Experiments of Urban Autonomous Navigation using Lane Tracking Control with Monocular Vision (도심 자율주행을 위한 비전기반 차선 추종주행 실험)

  • Autonomous Lane detection with vision is a difficult problem because of various road conditions, such as shadowy road surface, various light conditions, and the signs on the road. In this paper we propose a robust lane detection algorithm to overcome shadowy road problem using a statistical method. The algorithm is applied to the vision-based mobile robot system and the robot followed the lane with the lane following controller. In parallel with the lane following controller, the global position of the robot is estimated by the developed localization method to specify the locations where the lane is discontinued. The results of experiments, done in the region where the GPS measurement is unreliable, show good performance to detect and to follow the lane in complex conditions with shades, water marks, and so on.

Calculation and Regulation Proposal of Light Pollution from Road Lightings (도로조명의 빛공해 계산 및 규제안 제안)

  • This is a study to establish regulations against light pollution for lighting on roads. Many kinds of light pollution by luminaire on roads was calculated and analyzed by applying the classification method of luminaires(Cut-off classification of IDA-IESNA, BUG Rating Classification) and the calculation method of Upward Lighting Ratio of CIE among measures to prevent light pollution that international lighting organizations suggest. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the regulation by Cutoff of IESNA and ULR classification of CIE could be one for scattered light of light pollution compared to BUG classification but is not sufficient for the regulation of light tresspass or glare. BUG classification by each lighting zone was suggested as threshold value of the light pollution regulation considering domestic conditions.

Study on the Development of Large Capacity LED Streetlight Luminaire with adjustable Light Distribution Characteristic (배광특성 조절이 가능한 대용량 LED 가로등기구 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Conventional streetlight with the not-adjustable light distribution characteristic is generating light pollution such as glare, damage to the crops and disturbed sleep, because beam of streetlight is not distributed evenly according to the surrounding areas and road conditions. In this paper, we proposed the new structure LED streetlight controlled light irradiation angle according to the surrounding areas and road conditions. Proposed LED streetlight are available to the adjustable light distribution characteristic using the half-circle angle control device. Result of measurement and simulation, beam angle is made available to control at least from $100^{\circ}$ up to $154^{\circ}$, average illumination exceeded 15% of KS regulation and overall uniformity exceeded more than 50% of KS regulation. the Developed large capacity LED streetlight luminaire is considered to minimize glare and light pollution and optimize uniformity ratio of illuminance.

Edge-Based Tracking of an LED Traffic Light for a Road-to-Vehicle Visible Light Communication System

  • We propose a visible light road-to-vehicle communication system at intersection as one of ITS technique. In this system, the communication between vehicle and a LED traffic light is approached using LED traffic light as a transmitter, and on-vehicle high-speed camera as a receiver. The LEDs in the transmitter are emitted in 500Hz and those emitting LEDs are captured by a high-speed camera for making communication. Here, the luminance value of each LED in the transmitter should be found for consecutive frames to achieve effective communication. For this purpose, first the transmitter should be identified, then it should be tracked for consecutive frames while the vehicle is moving, by processing the images from the high-speed camera. In our previous work, the transmitter was identified by getting the subtraction of two consecutive frames. In this paper, we mainly introduce an algorithm to track the identified transmitter in consecutive frames. Experimental results using appropriate images showed the effectiveness of the proposal.

  • Domestic road type-and period-specific driving pattern measurement was required as Korea's participation in developing "Worldwide harmonized light-duty vehicle emission test procedure (WLTP/DHC)" studied by UN WP29. This study measured road driving data reflecting road and traffic conditions of Korea, and analyzed seven types of representative road type-and period-specific driving patterns with driving pattern standardization methodology proposed by WP29. PAMS (Portable Activity Monitoring Systems) equipment was used to collect enormous (35,410km) road driving data. There are significant difference among seven derived driving patterns.

  • A 3D depth measurement system is proposed for mobile vehicles. Depth measurement system which is composed of a rotating mirror, a line laser and mono-camera is employed to detect depth, where the laser light is reflected by the mirror and projected to- the scene objects whose locations are to be determined. The obtained depth information is converted into an image. Such depth images of the road region represent even and plane while that of off-road region is irregular or textured. Road region is detected employing a simple spatial differentiation technique to detect the plain textured area. Identification results of the diverse situation of Non-linear trail are included in this paper.

  • Locations and emission characteristics of noise source of motor vehicles are great important factors to control the road traffic noise in effective ways. From results of this study on emission characteristics of engine and exhaust noise, we could find that every noise emission of different kind of vehicles has smilar pattern. The main emission locations of engine noise for the front of vehicle became the space between the road surface and bottom of the body and radiator grill, and for the side of vehicle became the space between the road surface and bottom nearby the front wheel. In case of exhaust noise of passenger-car and light truck, all the highest sound intensity level located near surface of road. But it is hard to conclude the height of noise source of driving vehicles with only results of this study. So further studies are needed to check the emission characteristics of noise.

  • The electric snow melting and deicing system by electric heating cable which is adopted in this study is a part of road facilities to keep surface temperature of the road higher than freezing point of water for melting the snow or ice accumulated on it. The electric heating cables are buried under paved road at a certain depth and a certain pitch and operated automatically and manually. Design theory, amount of heating, and installation standard vary according to economic situation, weather condition, and installation place. A main purpose of this study is figuring out the appropriate range of required heat capacity and installation depth and pitches for solving snowdrifts and freezing problems with minimum electric power consumption. This study was performed under the ambient air temperature($-2^{\circ}C$, $-5^{\circ}C$), the pitches of the electric heating cables (200 mm, 300 mm), heating value ($250\;W/m^2$, $300\;W/m^2$, $350\;W/m^2$).

  • Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data has been used to detect the objects of earth surface from huge point clouds gotten from the laser scanning system equipped on airplane. According to the precision of 3~5 points per square meter, objects like buildings, cars and roads can be easily described and constructed. Many various areas, such as hydrological modeling and urban planning adopt this kind of significant data. Researchers have been engaging in finding accurate road networks from LiDAR data recent years. In this paper, A novel algorithm with regard to extracting road points from LiDAR data has been developed based on the continuity and structural characteristics of road networks.

  • This paper proposes a new concept of optimal shortest path algorithm which reduce average vehicle wating time and improve average vehicle speed, Electro sensitive traffic system can extend the traffic cycle when three are many vehicles on the road or it can reduce the traffic cycle when there are small vehicles on the road. But electro sensitive traffic light system doesn't control that kind of function when the average vehicle speed is 10km -20km. Therefore, in this paper to reduce vehicle waiting time we developed design of traffic cycle software tool that can arrive destinination as soon as possible using optimal shortest pass algorithm. Computer simulation result proved 10%-32% reducing average vehicle wating time and average vehicle speed which can select shortest route using built in G.P.S. vehicle is better than not being able to select shortest route function.
