Investigated was the ground-walking Coleoptera at the moor and adjacent forest at 800 m and rice paddies at lower level of 50 m in altitude. There were 5 species belonging to 5 genera and 2 families, 4 species belonging to 4 genera and 3 families, and 17 species belonging to 11 genera and 2 families respectively. Diplous depressus (Gebler) was the dominant species at the moor and forest in distinctive numbers, while Pheropsophus javanus (Dejean) was the one at the paddies. Three investigated sites supported independently their ground-walking Coleoptera groups. The moor group seemed to fail in establishing the resident Coleoptera community. The fact may imply to be related a kind of the pioneer species in early dry succession that D. depressus was found in a considerable range between forest and moor. The Coleoptera groups of moor and forest was different from that of paddies in species structure.
The smaller brown planthopper overwinters mostly as the fourth instar nymph. The emerged adult disperses to winter barley or wheat plants. The adult of the first generation disperses into the rice field, and spends three generations in the rice field. The population densities of the adults of the first generation and the overall density of the second generations are the most important in relation to the incidents of the rice stripe disease which is transmitted by this insects. This study was intended to analyse the population increases in these important generations in relation to the kind and the different growing stage of the host plants. The insects were reared on potted host plants of different growing stage in the insect cages. The population increases of the insects in the cages were compared with those on the rice seedlings in the laboratory. The results are as follows: 1. The average longevities of the adults of the generations were 13.4 days for the overwintered, 12.9 days for the first, and 10.2 days for the second generation, and showed no significant differences between the generations even they seemed to be shorter than normal condition probably caused by the frequent disturbance at the time of food renewal in 2 or 3 days. 2. When they were reared on the rice seedling, the average numbers of the eggs per female were 131.2 for the overwintered generation, 124.9 for the first generation grown on the barley, and 142.3 for the second generation grown on rice, and shelved no significant differences between the generations. More than $90\%$ of the eggs were laid within 3 weeks. 3. The hatchabilities of the eggs laid on the rice seedling in laboratory were $77.4\%$ for the first generation, $93.1\%$ for the second generation and $62.1\%$ for the third generation. The estimated hatchabilities of the eggs were $67.5\%$ for the first generation, $84.1\%$for the second generation, and $21.9\%$ for the third generation with the growing plants on the plots. The hatchability on the eggs laid by the adults infested on the barley on May 17 was $13.5\%$ compared with $67.5\%$ for the eggs laid by those infested on barley in late April. 4. The average total nymphal periods were 19.4 days for the first generation, and 13.3 days for the second generation in the laboratory and the mortalities of the nymphs seemed to related with the growing stages of the host plants. 5. With the pot experiments, the average per cents of the emerged adults were $37.2\%$ for the first generation, $55.3\%$ for the second generation, and $11.6\%$, for the third generation. The average numbers of the emerged adults were $7.4\%$ for the pots infested on the barley on May 17, instead of $37.2\%$ adults for those infested in late April. 6. From above results, it may suggest that the innate qualities of the insect are not significantly different between generations, and the differences in the increase of the population for the generations might effected considerably by the differences in the physiological conditions of tile host plant, besides the differences in physical and other biological factors.
Riptortus clavatus, one of the many insects in major crops, damages pods and seeds, which reduces seed vigor and viability in soybeans. This study was conducted to examine the effect of diversely damaged seeds by R. clavatus on seed germination and seedling emergence and to determine the association of damaged seed with quality and yield of soybean sprouts. All seeds damaged by R. clavatus significantly (P<0.05) reduced seed vigor as measured by the rates of seed germination, germination speed, and seedling emergence. Mean seed germination rate of non-damaged seeds in sprout-soybean varieties was 97.8%, whereas the rates of seeds damaged at different levels, 31-50% and 51-80%, were 23.0 and 5.4%, respectively. The rates of seedling rot and abnormal, incomplete germination significantly (P<0.05) increased as the amount of seeds damaged by R. clavatus increased to 5, 10 and 15% against the total seeds for sprout production. Yield of soybean sprouts from seeds damaged at different levels decreased up to 13% as compared to that in normal seeds. In customer preferences on soybean sprout produce, 84% of customers participated in survey preferred to purchase sprouts from seeds with 5% of damaged seeds, but sprouts produced from seeds with 15% of damaged seeds were intended to purchase only by 22% of the customers. Areas of the seed damaged by R. clavatus were readily infected by pathogens as the seed germinated, resulted in deteriorated quality and reduced yield of sprout produce.
Methods for harvesting and storage of rice were also originally introduced from the ancient China like other practices of agricultural techniques. Thus, optimum time or rice harvesting was adopted by appropriate draining to prevent the losses, and efficient tools were utilized for harvesting and manufacturing. In addition, our unique and original techniques for rice storage were learned and handed down, which prevented winds and rains, and allowed good ventilation. In the 15th and 16th centuries, treatment of smartweed extracts as emphasized to prevent insect damage for stored barley and rice cutting immediately at harvest was encouraged to prevent shattering of rice grains. In the 18th and 19th centuries, means for prevention of damages by water, insects and rats when grains stored in the field were suggested. Also, studies for ecology of various rice cultivars and storage techniques for a long period of time were necessarily emphasized to assume the optimum time of harvest regionally and to cooperatively work timely.

Many insects have gained increasing attention as an alternative protein for humans. Among those, the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), was recently approved as a general food ingredient by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. For industrial utilization of G. bimaculatus, mass rearing techniques and production system should be standardized first. In this study, we investigated the effects of five different feeds on the growth and development of G. bimaculatus. Feed is the one of the key factors that has considerable effects on rearing insects. With five different kinds of feed on $1^{st}$, $3^{rd}$, and $5^{th}$ instar nymphs, the change of survival rate, body weight were monitored up to eight wk after hatching. We concluded that 50% of soybean flour, 20% of corn powder, 10% of rice bran, 9% of milk serum, 10% of rice flour, 0.5% of microorganisms, and 0.5% of multivitamins and minerals (diet C) was the best mix for promoting growth and development of $3^{rd}$ instar nymphs compared to the control diet.
It has been documented that the resistance to planthoppers is attributed to the feeding preference of the insects. This might be related to difference in the amount of feeding plant sap between resistant and susceptible hosts. In this aspect, this study was conducted to verify it and to develop an effective screening method for resistance to planthoppers by tracer technique. An effective P-32 labelling of rice seedlings at $2\~3$ leaf stage was dipping the roots in concentration of $0.1{\mu}Ci/ml$ solution for 48 hours. Radioactivity was significantly higher in planthopers fed on susceptible variety for 48 hours as compared to those fed on resistant variety. Radioactivity of adults was higher than that of nymphs and also higher in female than male. The results were highly correlated to that indicated by the feeding preference of the insects and therefore, considered to be valid for a screening technique.
This experiment was conducted to determine the optimum temperature and day-length condition for laboratory multiplication of Green Rice Leafhopper, Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, and to obtain basic information for deriving temperature dependent growth rate function. The insects which were reared in $33-35^{\circ}C$ have relatively short nymphal periods and high adult emergence rate compared with the insects which were reared in $27-29^{\circ}C$ The adults which emerged in $35^{\circ}C$ laid significantly smaller number of eggs than the adult reared in $27-29^{\circ}C$ during their nymphal stage. Day length in $29^{\circ}C$ did not have any influence to the nymphal growth, adult emergence rate and egg laying of the insect. The growth rate of the insect did not have linear relation with rearing temperature.
This paper studied production characteristics of organic farming products and analyzed management income and production cost of organic farming(rice). In order to analyze these points actually, this study was focused on pruduction activities of a producers' organization, Pulmoo Cooperatives in Hong-Dong Myun, Hong-Seong Region, Chung Nam Province. So the following results were obtained : In 1994, output level and an income rate of rice per unit area(10a) which was produced in organic farming method(O.F.M) was higher than those of general farming method(G.F.M) as about 5%, 7.4%. And management income size of the former was 1.8 times as large as that of the latter. But rice production cost of O.F.M was 1.93 times as much as that of G.F.M, particularily in labor cost and farming equipment cost, light and heat expenses, many other material costs. For the progress of organic farming O.F.M and equipmets should be developed much more, for example, the technics of prevetion against damages by blight and harmful insects and improvement of varieties, natural pesticides, agricultual application of microorganisim, construction of compost heat factory, etc. Since these technics and establishments have taken on the public goods, the development of those should be supported by government.

Greenhouse gas emissions are one of the critical factors that drive change in rice cropping systems. Within this changing system, less water irrigation and chemical fertilizer are seriously considered, as well combining precision farming technologies with irrigation control. Water and phosphorus (P) fertilizer are two of the most critical inputs in rice cultivation. Due to the lack of water availability in the system, P fertilizer is not available, especially in acidic soil conditions. Moreover, the various types of abiotic stresses, such as drought, high temperature, salinity, submergence, and limited fertilizer result in significant yield loss in the system. Even in the late stage of growth, the waves caused by diseases and insects make the field more unfruitful. Therefore, agronomists and breeders need to identify the secondary phenotypes to estimate the yield loss of when stress appears. The prediction will be clearer if we have a set of markers tagging the causal variation and the associated precise phenotype indices. Although there have been various studies for abiotic stress tolerance, we still lack functional molecular markers and phenotype indices. This is due to the underlying challenges caused by environmental factors in highly unpredictable regional and yearly environmental conditions in the field system. Pupl (phosphorus uptake 1) is still known as the first QTL associated with phosphorus uptake and have been validated in different field crops. Interestingly, some pyramiding lines of Pupl and other QTLs for other stress tolerances showed preferable phenotypes in the yield. Precise physiological studies with the help of genomics are on-going and some results will be discussed.
The variations of antibiosis to whitebacked planthopper (Sogatella furcifera Horvath) in resistant varieties, N 22 (Wbph 1) and ARC 10239 (Wbph 2) was investigated at different seedling ages and different tillers within a plant. The antibiosis of the rice plants to the insect was measured as the nymphal survival rate on the rice plants. The survival rate of the WBPH on N 22 was greater than on ARC 10239. It was also different at different seedling ages and the tillers within a plant with different tendency of two resistant rice genotypes, N 22 and ARC 10239. NO significant differences of nymphal survival rate was found between 7 and 30 days old seedlings on N 22, and greatly reduced on the 60 days old seedling. On the other hand it was increased up to on 30 days old seedlings and gradually decreased from on 40 days old seedlings of ARC 10239. The nymphal survival rate was greater in tillers than in the main culm of the rice plants.
