The study presents the linear dynamic analysis of bridges under vehicular movement to examine the performance characteristics due to the various structural and loading conditions. The road surface roughness and bridge-vehicle interactions are considered. The road surface profiles for the approaching roadway and bridge decks are generated from power spectral density functions for different road roughness conditions. A new filtering method using the wheel trace is proposed to obtain the more rational bridge-vehicle interactions from the randomly generated road surface. The dynamic responses of various bridges designed according to current design practice are examined, in which important structural parameters(such as span length, girder spacing, etc.) are considering systematically. In addition, the traffic conditions of multi-truck traveling either consecutively on the same lane or side-by-side on the adjacent lanes are also evaluated.

In this study, the dynamic behavior of a continuous bridge under moving load is studied considering roughness of the road surface. Vehicle model includes the spring effects of axes, and due to these effects, equations of motions for the vehicle and bridge are derived in coupled form. And then iteration method is used to solve the equations. In experimental study a bridge model is constructed considering the similarity rule in order that the model exhibits dynamic behavior similar to that of prototype. Three types of roughness such as uneven random roughness, uplift on the approach and piece-wise constant roughness are used to describe road roughness. Through the numerical analysis and experiments, the effects of surface roughness, sprung mass, and velocity on the dynamic behavior of the bridge are examined.
The prediction of the dynamic response of a bridge resulting from passing vehicles across the span is a significant problem in bridge design. In this paper. the static and dynamic experiments are performed to understand the dynamic behavior of an actual two-span steel plate girder bridge. The road surface roughness of the roadway and bridge deck is directly measured by Intelligent Total Station. Numerical scheme to obtain the dynamic responses of the bridges in consideration of measuring road surface roughness and 3-D vehicle model is also presented. The bridge and vehicle are modeled as 3-D bridge and vehicle model, respectively. The main girder and concrete deck are modeled as beam and shell elements, respectively and rigid link is used for the structure between main girder and concrete deck. Bridge-vehicle interaction equations are derived and the impact factors of the responses for different vehicle speeds are calculated and compared with those predicted by several foreign specifications.

Dynamic responses of steel plate girder bridges considering road surface roughness of bridge and bridge-vehicle interaction are investigated by numerical analysis. Simply supported steel plate girder bridges with span length of 20 m, 30 m, and 40 m from "The Standardized Design of Highway Bridge Superstructure" published by the Korean Ministry of Construction are used for bridge model and the road surface roughness of bridge decks are generated from power spectral density(PSD) function for different road. Three different vehicles of 2- and 3-axle dump trucks, and 5-axle tractor-trailer(DB-24), are modeled three dimensionally. For the bridge superstructure, beam elements for the main girder, shell elements for concrete deck, and rigid links between main girder and concrete deck are used. Impact factor and DLA of steel plate girder bridges for different spans, type of vehicles and road surface roughnesses are calculated by the proposed numerical analysis model and compared with those specified by several bridge design codes.
Most automobile tire companies have not yet considered the geometric information of a road at the design stage of a tire because the topographical characterization of a road surface is very difficult owing to its vastness and randomness. A road surface shows variable surface roughness values according to magnification, and thus, the contact force between the road and tire significantly fluctuates with respect to the scale. In this study, we make an attempt to define a representative value for surface topographical information at multi-scale levels. To represent surface topography, we use a statistical method called power spectral density (PSD). We use the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and PSD to analyze the height profiles of a random surface. The FFT and PSD of a surface help in obtaining a fractal dimension, which is a representative value of surface topography at all length scales. We develop three surfaces with different fractal dimensions. We use finite element analysis (FEA) to observe the contact forces between a tire and the road surfaces with three different fractal dimensions. The results from FEA reveal that an increase in the fractal dimension decreases the contact length between the tire and road surfaces. On the contrary, the average contact force increases. This result indicates that designing and manufacturing a tire considering the fractal dimension of a road makes safe driving possible, owing to the improvement in service life and braking performance of the tire.
This paper attempts to evaluate driving stability by the vibration of human body. The purpose of this research is to establish an evaluation methodology for controling the quality of road surface. The study was conducted to investigate the relationship between road surface profiles (IRI, International Roughness Index) and the fatigue caused by the vibration of human body. Furthermore, 3-axis acceleration in driving vehicles was examined based on sampling sections under various road conditions. The acceleration value of frequency bands were analyzed by the characteristics of road surface, and realized the range of human influence by conditions and type of road surface with ISO-2631 standards. In general, more human fatigue by vehicle vibration was appeared in concrete pavements with high IRIs based on the analysis from given test data. Whereas, The SMA asphalt pavement and the diamond grinded concrete pavement reduce the human fatigue.
Among the destruction instances of half-through arch bridges, the shorter hangers are more likely to be ruined. For a thorough investigation of the hanger system durability, we have studied vehicle impact effect on hangers with vehicle-bridge coupling method for a half-through concrete-filled-steel-tube arch bridge. A numerical method has been applied to simulate the variation of dynamic internal force (stress) in hangers under different vehicle speeds and road surface roughness. The characteristics and differences in impact effect among hangers with different length (position) are compared. The impact effect is further analyzed comprehensively based on the vehicle speed distribution model. Our results show that the dynamic internal force induced by moving vehicles inside the shorter hangers is significantly greater than that inside the longer ones. The largest difference of dynamic internal force among the hangers could be as high as 28%. Our results well explained a common phenomenon in several hanger damage accidents occurred in China. This work forms a basis for hanger system's fatigue analysis and service life evaluation. It also provides a reference to the design, management, maintenance, monitoring, and evaluation for this kind of bridge.
The reliable data relating to the condition of road surface is of increasing importance to deliver the road condition to driver and road management authority. This paper describes the development of a new high-speed. automatic, road data collection system, which collects the longitudinal road data with ${\sim}30cm$ interval covering full width of the road at 100km/h speed. The system calculates the international roughness index (IRI) from the collected data and displays the IRI and road profile data on the screen. To develope the system, we implement an optical range finder, advanced distance and motion detectors, and signal processing and display modules. The measurement accuracy of the system at 70km/h operation speed shows ${\pm}0.1m/km$ in the IRI for the standard road. To confirm the performance of the developed system, we also measure the IRI of a deployed highway road and compare the results with a conventional system and human eye measurement results.
The dynamic loads imposed by moving vehicles have variations in the magnitude due to the surface roughness of the pavement systems and the larger dynamic loads than the design loads may affect the pavement performance. This paper presents variations of the moving dynamic vehicle loads due to the pavement surface roughness. This study was performed as a basic study to apply the pay factor to the surface roughness for the improvement of pavement quality and performance. The profile data was obtained from the old and new pavements and the analysis was performed to investigate the dynamic loads when vehicles move on the pavements having those profiles. The artificial profiles were also developed to find the effects of the vehicle speed, wavelength and amplitude of the surface roughness on the dynamic vehicle loads. The increase in the load magnitude due to the surface roughness affects the stresses and strains of pavements and finally reduces the pavement life. The methodology to obtain the relationship between the surface roughness and the pavement performance was proposed in this study.

This paper presents a technique to generate road surface profiles in a spatial domain using a power spectral density function. A single track power spectral density function is proposed to describe a road surface profile, which is also applicable for multi-track vehicle response analysis. The roads in lateral direction makes the relation between the coherence of the lateral tracks. The derived road surfaces are compared to ISO(International Organization for Standardization) standards. Generated road profiles are in good agreements with the target road PSD shape and measured coherence relation.
