  • By using the method of equivalence of E. Cartan we calculate the local scalar invariants for Riemannian 2-maniolds. We define also a notion of local invariants for submanifolds in $R^{n + d}, n \geq 2, d \geq 1$, in terms of the symmetry of the local isometric embedding equations of Riemannian n-manifolds into $R^{n + d}$. We show that the local invariants obtained by the Cartan's method are the intrinsic expressions of the local invariants in our sense in the casees of surfaces in $R^3$.

  • The authors investigate f-biharmonic maps u : (M, g) ${\rightarrow}$ (N, h) from a Riemannian manifold into a Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature, and derive that if $\int_{M}f^p{\mid}{\tau}(u){\mid}^pdv_g$ < ${\infty}$, $\int_{M}{\mid}{\tau}(u){\mid}^2dv_g$ < ${\infty}$ and $\int_{M}{\mid}du{\mid}^2dv_g$ < ${\infty}$, then u is harmonic. When u is an isometric immersion, the authors also get that if u satisfies some integral conditions, then it is minimal. These results give an affirmative partial answer to conjecture 4 (generalized Chen's conjecture for f-biharmonic submanifolds).

  • It has been shown that the geometric mean A#B of positive definite Hermitian matrices A and B is the maximal element X of Hermitian matrices such that $$\(\array{A&X\\X&B}\)$$ is positive semi-definite. As an extension of this result for the 2 × 2 block matrix, we consider in this article the block matrix [[A#wijB]] whose (i, j) block is given by the Riemannian geodesics of positive definite Hermitian matrices A and B, where wij ∈ ℝ for all 1 ≤ i, j ≤ m. Under certain assumption of the Loewner order for A and B, we establish the equivalent condition for the parameter matrix ω = [wij] such that the block matrix [[A#wijB]] is positive semi-definite.

  • In this paper, we study the geometry of half lightlike submanifolds M of a semi-Riemannian manifold $\tilde{M}$ with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection subject to the conditions; (1) the characteristic vector field of $\tilde{M}$ is tangent to M, the screen distribution on M is totally umbilical in M and the co-screen distribution on M is conformal Killing, or (2) the screen distribution is integrable and the local lightlike second fundamental form of M is parallel.

  • In the present work, we prove the validity of two theorems on null-paths in a version of absolute parallelismgeometry. A version of these theorems has been originally established and proved by Kermak, McCrea and Whittaker (KMW) in the context of Riemannian geometry. The importance of such theorems lies in their applications to derive a general formula for the redshift of spectral lines coming from distant objects. The formula derived in the present work can be applied to both cosmological and astrophysical redshifts. It takes into account the shifts resulting from gravitation, different motions of the source of photons, spin of the moving particle (photons) and the direction of the line of sight. It is shown that this formula cannot be derived in the context of Riemannian geometry, but it can be reduced to a formula given by KMW under certain conditions.

  • In this Paper. a non-linear approach to a design of model reference adaptive control is presented. The approach is demonstrated by a case study of a simple single-pole and no zero, linear, discrete-time plant. The essence of the idea is to generate a full non-linear model of the plant dynamics and the parameter adaptation dynamics as a gradient descent algorithm with respect to a Riemannian metric. It is shown how a Riemannian metric can be chosen so that the modelled plant dynamics do in fact match the true plant dynamics. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared to a traditional model reference adaptive control scheme using the classical sensitivity derivatives (Euclidean gradients) for the descent algorithm.

  • This paper considers foundational issues related to connections in the tangent bundle of a manifold. The approach makes use of second order tangent vectors, i.e., vectors tangent to the tangent bundle. The resulting second order tangent bundle has certain properties, above and beyond those of a typical tangent bundle. In particular, it has a natural secondary vector bundle structure and a canonical involution that interchanges the two structures. The involution provides a nice way to understand the torsion of a connection. The latter parts of the paper deal with the Levi-Civita connection of a Riemannian manifold. The idea is to get at the connection by first finding its.spary. This is a second order vector field that encodes the second order differential equation for geodesics. The paper also develops some machinery involving lifts of vector fields form a manifold to its tangent bundle and uses a variational approach to produce the Riemannian spray.

  • In this paper we introduce new notions of Ricci-like tensor and many kind of curvature-like tensors such that concircular, projective, or conformal curvature-like tensors defined on semi-Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we give some geometric conditions which are equivalent to the Codazzi tensor, the Weyl tensor, or the second Bianchi identity concerned with such kind of curvature-like tensors respectively and also give a generalization of Weyl's Theorem given in [18] and [19].

  • In this paper, we study lightlike submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold admitting a semi-symmetric non-metric connection. We obtain a necessary and a sufficient condition for integrability of the screen distribution. Then we give the conditions under which the Ricci tensor of a lightlike submanifold with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection is symmetric. Finally, we show that the Ricci tensor of a lightlike submanifold of semi-Riemannian space form is not parallel with respect to the semi-symmetric non-metric connection.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study a Kenmotsu manifold which is derived from the almost contact Riemannian manifold with some special conditions. In general, we have some relations about semi-symmetric, Ricci semi-symmetric or Weyl semisymmetric conditions in Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we partially classify the Kenmotsu manifold and consider the manifold admitting a transformation which keeps Riemannian curvature tensor and Ricci tensor invariant.
