  • This paper is an experimental and numerical research works about the effects of the b earing capacity of sloped rubble mound on the density of rubble mound and the position of footing. Centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the bearing capacity of rubble m ound by changing the density of rubble mound and the location of loading in forms of s trip loading to simulate the caisson. Materials of rubble mound used in the model tests were crushed rocks having similar value of uniformity coefficient to the value in field. Two different relative densities of 80% and 90% were prepared during tests. The dimens ions of centrifuge model were trapezoidal shape of model mound having the bottom wid th of mound, 30cm and height of mound, 10cm. Gravity level applied during the centrif uge test was 50G. Surcharge loading in the forms of strip loading was applied on the t op of the sloped model mound. Tests were carried out by changing the position of loadi ng. The rigid model footing was located in the center of top of the model rubble mound and the edge of model footing was at the crest of mound. Test results were analyzed by using the limit equilibrium methods proposed by Meyer hof(1957) and Bowles(1982) and the numerical approach with FLAC being available com mercially software. For the numerical estimations with FLAC, the rubble mound was si mulated with the constitutive relationship of Mohr-Coulomb elasto-plastic model.

  • The use of turbocharger in internal combustion engines has increased as it is a key components for improving system efficiency without increasing engine size. Because of increasing demand, many studies have evaluated rotordynamic performance so as to increase rotation speed. This paper presents a linear and nonlinear analysis model for a turbocharger rotor supported by a floating ring bearing. We constructed rotor model by using the finite element method and approximated bearings as being infinitely short. In the linear model, we considered fluid film force as stiffness and damping element. In nonlinear analysis, calculation of the fluid film force involved solving the time dependent Reynolds equation. We verified the developed model by comparing the results to those of previous research. The analysis results show that there are four unstable modes, which are rigid body modes combining ring and rotor motion. As the rotating speed increases, the logarithmic decrement shows that certain unstable modes goes into the stable area or the stable mode goes into the unstable area. These unstable modes appear as sub-synchronous vibrations in nonlinear analysis. In nonlinear analysis frequency jump phenomenon demonstrated in several experimental studies appears. The analysis results also showed that frequency jump phenomenon occurs when the vibration mode changes and the sequence of unstable mode matches the linear analysis result. However, the natural frequency predicted using linear analysis differs from those obtained using nonlinear analysis.

  • Precise propulsion shafting alignment of ships is very important to prevent damage of its support bearings due to excessive reaction forces caused by hull deflection, forces acted on propeller and crankshaft, and so forth. In this paper, a new iterative shafting alignment calculation procedure considering the interaction between shaft deflection and oil film pressure of Sterntube Journal Bearing (SJB) bush with single or multiple slopes is proposed. The procedure is based on a pressure analysis to evaluate distributed equivalent support stiffness of SJB by solving Reynolds equation and a deflection analysis of shafting system by a finite element method based on Timoshenko beam theory. SJB is approximated with multi-point biaxial elastic supports equally distributed to its length. Their initial stiffness values are estimated from dynamic reaction force calculated by assuming SJB as single rigid support. Then, the shaft deflection and the support stiffness of SJB are sequentially and iteratively calculated by applying a criteria on deflection variation between sequential calculation results. To demonstrate validity and applicability of the proposed procedure for optimal slope design of SJB, numerical analysis results for a shafting system are described.

  • In this study, the seismic fragility curve according to the boundary conditions is created for a two-pylon concrete cable-stayed bridge, and the effect of the boundary conditions on the seismic fragility of the target bridge is evaluated. An analysis model for the target bridge is constructed using Midas Civil, and a nonlinear time history analysis is performed by applying the fiber element, concrete and rebar material models. The boundary conditions between the pylon and the stiffened girder are classified into four types: rigid, unconstrained, pot bearing, and seismic isolation bearing, and the seismic fragility curves are created for each boundary condition. The plastic hinge section of the pylon, the connection part, and the cable are selected as weak members, and the earthquake vulnerability curve is created for them. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the seismic isolation bearing model shows the lowest damage probability in the pylon and the connection part, and the seismic fragility of the cable is less affected by the boundary conditions than other members.

  • This paper is to investigate the bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of slope subjected to strip surcharges adjassent to embankment slope of sandy soil. Parametric model tests under plain strain condition were performed by changing width of footing, relative density of slope materials, and position of footing from the crest of slopes. For model tests, Jumunjin standard sand was used as the slope material and its relative density was 45% and 70%, respectively. The angle of slope was formed with 1 : 1.5 and 1 2. Rigid model footings, made of aluminuu were used with their widths of 4, 7, 10 and 12cm. For the position of model footing, position ratios, distance of model footing from the crest of slope divided by footing width, were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Failure mechanism was observed by using ink colored sands and markers inserted in model slopes. Ultimate bearing capacity obtained from tests was analyzed and compared with limit equilibrium method, limit analysis method and empirical equation. Characteristics of load-settlement curves and failure mechanism were also analyzed and compared with the existing theories. Thus, their effects on ultimate bearing capacity of model footing adjacent to slope were assessed.

  • Recently, several researches on the development of new economical foundation types have been performed to support floating structures as many offshore structures have been constructed. This study focused on the evaluation of bearing capacity of group suction piles, which are connected by a concrete pile cap. The offshore floating structures are mainly subjected to horizontal loading, so the horizontal bearing capacities of the group suction piles were analyzed by performing 3-dimensional finite element analyses. The group suction piles are expected to behave as a rigid pile due to its shallow embedded depth. Therefore, the detailed soil modeling was necessary to simulate the bearing behavior of soils under low confining pressure. The modulus and the strength of soils were modelled to increase with effective confining pressure in soils. For the parametric study, the center-to-center spacing between piles was varied and two soil types of clay and sands were applied. The analyses results showed that the yielding load of the group pile increased with the increase of the pile spacing and the yielding load of the group piles with 5D spacing was about 3 times larger than that of the single pile with free rotation.

  • The effect of raft flexibility on piled raft foundations in sandy soil was investigated using a numerical analysis and an analytical study. The investigation's emphasis was the load sharing between piles and raft following the raft rigidity (KR), end-bearing conditions. The case of individual piles and subsequently the response of groups of piles was analyzed using a 3D FEM. This study shows that the αpr, load-sharing ratio of piled raft foundations, decreases as the vertical loading increases and as the KR decreases. This tendency is more obvious when using friction piles compared to using end-bearing piles. The effect of raft rigidity is found to be more significant for the axial force distribution - each pile within the foundations has almost similar axial forces of the pile head with a flexible raft; however, each pile has different values with rigid rafts, especially with the end-bearing piles. The axial force of the pile base with floating piles shows similar point-bearing resistance for all the piles; however, it shows different values with end-bearing piles. The differential settlement ratio of rafts showed a larger value with lower KR.

  • Using flexible multibody system dynamic method, the rigid-flexible coupling multibody dynamic analysis model of the drum brake system was developed, and the kinematic and dynamic simulation of the system was processed as its object of study. Simulations show that the friction will increase with the dynamic friction coefficient, but high dynamic friction coefficient will cause the abnormal vibration and worsen the stability of the brake system, even the stability of the whole automobile. The modeling of flexible multi-body can effectively analyze and solve complex three-dimensional dynamic subjects of brake system and evaluate brake capability. Further research and study on this basis will result in a convenient and effective solution that can be much helpful to study, design and development of the brake system.

  • Zinc galvanized steel plates(sections) of annular corrugations have been used in buried steel culverts. These structures are referred to by a variety of names such as flexible pipes, buried pipes, soil-steel bridges, corrugated steel culverts, and etc. Buried corrugated steel structures show flexible behaviour under the soil load. compared with concrete box structures. Finite element analysis was performed to suggest the reasonable connecting method between the flexible steel culverts and the rigid concrete box. It was predicted that perfectly constrained connections could induce the excessive stress in steel plates. Therefore elastic bearing connections that allow vertical displacement at the connecting point were applied.

  • Dynamic analysis using impulse responses is formulated to estimate effect of slider rail shape on dynamic responses in near-field optical recording drive. Impulse responses are obtained on numerical nonlinear model including rigid motion of a slider and fluid motion of an air bearing under the slider. Dynamic characteristics of slider motion are evaluated by utilizing the decay ratio of impulse responses and modal frequencies from frequency response functions. The dynamic characteristics of the designed NFR slider are checked by comparing those of a HDD slider(Nutcracker). Also, sensitivities of slider Position conditions and rotation speed on the dynamic characteristics are investigated.
