In this study we try to identify the three-dimensional mixing characteristics of Seomjin River discharges in Seomjin River Estuary and Gwangyang Bay using a seasonal field observation (CTD) during spring tide and a three-dimensional numerical model with EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code). The tidal elevation conditions of the four main tidal harmonic constituents on the open boundary and river discharges and thermal effluents at the specific boundary are considered. The calculated harmonic constants of tide and tidal current agreed well with those of observations at two stations for tide and two stations for tidal current. The model successfully reproduced well known the estuarine circulation in Seomjin River Estuary where tide and river discharges are dominant forcings. In the winter mean discharges case, tidal currents move Seomjin River discharges in Seomjin River mouth and in the summer mean discharges case, river flows move Seomjin River discharges near ae Seomjin River Estuary. A three-dimensional mixing characteristics of Seomjin River Estuary show well a three-dimensional estuarine circulation and thermal effluents effect to the seasonal variation of river discharges.
Through this research of the analysis on the frequency flood discharges regarding basin property factors, a linear regression system was introduced, and as a result, the item with the highest correlation with the frequency flood discharges from Nakdong river basin is the basin area, and the second highest is the average width of basin and the river length. The following results were obtained after looking at the multi correlation between the flood discharge and the collected basin property factors using the data from the established river maintenance master plan of the one hundred twenty-five rivers in the Nakdong river basin. The result of analysis on multivariate correlation between the flood discharges and the most basic data in determining the flood discharges as basin area, river length, basin slope, river slope, average width of basin, shape factor and probability precipitation showed more than 0.9 of correlation in terms of the multi correlation coefficient and more than 0.85 for the determination coefficient. The model which induced a regression system through multi correlation analysis using basin property factors is concluded to be a good reference in estimating the design flood discharge of unmeasured basin.

The effect of discharges from the Seomjin River on the dispersion of thermal effluent from the Hadong Power Plant, located along the south coast of Korea, was investigatedusing intensive field observation and three-dimensinal Princeton Ocean Model simulations. A POM and observed CTD data was used to predict the mixing behaviour of the Summer freshet, during the July 2005 intensive observing period. The dispersal of the river discharge anomaly, associated with the Seomjin River plume, was seen to be highly responsive to tidal currents and river flows during the spring tide.

The characteristics of tidal circulation with Hyungsan River discharges in Youngil Bay by the numerical experiments is elucidated. For the simulation of tidal residual currents related to inflow by the river discharges in Youngil Bay located in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula, the two-dimensional numerical experiment is peformed. The tidal elevation boundary conditions of the 4 main tidal harmonic constituents (M₂, S₂, K₁ and O₁) on the open boundary and river discharges at the river boundary are considered. The computed results obtained from numerical experiment showed good agreements with the field observation ones. The residual currents generally flow toward the inner bay through the western (Dalman-Gap) and central areas of the bay, and then the currents go toward the outer bay along the eastern shore (Changgi-Gap) of the bay with anti-clockwise circulation. Especially, in the numerical experiment without Hyungsan River discharges, these flow patterns are disappeared. Based on the results, it showed that the Hyungsan River discharges play the dominant role in the patterns of tidal residual currents. This flow pattern of tidal residual currents are important mechanism of water quality, material transport in Youngil Bay.

The tidal discharge is defined as the quantity of water flowing through a certain cross-section per unit of time, in contrast to river discharges, tidal discharges change periodically in magnitude and direction. Thus the total volumes of water flowing into again out of the system-called flood volume and ebb volume, respectively, depend on both the tidal and the river discharges. To ditermine the tidal discharge and the flood and ebb volumes of the Yong-san river, the discharges were measured at spring, mean and neap tide and simultaneous gage reading were taken at Samhak-do, Lower Myo-do, Myongsan-ni and Naju. The general procedure for measuring the tidal discharges was as follows. First, several cross-sections were measured and one of them was chosen. First, several cross-sections were measured and one of them was chosen. Then verticals were serected in the chosen cross section. Because comparatively few verticals should be representative of the discharge distribution over the river profile, the selection was done in accordance with the somtimes irregular bottom profile. The velocities were measured with the same current meters. The observations which included water level readings were continued for a period of about 13 hours. The current direction meter, a pyramid shaped resistance body, suspend in the water on a thin wire. The bubble in a circular tilting level fixed to the wire indicates the direction of the current. Reading were taken at intervals of 1m for depths of 10m or less, and for depths over 10m at intervals of 2m, going downwards and upwards. The averages of the two velocities were used for the computation of the discharges. The discharges and the flood and ebb volumes were ditermined by a graphical method. The mean velocities, corrected for their direction when necesary, were ditermined for each time interval and each vertical, and these velocities were plotted against the time. The resulting curves show possible mistakes very clearly, and the effect of observation errors could be reduced. The corrected velocities read from the curve at half-hour intervals were multiplied by the depth at the virtical at the corresponding time. The discharges thus found were ploted against the position of the vertical in the transit and joined by a smooth curve, integration of the curve rendered the total discharges as they occurred of half-hour intervals. Plotting these total discharges against the time yeilded during the day. The flood and ebb volumes were obtained by integration of the total discharge curve.
There are more than 22,300 small streams distributed nationwide in Korea, and they have various runoff characteristics depending on basin area, topography and land use. For small stream disaster management, establishing detailed design standards suitable for the small streams is important, but most of the formulas currently proposed in the small stream design standard are based on the river design standard aimed at national and local rivers or foreign river design standards. The design-width is an important factor in determining the size of the stream. It is determined by using design-flood discharges or more variables such as design-flood discharges, basin area, slop, etc in the small stream design standard. This study collected various characteristics information such as the design-flood discharges, basin area, river length and river slop, and design-width values from 4,073 small streams distributed in 12 cities and provinces in Korea to suggest the appropriated design-width formula. This study developed two design-width formulas by using the regression analysis which one is using the design-flood discharges and the other is using various variables such as the design-flood discharges, basin area, river length and river slope collected from the small steams. It is expected that both equations developed in here can be used for small stream disaster management, such as improving small stream design standard or establishing a comprehensive small stream maintenance plan.
The effect of Combined Sewer Overflow on the river system was investigated throughout three preliminary field tests and three main ones. As a result of the study, Combined Sewer Overflow did not affect water qualities on the main stream since the concentration of the main stream did not significantly changed during rainfall events although the water quality of tributaries has rapidly deteriorated due to the influence of the Combined Sewer Overflow during rainfall events. The main cause of the result is that the flow rate of the tributaries is considerably lower than that of the main stream, so that the tributaries with deteriorated water quality during rainfall events did not significantly affect the quality of the actual main stream. Therefore, the water quality of the Kumho River is more affected by the wastewater treatment facilities that discharges water continuously to the main stream than pollutants from non-point pollution sources during rainfall events. As a result, managements for discharges from wastewater treatment facilities should be strengthened in order to improve the water quality of the river.
This research estimated stream discharges indirectly by hydraulic channel routing. Only stage data from three stage stations and river cross section data were used to estimate Manning roughness coefficients and to compute stream discharges. When the discharges were estimated a stage-stage set of conditions was used for upstream-downstream boundary conditions. The research used the data from the upper Mississippi River. The hydraulic channel routings were performed by DWOPER (operational dynamic wave model). The global optimization program of SCE-UA was used to improve the roughness coefficient estimation module of the modified Newton-Raphson method in DWOPER. The results from SCE-US were better. For the case study of a flood, most estimated discharges except a few show errors within 10%.
In the present study the methods proposed by Fuller and Sangal were evaluated to estimate the peak flood discharge based on the mean daily discharges during a flood period. The total of 198 flood events observed at seven stage gauging stations in the Han River basin were analyzed. The result showed that the peak flood discharges estimated based on the mean daily flows have a relatively high correlation with the observed peak floods. Hence, a regionalized relation and method is proposed for a possible application to estimate the peak flood discharges at the stage gauging stations with no hourly flood stage data, but with the mean daily stages.
For estimating discharge and pollution loads into the Yeongsan lake, a conceptual watershed model HSPF(Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran) was applied to the Yeongsan River Basin. Various spatial data set including DEM, watershed boundaries and land uses were used to set up the model for the Yeongsan River Basin that was divided into 45 sub-basins. The model was calibrated and validated for the river discharges, SS, BOD, TN and TP concentrations against the data observed in 2011 at several monitoring stations. The simulation results show good agreement with the observed water flows($R^2$ = 0.46 - 0.97, NSE = 0.70 - 0.96). The simulated concentrations of SS, BOD, TN and TP are also in good agreement with the observed. The total freshwater discharge to the Yeongsan lake is estimated $2,406{\times}10^6m^3/year$ which the Jiseok and Hwangryoung stream contribute as much as 19%, 17% respectively. It is estimated that the total discharges to the Youngsan lake is SS 152,327 ton/year, BOD 15,721 ton/year, TN 10,071 ton/year, TP 563 ton/year. Both water and pollution loads are high in summer, particularly in July, when the monsoon season arrives at the Korean peninsula.
