  • The effect of Fe and BO3 doping on structure, thermal, and electrical properties of Li1+xFexTi2-x(PO4)3-y(BO3)y (x = 0.2, 0.5)-based glass and glass ceramics was investigated. In addition, their crystallization behavior during sintering and ionic conductivity were also investigated in terms of sintering temperature. FT-IR and XPS results indicated that Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions in Li1+xFexTi2-x(PO4)3-y(BO3)y glass worked as a network modifier (FeO6 octahedra) and also as a network former (FeO4 tetrahedra). In the case of the glass with low substitution of BO3, boron formed (PB)O4 network structure, while boron preferred BO3 triangles or B3O3 boroxol rings with increasing the BO3 content owing to boic oxide anomaly, which can result in an increased non-bridging oxygen. The glass transition temperature (GTT) and crystallization temperature (CT) was lowered as the BO3 substitution was increased, while Fe2+ lowered the GTT and raised the CT. The ionic conductivity of Li1+xFexTi2-x(PO4)3-y(BO3)y glass ceramics were 8.85×10-4 and 1.38×10-4S/cm for x = 0.2 and 0.5, respectively. The oxidation state of doped Fe and boric oxide anomaly were due to the enhanced lithium ion conductivity of glass ceramics.

  • X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray fluorescence analysis, thermal differential and thermos gravimetric analysis, cation exchange capacity analysis, and Cesium (Cs), Strontium (Sr) adsorption experiments were performed to investigate the physical and chemical properties of natural zeolite from Guryongpo in Korea. As a result of X-ray diffraction analysis, minerals such as mordenite, heulandite, clinoptilolite, and illite are contained, and as a result of X-ray fluorescence analysis, elements such as SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, K2O, MgO, Fe2O3 and Na2O are contained, and the cation exchange capacity was 148.6 meq/100 g. As a result of thermal differential and thermos gravimetric analysis, it was confirmed that the thermal stability was excellent up to 600 ℃. As a result of the adsorption equilibrium experiment over time, the equilibrium was reached within 30 min. for Cesium (Cs) and within 8 hr. for Strontium (Sr), and the adsorption rates of Cesium (Cs) and Strontium (Sr) were 80% and 18%, respectively. As a result of the single-component isothermal adsorption experiment, in conformed to the Langmuir model, and the maximum Cesium (Cs) adsorption amount was 131.5 mg/g, which was high, while the Strontium (Sr) maximum adsorption amount was 29.5 mg/g, which was low. In the case of the natural zeolite used in this study, the content of minerals including 8-rings such as clinoptilolite, heulandite, and mordenite is high, showing high selectivity for Cesium (Cs).

  • New years' rites serve a religious function to wish for well-being during the year by bidding farewell to the previous year and welcoming the next. In Japan, in mid-December, to welcome Toshigami, kadomatsu, and shimenawagazari are prepared, as well as osechi ryori to be eaten at the beginning of the year. On New Year's Day, people go to shrines and bow to the gods while saying Hatsumode (初詣). On the fifteenth day of the first month, in the course of a rite called Dondoyaki, all the decorations used in the first month and the amulet used in the previous year are burned. In Korea, when the Lunar New Year approaches, people prepare for their ancestral rites and clean their houses. On the first day of the new year, people hold ancestral rites for their ancestors. There are many different seasonal rites, taking place from the beginning of the year to the full moon. In China, Danwonban (團圓飯), in which the whole family sits together and eats on New Year's Eve, is important. Lights are brightly lit up all night, and the sound of firecrackers outside rings out loudly. On the door, the word chun-ryun is attached to wish for prosperity in the new year. According to the cycle of the four seasons, the first lunar month contains a high proportion of the seasonal rites that are repeated every year. The first month represents the beginning of a year, and various rituals are performed in order to wish for good health and abundance during the coming year. In addition, the "folk religious world view" is integral to annual new years' rites, so it is not difficult to understand the religious character and structure of the Korean, Chinese, and Japanese annual ceremonies. This study examines the current status of annual new years' rites in Korea, China, and Japan, and how the rites are structured according to the inflection points in the year. In addition, religious characteristics are reviewed in terms of gods, predictions, and fertility prayers, exorcisms, health, and restoration. In this way, it can be seen that various religious elements such as shamanism, agricultural faith, ancestor worship, Shintoism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism can be witnessed in the annual new years' rites of Korea, China, and Japan. In addition, differences in the presence or absence of these are shown to depend on the country.

  • Background: Numerous surgical devices for mitral repair have been used in the past with good results. In this study we describe a simple annuloplasty technique with using a new device ($Mitracon^{(R)}$). The aim of this study was to assess its efficacy and surgical results with using $Mitracon^{(R)}$. Material and Method: From May 2003 to October 2005, 46 patients (21 women and 25 men (mean age of $51.4{\pm}17.8$ years) with mitral regurgitation from various causes were treated with either the $Mitracon^{(R)}$ (the $Mitracon^{(R)}$ group) or the Capentier Edward rigid ring (the CE group). The median follow-up duration was 18.9 months. Result: The mean grade of mitral regurgitation before and immediately after surgery in the $Mitracon^{(R)}$ group and the CE group decreased from $3.2{\pm}0.8$ to $0.6{\pm}0.7$ and $3.4{\pm}0.7$ to $0.3{\pm}0.5$, respectively. There were no significant changes in the ejection fraction either between the two groups or before and immediately after surgery. No deaths were seen in either group. Early postoperative echocardiography of all 46 patients showed only trivial mitral regurgitation or none at all. Echocardiography at a median of 18.9 months also showed no progression in mitral regurgitation. The mean grade of mitral regurgitation in the $Mitracon^{(R)}$ group at this time point decreased from $3.2{\pm}0.8$ to $0.8{\pm}0.7$ (p<0.05). The CE group also showed a similar degree of decrease from $3.4{\pm}0.7$ to $0.3{\pm}0.6$ (p<0.05). The mitral valve area in the $Mitracon^{(R)}$ group at 1 year follow-up was $3.3{\pm}0.9cm^2$. The mitral valve area in the CE group was $2.7{\pm}0.6cm^2$. The mean mitral pressure gradient in the $Mitracon^{(R)}$ group at 1 year follow-up was $3.1{\pm}1.3$ mmHg. The mean pressure gradient in the CE group was $4.5{\pm}2.1$ mmHg, although any statistical significant difference for this between the groups was not reached. Conclusion: The present study showed the described technique to be safe and effective in the intermediate term. Because long term results are unavailable, a more extensive prospective randomized multicenter trial may be warranted to determine whether this procedure should be generally applied for repair of mitral valve disease.

  • Deposition of atmospheric N that is depleted in $^{15}N$ has shown to decrease N isotope ratio ($^{15}N/^{14}N$,expressed as ${\delta}^{15}N$) of forest samples such as tree rings, foliage, and total soil-N. However, its effect on ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral soil-N which is biologically active N pool has never been tested. In this study, ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N($NH{_4}^+$ and $NO_3{^-}$) in forest soils from organic and two depths of mineral soil layers (0 to 20 cm and 20 to 40cm depth) of Pinus densiflora stands located at two distinct areas (rural and industrial areas) in southern Korea was analyzed to investigate if there is any difference in ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N between these areas. We also evaluated potential N loss of the study sites using ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N. Across the soil layers, the ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NH{_4}^+$ ranged from +8.9 to +24.8‰ in the rural area and from +4.4 to +13.8‰ in the industrial area. Soils from organic layer (+4.4‰) and mineral layer between 0 and 20 cm (+13.8‰) of industrial area showed significantly lower ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NH{_4}^+$ than those of rural area (+8.9 and +24.3‰, respectively), probably indicating the greater contribution of $^{15}N$-depleted $NH{_4}^+$ from atmospheric deposition to forest in the industrial area than in the rural area. Meanwhile, ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NO_3{^-}$ was not different between the rural and industrial areas, probably because ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NO_3{^-}$ is more likely to be altered by the N loss that causes $^{15}N$ enrichment of the remaining soil N pool. Compared with the ${\delta}^{15}N$ of soil mineral N reported by other studies (from -10.9 to +15.6‰ for $NH{_4}^+$ and -14.8 to +5.6‰ for $NO_3{^-}$), the ${\delta}^{15}N$ observed in our study was substantially high, suggesting that the study sites are more subject to the N loss. It was concluded that $NH{_4}^+$ rather than $NO_3{^-}$ can conserve the ${\delta}^{15}N$ signature of atmospheric N deposition in forest ecosystems.
