To investigate the effects of planting density and nitrogen level on growth and yield potential of newly bred heavy panicle japonica rice with large grain (Iksan 435 and Iksan 438) or many spikelets per panicle(HR14022-21-8-4 and HR14022-21-8-6), four heavy panicle type rices and two many panicle type rices(Dongjinbyeo and Donganbyeo) as the checks were planted under standard planting density (30$\times$15 cm) and dense planting density (15$\times$15 cm) with two nitrogen levels of standard nitrogen level(110 kg h $a^{-1}$) and heavy nitrogen level(165 kg h $a^{-1}$). Effective tiller rate decreased in dense planting or heavy nitrogen, when compared to standard nitrogen and planting, while leaf area index and to dry weight increased in dense planting or heavy nitrogen. Tiller numbers and panicle numbers were more increased by dense planting than heavy nitrogen, whereas spikelet numbers were more increased by heavy nitrogen than dense planting. Ripened grain ratio was slightly lower only in dense planting. 1,000 grain weight in brown rice was not significantly different in dense planting or heavy nitrogen. Milled rice yield was highest in heavy nitrogen with standard planting for heavy panicle type rice, while yield for many panicle type rice was highest in heavy nitrogen with dense planting, suggesting that many panicle type rice possesses higher adapt-ability for dense planting than heavy panicle type rice. Path coefficient analysis revealed that top dry weight, spikelet number and grain weight were the greatest positive contributors to yield, whereas tiller number was negative to yield.d.
A field study was conducted to understand nitrogen use efficiency of high yielding Japonica rice varieties under three levels of nitrogen fertilizer (90, 150 and 210 kg N $ha^{-1}$) in Iksan, Korea. Two high yielding rice varieties, Boramchan and Deuraechan, and an control variety, Dongjin2, were grown in fine silty paddy. Nitrogen use efficiencies (NUE) were 83.3, 56.3, and 41.2 in 90, 150, and 210 kg N $ha^{-1}$ fertilizer level, respectively. Total nitrogen uptake varied significantly among nitrogen levels and varieties. Variety Dongjin2 showed the highest nitrogen uptake efficiency (NUpE), while Boramchan and Deuraechan showed higher nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE). However, Nitrogen harvest index (NHI) was higher in Boramchan (0.58) than Deuraechan (0.57) and Dongjin2 (0.53). Rough rice yield showed linear relationship with total nitrogen uptake ($R^2$=0.72) within the range of nitrogen treatments. Boramchan produced significantly higher rough rice yield (8546 kg $ha^{-1}$) which mainly due to higher number of panicles per $m^2$ compared to Deuraechan (7714 kg $ha^{-1}$). Deuraechan showed higher number of spikelets per panicle, but showed lower yield due to lower number of panicle per $m^2$. Rice varieties showed different nitrogen uptake ability and NUE at different nitrogen level. Plant breeders and agronomist should take advantage of the significant variations and relationships among grain yield, NUpE, and NUE.
In vivo digestibility, nitrogen retention and microbial protein yield from diets of 100% ammonia treated rice straw (ARS) ($D_1$); 65% untreated rice straw (URS)+30% rice bran (RB)+5% SBM ($D_2$) and 85% ARS+15% RB ($D_3$) were determined using three Japanese Corriedale wethers in a $3{\times}3$ Latin Square Design. Results showed that DM consumption and organic matter digestibility were highest in $D_3$; but did not promote high protein digestibility, which RB+SBM had effected in URS based-diet. Dry matter intake and OM digestibility were the same for $D_1$ and $D_3$. Solubility of fiber bonds was increased by ammoniation, resulting in higher NDF digestibility. Nitrogen retention and microbial protein yield of rice bran supplemented groups was higher than ARS, but supplementation did not significantly increase efficiency of microbial protein synthesis from ARS which did occur when RB+SBM was added to untreated straw. The quality of ammoniated rice straw could be improved through RB supplementation because of its positive effects on DM digestibility, nitrogen retention and microbial protein yield. However, the addition of RB+SBM to URS resulted to more efficient N utilization.

In order to evaluate the effect of nitrogen application levels on yield and protein content of rice varieties, a field experiment was conducted at National Institute of Crop Science of Korea in 2020. Five levels(0, 3, 5, 7, and 9 kg·10a-1) of nitrogen fertilizer were treated to six Korean rice varieties. The nitrogen uptake amount, soil nitrogen content before and after rice cultivation, milled rice yield, and protein content in head rice were analyzed. As the treatment of nitrogen fertilizer increased, the nitrogen uptake amount of plants increased significantly. However, changes in nitrogen content in the soil before and after rice cultivation were different for each cultivar. The amount of nitrogen change in the soil decreased as the amount of nitrogen application increased in the three cultivars of Haepum, Gopum, and Odae, and the other three cultivars showed the opposite trend. As a result of correlation analysis of nitrogen application amount, nitrogen uptake amount, milled rice yield, and protein content of head rice, the five varieties except for Haepum showed a high correlation between these factors. The amount of nitrogen application and nitrogen uptake of plant showed a positive correlation about the milled rice yield and protein content of head rice. In particular, the protein content in head rice appeared to be more affected by nitrogen uptake amount than nitrogen application amount. As a result of this study, the yield and protein content of rice had positive correlations with the level of nitrogen fertilizer, and had a high correlation with the nitrogen absorption of plants.
This study was carried out to determine the effects on rice growth, yields and soil improvement under the different nitrogen levels in machine-transplanted rice after plowing at the fruiting stage of milk vetch. The fresh weight of milk vetch at plowing time was 20.95 ton/ha. In dry weight, T-N and C/N were 1.58%, 21.8%, respectively. Organic matter, total nitrogen and exchangeable calcium of soil after the experiment in the plot of milk vetch were higher than those before the experiment. Leaf area and dry weight of rice plants at heading date increased as nitrogen level increased. The number of panicle and spikelets per $\textrm{m}^2$were not different except for the 110 kg/ha nitrogen level plot with milk vetch. Brown rice yield ranged from 5.45 to 6.08 ton/ha, in creasing with increased nitrogen level. So the yield increased by 1% at 77 kg/ha nitrogen level, 7% at 110 kg/ha nitrogen level plot with milk vetch compared with conventional level (rice straw 5.4 ton/ha and nitrogen 110 kg/ha).
This study was carried out to determine the response of the rice yield and grain quality by rice leaf folder (RLF, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis G.) and identify the damages caused by different transplanting dates, nitrogen amounts and chlorophyll amounts (SPAD value) of rice leaf. As the damage degree of RLF was getting severer, the ripened grain rate and 1000-grain weight were decreased and due to the increasing of chalky rice rate the rate of head rice was reduced. Therefore, the yield of head rice was decreased by 36% in heavily damaged rice plant. Among the physicochemical characteristics, protein content of rice grain was increased but amylose content was reduced, consequently, the palatability was deteriorated in heavily damaged rice by RLF. The degree of damage of RLF was getting serious as transplanting date was delayed and as the amount of nitrogen was increased. In the relationship between the SPAD value and the damage degree of RLF, as the SPAD value was increased by nitrogen fertilizing, the damage degree was also increased exponential functionally.

N fertilizer required by rice could be reduced greatly in the rice-barley double cropping system than in the rice single cropping system. This study was conducted to investigate how much of the N fertilizer during the early stage of rice in the rice-barley double cropping system, could be saved compared to that in the rice single cropping system. This experiment was carried out at the paddy field of the National Crop Experiment Station in Suwon, Korea during three years from 1999 to 2001. Amounts of soil mineral nitrogen (SMN) and SPAD values of rice leaf during rice growing season in the rice-barley double cropping system were higher than those in the rice single cropping system under the same amount of N application during two years. Yield and N uptakes of rice at harvesting time were also higher in the rice-barley double cropping system than in the rice single cropping system during two years. Yield and N uptake of rice in the rice single cropping system were decreased when basal N fertilizer was omitted, but those reductions were not found by either omitting basal N fertilizer or omitting N fertilizer at tillering stage in the rice-barley double cropping system during 2000 and 2001. But yield and N uptakes of rice were decreased by 70 kg/10a and 2kgN/10a by the omission of both N application at basal and tillering stages in the rice-barley double cropping system in 2002. It was concluded that N fertilizer as much as tillering N fertilizer could be saved in the rice-barley double cropping system.
To search for the optimal nitrogen application method for the machine transplanting to Dongjinbyeo, compared to conventional method, in the various methods of nitrogen split application at different growth stages of rice plant. This experiment was performed at Honam Crop Experiment Station, in 1985 year. The results were as followed; the nitrogen contents of leaf blade was the highest at maximum tillering stage under the conventional method and reduction division stage under the nitrogen top-dressing at panicle initiation and 5 times split application of nitrogen for the whole rice growth stages. CGR, RGR and NAR after heading was highest under 5 times split application of nitrogen for the whole rice growth stages. Relationships between CGR and NAR, NAR and RGR, CGR and RGR showed the positive correlation significantly at each rice growth stage, respectively, and showed more high correlation according to further rice growth stages. The degree of contribution of CGR to rice grain yield was the highest at 20 days after heading. Rice grail: yield was higher under top-dressing of nitrogen at panicle initiation and basal application (30%) + 4 times equal dispensing top-dressing after basal application of nitrogen than conventional method.
This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics and yield of whole green rice grains during the ripening period. These were investigated using Hopumbyeo and Unkwangbyeo at two transplanting times and with two kinds of nitrogen fertilization. The transplanting times were May 30 and June 20, respectively, using 30-day seedling culture and transplanting conducted with 3 - 4 plants per hill in planting space of $15cm{\times}30cm$. During nitrogen fertilization, 9 kg and 18 kg was used, respectively. The harvest of the green whole rice grains was carried out on the 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th, and 40th day after the heading date. The clum length was greater with later planting and with application of more nitrogen. The rice yield was higher with nitrogen fertilization of 18 kg/10 a when transplanted on May 30 for Hupumbyeo, and for Unkwangbyeo, was higher at 9 kg/10 a nitrogen fertilization when transplanted on May 30. The protein content of Hopumbyeo was higher when the nitrogen fertilizer was 18 kg/10 a, and that of Unkwangbyeo was lower than that when transplanting on June 20. The greenness was not related to the nitrogen fertilization level when transplanted on May 20 but for later transplanting, the greenness was higher when the nitrogen application was increased, and the greenness was the greatest about 30 days after the heading date.
Response of grain yield and milled-rice protein content to nitrogen topdress (N) timing at panicle initiation stage (PIS) is critical for quantifying real-time N requirement for target grain yield and milled-rice protein content. Two split-split-plot experiments with three replications, one in 2004 and the other in 2005, were conducted in Experimental Farm, Seoul National University, Suwon, Korea. The experiments included three N rates at tillering stage (TS), three N timing treatments at panicle initiation stage (PIS) and two rice cultivars. The N rates at TS, N timing at PIS, and rice cultivars were randomly assigned to main plot, sub plot, and sub-sub plot, respectively. Results showed that the delayed N application at PIS reduced grain yield in 2004 and increased milled-rice protein content in both years significantly at 0.05 probability level. The calculated optimum N timing at PIS from pooled data by N rates and rice cultivars in two years was at 28 days before heading (DBH). However, real-time of N timing at PIS was dependent on plant growth and N status around PIS that in turn was dependent on applied N rates at TS. The optimum N timing at PIS was at 30 DBH for no N treatments at TS while at 27 DBH for 3.6 and 7.2 kg N/10a treatments and at 27 and 29 DBH for Hwaseongbyeo and Daeanbyeo, respectively. In general, earlier applied N at PIS resulted in lower milled-rice protein content but the highest grain yield was expected to be obtained when N topdress at PIS was applied at the time when shoot N concentration started to drop below about 23 mg/g due to dilution effect after transplanting. In conclusion, the results of our experiments imply that the currently recommended N topdress time (24DBH) at PIS in Korea should be reconsidered for the higher grain yield and the better quality of rice.
