  • In this work, a broadband composite right/left-handed (CRLH) half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) quadrature Wilkinson power divider is proposed. The proposed CRLH-HMSIW quadrature power divider includes a microstrip Wilkinson power divider on the transition structure between the microstrip and HMSIW, and two thru transmission lines for the HMSIW and the CRLH-HMSIW. The measured amplitude, phase difference and isolation between the two output ports of the proposed structure have 1 dB, ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ and less than -15 dB in a wide frequency range of 4.1-6.68 GHz with 47.9% bandwidth, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine that the escape stair of high-rise buildings has to be designed as a left-handed stair(a stair being designed to turn left whicle we go down the ground floor) judging from fire-safety point of view. Most of Korean people are right-handers. In case of right-handers it was found that the occupant's escape speed using a left-handed stair is more convenient and fast than of a right-handed stair(a stair being designed to turn right while we go down the ground floor). But most of the escape stair of high-rise buildings in Korea was designed as a right-handed stair. The fire code therefore should be provided that the escape stair of high-rise buildings should be a left-handed stair.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a body alignment correction program on asymmetrically developed squash players. Method : 30 experienced squash players who showed asymmetric body development, after evaluation of moire topography contour line shape, were involved in the experiment. All of them were right-handed and had more than five years of experience playing squash. Variables of body composition, moire topography and EMG were statistically compared between pre- and post- application of the 12-week body alignment correction program. The program consisted of 10-minute, left-handed forehand and backhand drive movements and 36 minutes performing 12 different yoga postures. Results : First, the body alignment correction program showed significant effects on the total weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index of the participants. Second, a decrease of right side inclined angles and an increase of left side inclined angles might result in a higher left-right symmetry rate and a better left-right balance; however the data was not statistically significant. Third, the EMG left-right deviation of erector spinae and latissimus decreased and the erector spinae muscle was thought to be more essential for vertebral movement and left-right asymmetry correction. Conclusion : A body alignment correction program, including yoga and opposite side exercises, could reduce left-right asymmetry.

  • In this study, 1,933 Korean male and female subjects ranging in age from 10 to 82 were selected to investigate the various statistics about hand dominance and employment characteristics of preferred hand in handling diverse products and facilities. The statistics show that 5.6% are left-handed and 7.6% are ambidextrous. The average left-hander has a strong tendency to use his or her left hand more often when taking a forceful action than one that requires accuracy. On the contrary, the average ambidextrous or right-handed person generally uses his or her right hand more with action that requires accuracy than force. Derived from such results, the conclusion is that depending on which hand is the dominant one, people seem to use their hands differently when they handle objects and is a point that should be considered in designing hand control devices.

  • Does preferred hand show better performance than non-preferred hand in smart phone text entry using one hand. Is the performance of subjects who use left-preferred hand in smart phone text entry worse than that of others who use right preferred hand among the right handed. This study tried to address these two questions. Thirty young male undergraduate students typed a text using a smart phone which has a touch-based QWERTY keyboard two times with both hands, right and left hand, respectively. The completion time, errors were measured in the text entry tasks. All of participants were right handed, but half of them preferred right hand if they have to use one hand in smart phone text entry and other half preferred left hand. The percentage that preferred hand has better performance than non-preferred hand in smart phone text entry using one hand is less than 90% for right-preferred hand and less than 70% for left-preferred hand. The performance of left hand preferred students is not worse than that of the right hand preferred in one hand text entry of smart phone.

  • This paper proposes a design of attenuator based on meta-material structure and its application. The unit-cell attenuator based on the lossy transmission line consists of the CRLH(Composite Right/Left Handed) transmission line and PIN diodes to be controlled internal loss according to diode bias voltage to change resistance of diode. Also, to reduce the initial losses, there is used parallel connection of PIN diodes. To increase attenuations, it is connected a cascade unit-cell of attenuator with periodic structure. The attenuation quantities of unit-cell are about 10dB and phase variations are 15o maximum at 1.5 GHz ~ 2.5 GHz. Also, its application is represented a vector modulator.

  • A compact and broadband balun is designed using a conventional right-handed transmission line (RHTL) and a left-handed transmission line (LHTL) with lumped elements only. The proposed balun maintains a phase difference of $180^{\circ}{\pm}12^{\circ}$ at the output ports for the frequency range of 1.27 GHz-2.69 GHz. Nevertheless, the circuit size is merely $9.5mm{\times}12.7mm$. To verify the performance of the proposed balun, we attached it to a dipole-type antenna and observed that the return loss is greater than 10 dB for the frequency range between 1.86 GHz and GHz. The radiation pattern and peak gain are similar to those of the dipole antenna with a conventional balun.

  • This paper presents a dual-wideband bandpass filter (BPF) with high band-to-band isolation and skirt selectivity using distributed composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) quad-mode resonators (QMRs). The results of the proposed distributed CRLH TL unit cell analysis are used to establish the scattering parameters and the resonance frequencies of the QMR constituting the dual-wideband BPF. A novel dual-wideband bandpass filter is designed and fabricated, using the derived scattering characteristics. The measured results show that the fabricated dual-wideband bandpass filter has an insertion loss of less than 1.08dB in the lower band, and of 2.01dB in the upper band, a bandwidth of 2.8-5.52GHz and 9.68-12.26GHz, and a band-to-band isolation of more than 38dB, from 6.34-8.42GHz.

  • This paper presents a novel balanced mixer receiver front-end design based on a metamaterial structure applicable to differential-/common-mode excitation. This metamaterial structure functions as a leaky-wave antenna and provides in-trinsic common-mode suppression. Low LO leakage and high RF to LO isolation are achieved without additional filters for LO and RF paths. The metamaterial is based on a unit-cell which under a differential-mode excitation behaves like a composite right/left-handed(CRLH) metamaterial. In contrast, the metamaterial unit-cell is below cut-off under a common-mode excitation. Experimental results are used to verify the proposed metamaterial's differential-/common-mode characteristics. The metamaterial is integrated with a balanced mixer design resulting in an operation frequency range of $1.96{\sim}2.40$ GHz with an optimum mixer conversion loss of 21.1 dB at 2,4 GHz.

  • outphasing class-E power amplifier using composite right/left-handed transmission lines(CRLH-TL) is proposed at 2.4 GHz. The power combiner including CRLH-TL is designed to suppress the second and third harmonics to increase linearity and the output problem of the conventional outphasing amplifier is also solved by the proposed outphasing amplifier. So the P AE is improved. The measured maximum output power at the fundamental frequency shows 31.8 dBm, whereas the PAE shows 50 % with 14 dBm input power excited. The IMD3 is improved by 5 dB compared to that of conventional outphasing amplifier.
