Comparative Analysis of Elderly's and Non-elderly's Human Traffic Accident Severity (고령운전자와 비고령운전자의 인적교통사고 심각도 비교분석)

  • This study focused on estimating influential factors of traffic accidents and analyzing traffic accident severity of elderly and non elderly using traffic accident data. In order to reclassify elderly and non elderly traffic accident by a statistical method from entire traffic accident data, multiple discriminant analysis was applied. Also ordered logit model was applied for analyzing traffic accident severities using traffic accident severities as an independent variable and transportation facilities, road conditions and human characteristics as dependent variables. As results of the comparison between elderly and non elderly traffic accident, the traffic accident severity was affected by the age, types of traffic accidents, human characteristics and road conditions as well. Also, transportation facilities and road conditions affected to more elderly traffic accident than non elderly. Therefore, traffic accident severity would be decreased with the improvement of transportation facilities and road conditions for the elderly.

Application of Mobile Mapping System for Effective Road Facility Maintenance and Management (효율적인 도로 시설물 유지관리를 위한 모바일 매핑 시스템 활용에 관한 연구)

  • According to the economic growth, many highways are constructed for increasing need of better life style. Especially roads and roadside facilities are used for accident prevention and offering mobility for drivers. For these purpose, roads and roadside facilities should be well maintained and managed. Now, many roads and roadside facilities are constructed in many areas. Because of traditional surveying method requires much time and surveying efforts, we designed and developed mobile mapping system for highway maintenance and management purpose using multi sensors. We tested our mobile mapping system and data management process. Using developed database, road managers can easily check the information of facility conditions, positions, and attributes. We are expecting low cost and efficient road maintenance process by using our system.

Design and Application of Traffic Safety Technology in Chungcheong non-urban Region (충청권 비도심 지역의 교통안전기술 설계 및 적용)

  • In previous research, we analyzed traffic accident characteristics in the Chungcheong region through factor analysis, cluster analysis, and a questionnaire using traffic accident analysis system data to enhance Korea's traffic safety. Based on the analysis results, we investigated the design and application of traffic safety technology in non-urban areas in this study. Three technologies are proposed to improve traffic safety facilities for the region: a recognition light at pedestrian crossing works, a recognition light on the road for the underprivileged in traffic works, and a safety LED sign for operation of agricultural machine works. Each technology complements the light pollution problem about snow removal and road safety when applied to existing facilities in the non-urban areas. Solar-based indigenous technology is expected to contribute to road safety in rural areas.

Effectiveness of Positive Guidance for Speed Reduction at Signalized Intersection by Using Driving Simulator (도로주행시뮬레이터를 활용한 신호교차로 속도저감에 대한 Positive Guidance 효과 연구)

  • It can prevent traffic accidents in a way as taking precautionary measures for road safety at signalized intersection in advance. Particularly, traffic accidents can be reduced at relatively low cost without redesigning alignments. That is 'Positive Guidance method' which can help prevent traffic accidents through improvement of road facilities at signalized intersection. In this study, potentially higher hazardous signalized intersection due to speeding was selected through site investigation. Field analysis at designated section was conducted and devised a plan for improvements of road facilities. Subjects drove in driving simulator in 3-D virtual reality of designated intersection. Based on data from simulator, statistical analysis(t-verification) was conducted for 'Before and After effectiveness' of speed reduction. As a result, it indicates that speed reduction was effective after improvements at each spot in driving simulator. In the future, hazardous signalized intersections which can be applied for PG method will be effective for road safety based on this research.
