In this paper, we address an efficient processing scheme for k-nearest neighbor queries to retrieve k static objects in road network databases. Existing methods cannot expect a query processing speed-up by index structures in road network databases, since it is impossible to build an index by the network distance, which cannot meet the triangular inequality requirement, essential for index creation, but only possible in a totally ordered set. Thus, these previous methods suffer from a serious performance degradation in query processing. Another method using pre-computed network distances also suffers from a serious storage overhead to maintain a huge amount of pre-computed network distances. To solve these performance and storage problems at the same time, this paper proposes a novel approach that creates an index for moving objects by approximating their network distances and efficiently processes k-nearest neighbor queries by means of the approximate index. For this approach, we proposed a systematic way of mapping each moving object on a road network into the corresponding absolute position in the m-dimensional space. To meet the triangular inequality this paper proposes a new notion of average network distance, and uses FastMap to map moving objects to their corresponding points in the m-dimensional space. After then, we present an approximate indexing algorithm to build an R*-tree, a multidimensional index, on the m-dimensional points of moving objects. The proposed scheme presents a query processing algorithm capable of efficiently evaluating k-nearest neighbor queries by finding k-nearest points (i.e., k-nearest moving objects) from the m-dimensional index. Finally, a variety of extensive experiments verifies the performance enhancement of the proposed approach by performing especially for the real-life road network databases.

While most research focuses on the k-nearest neighbors (kNN) queries in the database community, an important type of proximity queries called k-farthest neighbors (kFN) queries has not received much attention. This paper addresses the problem of finding the k-farthest neighbors in road networks. Given a positive integer k, a query object q, and a set of data points P, a kFN query returns k data objects farthest from the query object q. Little attention has been paid to processing kFN queries in road networks. The challenge of processing kFN queries in road networks is reducing the number of network distance computations, which is the most prominent difference between a road network and a Euclidean space. In this study, we propose an efficient algorithm called FANS for k-FArthest Neighbor Search in road networks. We present a shared computation strategy to avoid redundant computation of the distances between a query object and data objects. We also present effective pruning techniques based on the maximum distance from a query object to data segments. Finally, we demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our proposed solution with extensive experiments using real-world roadmaps.
The purpose of this study is to develop a simulation model of rural road path for infrastructure of green-tourism and public service in rural areas. This study makes an objective function for moving cost minimization considering car travel time according to road characteristics, which can route the optimal shortest road paths between the center places and all rear villages, based on GIS coverages of road-village network for connecting between center places and rural villages as input data of the model. In order to verify the model algorithm, a homogeneous hexagonal network, assuming distribution of villages with same population density and equal distance between neighborhood villages on a level plane area, was tested to simulate the optimal paths between the selected center nodes and the other rear nodes, so that the test showed reasonable shortest paths and road intensity defined in this study. The model was also applied to the actual rural area, Ucheon-myun, which is located on Hoengsung-gun, Kangwon-do, with 72 rural villages, a center village (Uhang, 1st center place) in the area, a county conte. (Hoengsung-eup, 2nd center place), and a city (Wonju, 3rd center place), as upper settlement system. The three kinds of conte. place, Uhang, Hoengsung-eup, and Wonju, were considered as center places of three scenarios to simulate the optimal shortest paths between the centers and rural villages, respectively. The simulation results on the road-village network with road information about pavement and width of road show that several spans having high intensity of road are more important that the others, while some road spans have low intensity of road.

With the foot-and-mouth disease problems emerging as a serious social issue, this study set out to analyze the problems with the current setting of preventive zones against epidemics and find ways to minimize damage through preventive measures. For those purposes, the study analyzed the outbreaks of the foot-and-mouth disease and assumed that the disease would be transmitted via vehicles along the roads based on the network map of national roads and boundaries among administrative districts to conduct network analysis. The analysis results were then used to estimate spread time, whose results were then categorized according to lineal road distance and actual road distance. Then lineal moving speed and actual moving speed on the road were obtained according to the national roads and administrative districts to analyze the problems with the current method of setting preventive zones against the foot-and-mouth disease. As for spread speed around the areas where the foot-and-mouth disease broke out, the average lineal spread speed was 53.9km/day, and the average spread speed on the road was 71.1km/day, which indicates there are problems with the current method of setting preventive zones against epidemics.

Recently, several approaches to share road conditions and/or digital contents through VANETs have been proposed, and such approaches have generally considered the radial distance from the information source as well as the TTL to provision an ephemeral, geographically-limited information sharing service. However, they implement general MANETs and have not been tailored to the constrained movement of vehicles on roads that are mostly linear. In this paper, we propose a novel application-level mechanism that can be used to share road conditions, including accidents, detours and congestion, through a VANET. We assign probabilities to roads around each of the intersections in the neighborhood road network. We then use the graph representation of the road network to build a spanning tree of roads with the information source as the root node. Nodes below the root represent junctions, and the edges represent inter-connecting road segments. Messages propagate along the branches of the tree, and as the information propagates down the branches, the probability of replication decreases. The information is replicated until a threshold probability has been reached, and our method also ensures that messages are not delivered to irrelevant vehicles, independently of their proximity to the source. We evaluated the success rate and performance of this approach using NS-3 simulations, and we used IDM car following and MOBIL lane change models to provide realistic modeling of the vehicle mobility.

The productivity, cost, and optimal forest road network density for tree-length yarding with K301-4 and HAM300 tower yarders were analyzed. The results showed that productivity decreased as the yarding distance increased. The productivity of the K301-4 was greater than that of the HAM300 as the maximum yarding distance was longer than 34 m. This difference increased as the load volume increased. As the K301-4 yarder had a higher purchase price and it took more time to set up compared to the HAM300, the HAM300 was cost effective. Therefore, in oder to introduce tower yarders to reduce operational cost, it is effective to increase the load volume during operations and to utilize the road network repeatedly for a long period.

This paper proposes a new method using multi-layer overlapped windows to improve the performance of YOLO network which is vulnerable to detect small dense objects. In particular, the proposed method uses the YOLO Network based on the multi-layer overlapped windows to track small dense vehicles that approach from long distances. The method improves the detection performance for location and size of small vehicles. It allows crossing area of two multi-layer overlapped windows to track moving vehicles from a long distance to a short distance. And the YOLO network is optimized so that GPU computation time due to multi-layer overlapped windows should be reduced. The superiority of the proposed algorithm has been proved through various experiments using captured images from road surveillance cameras.

By a development of car navigation systems and mobile or positioning technology, it increases interest in location based services, especially pedestrian navigation systems. Updating of digital maps is important because digital maps are mass data and required to short updating cycle. In this paper, we proposed change detection for different network data-sets based on areal feature matching. Prior to change detection, we defined type of updating between different network data-sets. Next, we transformed road lines into areal features(block) that are surrounded by them and calculated a shape similarity between blocks in different data-sets. Blocks that a shape similarity is more than 0.6 are selected candidate block pairs. Secondly, we detected changed-block pairs by bipartite graph clustering or properties of a concave polygon according to types of updating, and calculated Fr$\acute{e}$chet distance between segments within the block or forming it. At this time, road segments of KAIS map that Fr$\acute{e}$chet distance is more than 50 are extracted as updating road features. As a result of accuracy evaluation, a value of detection rate appears high at 0.965. We could thus identify that a proposed method is able to apply to change detection between different network data-sets.
Typically, a smart car is equipped with access to the Internet and a wireless local area network. Moreover, a smart car is equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) based navigation system that presents a map to a user for recommending the shortest path to a desired destination. This paper presents the design and implementation of a real-time shortest path search system for directed and dynamic roads. Herein, we attempt to simulate real-world road environments, while considering changes in the ratio of directed roads and in road conditions, such as traffic accidents and congestions. Further, we analyze the effect of the ratio of directed roads and road conditions on the communication cost between the server and vehicles and the arrival times of vehicles. In this study, we compare and analyze distance-based shortest path algorithms and driving time-based shortest path algorithms while varying the number of vehicles to search for the shortest path, road conditions, and ratio of directed roads.
Purpose: This study purposed to analyze the spatial accessibility of mental health institutions in Ganwon-Do using Geographic Information System and to suggest policy implications. Methodology: Network analysis was applied to assess the spatial accessibility of mental health institutions in Gangwon-Do. To perform the network analysis, network data set was built using administrative district map, road network, address of mental health institutions in Gangwon-Do. After building network data set, Two network analysis methods, 1) Service area analysis, 2) Origin Destination cost matrix were applied. Service area analysis calculated accessive areas that were within specified time. And using Origin Destination cost matrix, travel time and road travel distance were calculated between centroids of Eup, Myeon, Dong and the nearest mental health institutions. Result: After the service area analysis, it is estimated that 19.63% of the total areas in Gangwon-Do takes more than 60 minutes to get to clinic institutions. For hospital institutions, 23.08% of the total areas takes more than 60 minutes to get there. And 59.96% of Gangwon-do takes more than 30 minutes to get to general hospitals. The result of Origin-Destination cost matrix showed that most Eup Myeon Dong in Gangwon-Do was connected to the institutions in Wonju-si, Chuncheon-si, Gangneung-si. And it showed that there were large regional variation in time and distance to reach the institutions. Implication: Results showed that there were regional variations of spatial accessibility to the mental health institutions in Gangwon-Do. To solve this problem, Several policy interventions could be applied such as mental health resources allocation plan, telemedicine, providing more closely coordinated services between mental health institutions and community mental health centers to enhance the accessibility.
