Widely Tunable Coupled-ring Reflector Laser Diode Consisting of Square Ring Resonators

  • We design and fabricate a widely tunable laser diode made of InGaAsP-InP. The diode is monolithically integrated with a wavelength-selective coupled-ring reflector and semiconductor amplifiers. For realization of a compact size device, deeply etched multi-mode interference couplers and square ring resonators composed of total-internal-reflection mirrors are adopted and fabricated using a self-aligned process. It is demonstrated that the laser diode exhibits single mode operation and 16 nm tuning range with side-mode-suppression-ratio exceeding 20 dB.

  • In this paper, an S-band oscillator of the low phase noise property using miniaturized microstrip hairpin shaped ring resonator has been designed and implemented. The TACONIC's RF-35 substrate has a dielectric constant ${\varepsilon}_r$=3.5 a thickness h=20mil a copper thickness t=17 um and loss tangent $tan{\delta}$=0.0025. The designed and implemented 2.45 GHz oscillator shows low phase performance of -100.5 dBc/Hz a 100kHz offset. Output power 20.9 dBm at center frequency 2.45 GHz and harmonic suppression -32 dBc. The circuit was implemented with hybrid technique. But can be fully compatible with the RFIC's, MIC and MMIC due to its entirely planar structure.

Design and Fabrication of UWB Antenna Using the SRR for WLAN Band Rejection (SRR을 이용한 WLAN 대역 저지용 UWB 안테나의 설계 및 제작)

  • In this paper, a novel UWB(Ultra Wide-band) antenna with suppressed band of IEEE 802.11a($5.15{\sim}5.825\;GHz$) WLAN was designed and fabricated by using SRR(Split Ring Resonator) with band rejection property. MWS(Micro-wave Studio) of CST company was utilized in the design stage. The antenna was fabricated on a substrate, Rogers 4003, with the thickness of 0.8 mm and relative permittivity of 3.38. The measured result shows that the proposed antenna has a good return loss below -10 dB and group delay below 1nsec over UWB communication band($3.1{\sim}10.6\;GHz$) except WLAN band. It also shows the omni-directional radiation pattern.

  • In this paper, we proposed a novel ethanol concentration sensor using microfluidic metamaterial absorber. The metamaterial absorber comprises a split-ring-cross resonator(SRCR) and a microfluidic channel. The SRCR can generate LC resonance that is very sensitive to changes in the effective dielectric constant around the capacitive gap. In addition, microfluidic channels can change the effective dielectric constant of the dielectric substrate by using an infinitesimal quantity of a liquid on the order of microliters. The proposed absorber can detect the electrical properties of different concentration of ethanol. The performance of the proposed absorber is demonstrated using the absorption measurements of a fabricated prototype sample with waveguides. In addition, the simulated results and measurement results show good agreement.

Design of CPW-Fed Broadband Antenna Using the CSRR for WLAN Band Notched Characteristic (CSRR을 이용한 WLAN 대역 저지 특성 CPW 급전 광대역 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, a broadband antenna of the CPW structure with a band-notched characteristic is presented. To obtain this characteristic, the complementary split ring resonator(CSRR) is inserted in the ground plane. In addition, the IEEE 802.11a WLAN band(5.15~5.825 GHz) appears in the band-notched characteristic. The proposed antenna dimension is $36{\times}60{\times}1.6\;mm^3$, and it is designed on the FR-4 substrate having a relative dielectric constant of 4.4. The designed antenna shows that the resonant frequency is 2.03~10.78 GHz below the return loss of -10 dB and a VSWR less than 2 was satisfied. As a result, the proposed CSRR has a band-notched characteristic in the range of 4.917~6.017 GHz which the center frequency is about 5.4 GHz band.

  • In this paper, a double split-ring resonator(DSRR) is proposed to improve the isolation between Vivaldi antenna elements. The DSRR was designed using a unit cell simulation and applied to a $1{\times}2$ Vivaldi antenna array to confirm the improvement in the isolation. The unit cell size of the proposed DSRR is $5mm{\times}5mm{\times}1.52mm$ and six unit cells are used. To verify the performance of the proposed DSRR, $1{\times}2$ Vivaldi antenna arrays with and without the DSRR were fabricated and measured. The results show an isolation improvement of 20 dB in the Vivaldi antennas with the DSRR when compared to the Vivaldi antennas without the DSRR.

  • A widely tunable add/drop filter composed of double ring resonators is implemented with high-index-contrast polymer waveguide. To enhance the productivity, directional couplers are designed to have good fabrication tolerance. The refractive indices of the core and cladding in the 1550 nm wavelength are 1.51 and 1.378, respectively. Drop response in comparison with neighborhood peak gets enhanced by more than 2.9 dB at the wavelength where both rings resonate. This filter can be used to build widely tunable laser diode through hybrid-integration with reflective SOA.

Analysis of Periodic Stepped Impedance Ring Resonator by the Effect of Step Perturbation and Application of Dual-Mode Bandpass Filter (스텝 Perturbation의 영향에 따른 주기적 스텝 임피던스 링 공진기의 해석 및 이중 모드 대역 통과 필터의 적용)

  • Dual-mode bandpass filter was designed by using periodic stepped impedance ring resonator with step perturbation. The periodic stepped impedance ring resonator has the effects of size reduction and $2^{nd}$ harmonic suppression by changing characteristic impedance ratio. The perturbation for dual-mode generation was also easily controlled by characteristic impedance ratio, and the variation of dual-mode resonant frequencies and attenuation pole frequencies were analyzed by the effect of step perturbation. Chip capacitors were used for input/output coupling, and the variation of center frequency by the coupling capacitance and step perturbation was also considered. From the results, two types of 2 GHz dual-mode bandpass filter were fabricated in size of $14{\times}14mm^2$, those have different attenuation poles and bandwidths. The measured results of proposed bandpass filters showed a good agreement with the calculated estimations, and those have insertion loss of 2.52, 0.52 dB and 3 dB bandwidth of 4.03, 15.02 %, respectively.

Polymer Optical Microring Resonator Using Nanoimprint Technique (나노 임프린트 기술을 이용한 폴리머 링 광공진기)

  • A polymer optical microring resonator, which is laterally coupled to a straight bus waveguide, has been proposed and demonstrated using a nanoimprint technique. The propagation loss of the ring waveguide and the optical power coupling between the ring and bus waveguides was calculated by using a beam propagation method, then the dependence of the device performance on them was investigated using a transfer matrix method. We have especially introduced an imprint stamp incorporating a smoothing buffer layer made of a silicon nitride thin film. This layer played an efficient role in improving the sidewall roughness of the waveguide pattern engraved on the stamp and thus reducing the scattering loss. As a result the overall Q factor of the resonator was greatly increased. Also it reduced the gap between the ring and bus waveguides effectively to enhance the coupling between them, without relying on the direct writing method based on an e-beam writer. As for the achieved device performance at the wavelength of 1550 nm, the quality factor, the extinction ratio, and the free spectral range were ~103800, ~11 dB, and 1.16 m, respectively.

Design of Band Pass Ring Filter for Ultra Wideband (UWB용 대역통과 링 필터의 설계)

  • In this paper, a novel ultra-wide band filter which is operating at frequency bands from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz is suggested. It is modified from the conventional ring filter and consisted of a ring with two parallel open-stub with length of ${\lambda}/8$. It improves the sharpness of the conventional ring filter and is compact. The measured results show that the fabricated filter has a insertion loss of 2.1 dB and the measured group delay of the filter is less than 463 ps through UWB frequency bands.
