricated by FDM process to investigate the influence of injection amount on surface roughness. Models with various road width were also built to investigate the influence of road width on surface roughness. Surface roughness of the models was measured and analyzed. The result obtained in this study are expected to help selecting the part build orientation for optimum surface roughness.
The indirect approach for measuring the bridge frequencies from the dynamic responses of a passing vehicle is a highly potential method. In this study, the effect of road surface roughness on such an approach is studied through finite element simulations. A two-dimensional mathematical model with the vehicle simulated as a moving sprung mass and the bridge as a simply-supported beam is adopted. The dynamic responses of the passing vehicle are solved by the finite element method along with the Newmark ${\beta}$ method. Through the numerical examples studied, it is shown that the presence of surface roughness may have negative consequence on the extraction of bridge frequencies from the test vehicle. However, such a shortcoming can be overcome either by introducing multiple moving vehicles on the bridge, besides the test vehicle, or by raising the moving speed of the accompanying vehicles.
Evaluation of fuel consumption for the various road condition and vehicle type is necessary to perform the economic analysis of road construction which is important for the efficient design and management of road. Economic analysis of road should consider the social cost which can be divided into agency cost including initial construction expense, maintenance cost, and so on, and user cost consisting of vehicle operating cost, congestion cost, etc. Since vehicle operating cost depends on the traffic volume, fuel consumption that is a major part of vehicle operating cost will change by traffic volume as well. Fuel consumption is significantly affected by vehicle speed and road condition, especially the roughness. Thus, fuel consumption should be evaluated in terms of road condition, which is not currently considered. In this study, the estimation model of fuel consumption for the passenger cars in Korea has been developed by considering the road condition. First, the relationship between vehicle speed and fuel consumption that is used to calculate the vehicle operating cost for investment evaluation of transportation facility and the initial feasibility study of road construction was investigated. Second, with the consideration of road roughness, fuel consumption of the passenger car was measured. From the measurement, it was found that fuel consumption increased by $80m{\ell}$ per 100km driving as the roughness increased by 1m/km. Therefore, it is recommended that for the economic analysis of road design and management, the fuel consumption should be a function of road roughness.
Measuring the bridge frequencies indirectly from an instrumented test vehicle is a potentially powerful technique for its mobility and economy, compared with the conventional direct technique that requires vibration sensors to be installed on the bridge. However, road surface roughness may pollute the vehicle spectrum and render the bridge frequencies unidentifiable. The objective of this paper is to study such an effect. First, a numerical simulation is conducted using the vehicle-bridge interaction element to demonstrate how the surface roughness affects the vehicle response. Then, an approximate theory in closed form is presented, for physically interpreting the role and range of influence of surface roughness on the identification of bridge frequencies. The latter is then expanded to include the action of an accompanying vehicle. Finally, measures are proposed for reducing the roughness effect, while enhancing the identifiability of bridge frequencies from the passing vehicle response.
A new method is developed to estimate road profile in order to estimate IRI based on the ASTM standard. This method utilizes an accelerometer and a Dynamic Tire Pressure Sensor (DTPS) to estimate road roughness. The accelerometer measures the vertical axle acceleration. The DTPS, which is mounted on the tire's valve stem, measures dynamic pressure inside the tire while driving. Calibrated transfer functions are used to estimate road profile using the signals from the two sensors. A field test was conducted on roads with different quality conditions in the city of Brockton, MA. The IRI values estimated with this new method match the actual road conditions measured with Pavement Condition Index (PCI) based on the ASTM standard, images taken from an onboard camera and passengers' perceptions. IRI has negative correlation with PCI in general since they have overlapping features. Compared to the current method of IRI measurement, the advantage of this method is that a) the cost is reduced; b) more space is saved; c) more time is saved; and d) mounting the two sensors are universally compatible to most cars and vans. Therefore, this method has the potential to provide continuous and global monitoring the health of roadways.
High VOC(Vehicle Operating Cost) is the main reason for the rehabilitation of paved road and VOC is composed of fuel consumption, lubricant oil consumption, parts consumption, etc. Fuel consumption is one of the largest components of VOC and the roughness of road represents the deterioration level of the road. For these reasons, the fuel consumption is measured for different IRI(International Roughness Index) in this study. The fuel consumption was measured by processing the voltage signal of fuel injector of vehicle and the speed was measured with GPS. The change rate of fuel consumption for different IRI can be calculated with the results of this test. It's concluded that fuel consumption(L/100km) of medium and large passenger car increases 7 times fast of the increase of IRI(m/km) around 3.5m/km in the speed range of 40 ~ 100km/h, and fuel consumption is the best at 60km/h.

In this study, the process of providing information necessary to remove physical barriers such as road slopes that obstruct the activities of the disabled is in progress. Through experiments, we implement a quantified road surface roughness index that enables the implementation of IoT-based systems necessary for the elderly and the disabled to safely move to their destination. As a preliminary study, a road surface measurement device using a gyroscope was devised. To check the roughness and flatness of the road surface, X, Y displacement, and acceleration displacement were measured using a gyroscope. By calculating the measured data, the roughness and flatness of the road surface were quantified from 0 to 100. We implemented an algorithm that divides this index into 4 stages, displays it on a map, and provides it to users. Finally, a system for the disabled and elderly electric wheelchair users to secure basic mobility was established.
The reliable data relating to the condition of road surface is of increasing importance to deliver the road condition to driver and road management authority. This paper describes the development of a new high-speed. automatic, road data collection system, which collects the longitudinal road data with ${\sim}30cm$ interval covering full width of the road at 100km/h speed. The system calculates the international roughness index (IRI) from the collected data and displays the IRI and road profile data on the screen. To develope the system, we implement an optical range finder, advanced distance and motion detectors, and signal processing and display modules. The measurement accuracy of the system at 70km/h operation speed shows ${\pm}0.1m/km$ in the IRI for the standard road. To confirm the performance of the developed system, we also measure the IRI of a deployed highway road and compare the results with a conventional system and human eye measurement results.

Modern military equipments are tend to be mounted on a movable truck for their survivability and operation performance. Special units and electronic equipments installed on the truck experience the vibration caused by road roughness during their transport. The level of the transportation vibration is affected by both road conditions and vehicle speeds. In this paper, various experiments on the vibration characteristics of the equipment are carried out via road tests. Transportation vibration is also investigated by numerical analysis using FEM, and natural frequencies and random responses of the launcher are obtained. The PSD and RMS values of acceleration of the equipment are predicted and compared with test results.
