Residual shear strength is an important parameter in landslide dynamics and may be considered the critical factor in landslide triggering. Tests were undertaken using Jumunjin sands to examine the effects of smooth and rough surfaces on ring-shear characteristics. Under dense and drained conditions, shear velocities were recorded as 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 50, 100 mm s-1, with shear strength increasing with velocity and producing increasingly fine content. Particle fragmentation may thus increase landslide mobilization when the landslide body is mixed with ambient water in channelized flows.

In this study, an alternative bend design is proposed to overcome the aging problem in piping bends. In this design, the foam pad is not included. Finite element analysis was performed based on the total pipe diameter. From this analysis, the shape of the Shear Control Ring (SCR) was determined. Temperature, stress, and other data of the proposed reinforced pipe were acquired and analyzed after the test was performed. The value of the thermal stress for the reinforced steel pipe satisfied the required standard without the foam pad based on the manufacturing of the reinforced fitting and construction site of the test. The reinforcement provided a shear strength level for the foam pad that resulted in maximum shear stress less than stress based on the original foam pad applied at the pipe bend. Additionally, an increasing factor of safety effect for the reinforced fitting application was discovered.

The joint parts was composed of inner AL(aluminum) ring, FRP wedge and motor case which was manufactured by filament wound method. Where the motor case consists of helical and hoop layer. The finite element analysis was performed for the design variable of joint parts to improve the performance of motor case. Where the adhesive layer was modeled to elasto-perfect plastic material and the contact condition of AL ring and wedge was modeled by using the contact surface element of ABAQUS. And the sliding distance of AL ring and the hoop strain of composite case were compared to hydro-static test results to verify the accuracy of analysis results. When wedge and AL ring was perfect bonding, though the hoop strain of joint part was reduced, the maximum shear stress was occurred at the adhesive layer. Thus the adhesive layer had failed due to the high shear stress before the failure was occurred at the case. And as another design method, when wedge and AL ring was contact condition, the shear stress on adhesive layer was decreased. But the hoop stress of joint part increased due to the sliding behavior of AL ring. Finally, the fail was occurred at the composite case of joint part. The improved joint method reinforced by hoop layer to the joint parts under contact condition for wedge and Al. ring reduced the joint part's hoop strain by constraint the sliding behavior of AL ring.
Dynamic shear tests for the tough-pitch copper at high strain and high strain rate was performed. The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) compression test system was modified to yield a shear deformation in the specimen. Hat-shaped specimens for the tough-pitch copper were adopted to generate high strain of γ=3~4 and high strain-rate of γ= 10$^4$/s. The dynamic analysis by ABAQUS 5.5/EXPLICIT code verified that shear zone can be localized in hat-shaped specimens. A proper impact velocity and the axial length of the shear localization region wert determined through the elastic wave analysis. The displacement in a hat-shaped specimen is limited by a spacer ring which was installed between the specimen and the incident bar. The shear bands were obtained by measuring the direction of shear deformation and the width of deformed grain in the shear zone. The decrease of specimen length has been measured on the optical displacement transducer. Dynamic shear stress-strain relations in the tough-pitch copper were obtained at two strain-rates.
Purpose: Considering the rising frequency of earthquakes in Korea, it is crucial to revise the rainfall thresholds for landslide triggering following earthquake events. This study was conducted to provide scientific justification and preliminary data for adjusting rainfall thresholds for landslide early warnings after earthquakes through soil physical experiments. Method: The study analyzed the change in soil shear strength by direct shear tests on disturbed and undisturbed samples collected from cut slopes. Also, The study analyzed the soil strength parameters of remolded soil samples subjected to drying and wetting conditions, focusing on the relationship between the degree of saturation after submergence and the strength parameters. Result: Compaction water content variation in direct shear tests showed that higher water content and saturation in disturbed samples led to a significant decrease in cohesion (over 50%) and a reduction in shear resistance angle (1~2°). Additionally, during the ring shear tests, the shear strength was observed to gradually decrease once water was supplied to the shear plane. The maximum shear strength decreased by approximately 65-75%, while the residual shear strength decreased by approximately 53-60%. Conclusion: Seismic activity amplifies landslide risk during subsequent rainfall, necessitating proactive mitigation strategies in earthquake-prone areas. This research is anticipated to provide scientific justification and preliminary data for reducing the rainfall threshold for landslide initiation in earthquake-susceptible regions.

Factors influencing shear behavior of granular material include particle size, shape, distribution, relative density, particle crushing, etc. In this study, these factors are characterized by viewpoint of shear behavior using numerical analysis based on DEM. Geometrical particle shape is represented by a combination of small circular particles and influence of particle shape on crushing is studied through relative comparisons between clump (uncrushable) and cluster (crushable) models which are modeled using DEM. Also, particle shape is quantified by the dimensionless parameters such as circularity and convexity. The results indicate that particle shape indexes have a negative association with internal friction angle. Also, internal friction angle becomes reduced and failure envelop curve becomes nonlinear due to the particle crushing. It is also found that numerical results are quite good agreement with the experimental test conducted in this study.
Several additives are used to enhance the geotechnical properties (e.g., shear wave velocity, shear modulus) of soils to provide sustainable, economical and eco-friendly solutions in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering. In this study, piezoelectric ring actuators are used to measure the shear wave velocity of unreinforced, fiber, cemented, and fiber reinforced cemented Toyoura sand. One dimensional oedometer tests are performed on medium dense specimens of Toyoura sand-cement-fiber-silica flour mixtures with different percentages of silica flour (0-42%), fiber and cement (e.g., 0-3%) additives. The experimental results indicate that behavior of the mixtures is significantly affected by the concentration of silica flour, fiber and cement additives. Results show that with the addition of 1-3% of PVA fibers, the shear wave velocity increases by only 1-3%. However, the addition of 1-4% of cement increases the shear wave velocity by 8-35%. 10.5-21% increase of silica flour reduces the shear wave velocity by 2-5% but adding 28-42% silica flour significantly reduces the shear wave velocity by 12-31%. In addition, the combined effect of cement and fibers was also found and with only 2% cement and 1% fiber, the shear wave velocity increase was found to be approximately 24% and with only 3% cement and 3% fibers this increased to 35%. The results from this study for the normalized shear modulus and normalized mean effective stress agree well with previous findings on pure Toyoura sand, Toyoura silty sand, fiber reinforced, fiber reinforced cemented Toyoura sand. Any variations are likely due to the difference in stress history (i.e., isotropic versus anisotropic consolidation) and the measurement method. In addition, these small discrepancies could be attributed to several other factors. The potential factors include the difference in specimen sizes, test devices, methods of analysis for the measurement of arrival time, the use of an appropriate Ko to convert the vertical stresses into mean effective stress, and sample preparation techniques. Lastly, it was investigated that there is a robust inverse relationship between α factor and 𝞫0 exponent. It was found that less compressible soils exhibit higher 𝜶 factors and lower 𝞫0 exponents.
Perforated steel beams can be optimised by increased beam depth and the moment of inertia combined with a reduced web thickness, favouring the use of original I-section beams. The designers are often confronted with situations where optimisation cannot be carried out effectively, taking account of the buckling risk at web posts, moment-shear transfers and local plastic deformations on the transverse holes of the openings. The purpose of this study is to suggest solutions for reducing these failure risks of tested optimal designed beams under applying loads in a self-reacting frame. The design method for the beams is the hunting search optimisation technique, and the design constraints are implemented from BS 5950 provisions. Therefore, I have aimed to explore the strengthening effects of reinforced openings with ring stiffeners, welded vertical simple plates on the web posts and horizontal plates around the openings on the ultimate load carrying capacities of optimally designed perforated steel beams. Test results have shown that compared to lateral stiffeners, ring and vertical stiffeners significantly increase the loadcarrying capacity of perforated steel beams.

The structural adhesives have the advantage of improving automobile performances and are being applied to joining light weight materials like aluminium and composite. In order to characterize the impact behavior of structural adhesive, instrumented impact tests were performed with respect to pin-ring adhesively bonded joint specimens. Also dynamic FE analysis was carried out using LS-DYNA to compare the results with experiments.
