  • For the design of landscape, quantitative research is very important data for the designer. In this regard, this study analyzed the rhythm of the wall of Oksan Seowon, which horizontally ascends the slope, as the principles of design. This resulted in the deduction of the numerical proportion and progression, which became design motifs and proposed a design method, which can be applied in landscape rhythm design. The Oksan Seowon is a very valuable cultural heritage, where a very meticulous design principles were found as a result of the analysis of the slope rhythm, for which the proportion and scale were employed. A principle of proportion was found, where an asymmetric balance was formed by weighting the lower part of the slope, in accordance with the degree of the slope. Also, The scale of the height of the wall was based on the human scale. The aesthetic rhythmic design progression was derived from the area and the horizontal line rhythm of the walls. Also, They found out the Fibonacci series and golden ratio. The fact that cultural heritage was analyzed of aesthetic design principles by the very systematic quantitative method is of great significance. Moreover, derived motifs proposed examples of an application of analyzed rhythm progression to the landscape rhythm design. This research will be able to function as the frame and data for the design method of the landscape rhythm.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a mobile application 'Beat Processing Device (BPD)' to record and quantify the data for the performance accuracy of rhythm production. BPD has been developed in three phases. First, we reviewed studies that used rhythm as main intervention strategy to improve cognitive functioning of older adults, and derived four basic rhythm idioms. Second, we developed an iOS-based mobile application, optimized the device, the instrument tone, and the measurement variables through preliminary test. Lastly, we tested the mobile application by comparing the performance data obtained from MIDI and BPD from 60 older adults. The device was shown to be reliable and consistent with other mode of measurement and analysis. Conclusively, BPD can be a useful tool for assessing rhythm production ability in the course of cognitive skills training.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine how Korean speakers realize English stress and rhythm at the sentence level, and investigate what different acoustic characteristics of English sentence stress and rhythm Korean speakers have, compared with those of American English speakers. Stressed words in the sentence were analyzed in terms of duration, fundamental frequency, and intensity of the stressed vowel in the word with neutral stress and with emphatic stress, respectively. According to the results, when the words had emphatic stress, both Koreans' and Americans' F0 and intensity of the stressed vowel were higher than those with neutral stress. Korean speakers of English realized the sentence stress with shorter vowel duration and higher F0 than American English speakers when the words had emphatic stress. The analysis of the timing of the sentence with increased unstressed syllables showed that both Americans and Koreans produced the sentence with longer duration as the number of unstressed syllables increased. However, the duration of unstressed syllables between stressed syllables by Koreans was longer than that by Americans. Americans seemed to produce unstressed syllables between stressed syllables faster than Koreans for regular intervals of stressed syllables. This analysis implies that if there are more unstressed syllables between stressed syllables, Koreans might produce unstressed syllables and the whole sentence with longer duration.

  • This study investigates the effect of Japanese (L1) on the production of the Korean rhythmic structure. Korean and Japanese have typologically different rhythmic structure as a syllable-timed language and mora-timed language, respectively. This rhythmic difference comes from the different phonological properties of the two languages. Due to this difference, Japanese speakers that are learning Korean may produce a different rhythm than native Korean speakers' rhythm. To investigate the influence of the native language's rhythm on the target language, we conducted an acoustic analysis using acoustic metrics such as %V, VarcoV, and VarcoS. Four Korean native speakers and ten advanced Japanese Korean learners participated in a production test. The analyzed material consisted of six Korean sentences that contained various syllable structures. The results showed that KS and JS's rhythms are different in %V as well as in VarcoV. In the case of VarcoS, significant rhythmic difference was observed in the VC and CVC syllable, in which the coda segment is nasal sound. This study allowed us to observe the influence of L1 on production of L2 rhythm.

  • This study examined the correlation between the rhythm reproduction performance and cognitive function of school-aged children. A total of 59 third grade elementary students participated in this study. An iPad-based rhythm reproduction task, the Digit Span Test (DST), the Children's Color Trails Test (CCTT), and a self-paced tapping task via a MIDI keyboard were conducted for each participant. The results demonstrated that scores at each stage of the iPad-based rhythm reproduction test showed different patterns of correlation with cognitive function test scores. This result suggests that accuracy of a simple rhythm task is correlated to speed of self-paced tapping (second). Also cognitive function may affect rhythm grouping ability. Results of this analysis for each of 20 rhythm items showed that there was a common rhythm characteristics that correlated with executive function, working memory or self-paced tapping speed. These results indicate that rhythm ability is related to, and predictive of, the level of cognitive functioning in elementary school students and can be used as an useful parameter when examining cognitive function of school-aged children in multifaceted dimensions.

  • Premature ventricular contractions are the most common of all arrhythmias and may cause more serious situation in some patients. Therefore, the detection of this arrhythmia becomes crucial in the early diagnosis and prevention of possible life threatening cardiac diseases. Most of the algorithms detecting PVC reported in literature is not always feasible due to the presence of noise and P wave making the detection difficult, and the process being time consuming and ineffective for real time analysis. To solve this problem, a new approach for the detection of PVC is presented based rhythm analysis and beat matching in this paper. For this purpose, the ECG signals are first processed by the usual preprocessing method and R wave was detected. The algorithm that decides beat type using the rhythm analysis of RR interval and beat matching of QRS width is developed. The performance of R wave and PVC detection is evaluated by using MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The achieved scores indicate sensitivity of 99.74%, positive predictivity of 99.81% and sensitivity of 93.91%, positive predictivity of 96.48% accuracy respectively for R wave and PVC detection.

  • Atrial fibrillation is commonly associated with organic mitral valve disease including rheumatic valvular heart diasease or mitral valve prolapse and so forth. Although spontaneous sinus reversion may occur in some patients after mitral valve operation, recurrence of atrial fibrillation is the rule in most of these patients. We have tried to maintain sinus rhythm after mital valve operation with oral quinidine therapy, and we will show the efficacy of this therapy in this report. From January 1986 to August 1992, 60 patients of mitral valvular heart disease, who had had atrial fibrillation preoperatively and gained sinus rhythm postoperatively, were selected for this study. These patients were divided into 2 groups: Control group [n=30] and Quinidine trial group [n=30]. The age, sex, duration of symptoms, left atrial size and other risk factors of the reversion to atrial fibrillation were adjusted to be similar between the two groups. The maintenance rate of sinus rhythm was calculated by Kaplan-Meier method, and the rate was significantly higher in quinidine trial group than in control group [ p=0.0001 ]. Univariate analysis was performed on the risk factors of reversion to atrial fibrillation, and the difference of maintenance rate between the two groups were corrected with this result: the difference was still statistically significant [ p=0.0205 ]. The quinidine levels were measured in postoperative days, and there were no difference of serum quinidine level between the quinidine success group and quinidine failure group. In conslusion, oral quinidine therapy was effective for the maintenance of sinus rhythm after mitral valve operation compared to control group, and there was no correlation between the serum quinidine level and clinical efficacy of quinidine therpy.
