Case Report of Sjögren’s Syndrome Treated with Traditional Korean Medicine (쇼그렌증후군의 한방치료 1례)

  • Objective: This case report examines the effects of Jaeumganghwa-tang as a treatment option for Sjögren’s syndrome.Methods: We provided the patient with Jaeumganghwa-tang twice a day, as well as acupuncture and bee venom therapy (both twice a week), for 30 days. Symptoms were charted and evaluated using the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Sjögren’s Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI).Results: The patient’s ESSPRI score decreased from 8 to 6 after the 30-day treatment.Conclusions: Jaeumganghwa-tang may be helpful in alleviating Sjögren’s syndrome.

  • Enzymes involved in catecholamine synthesis are present in the highest concentration in the adrenal medulla, however they were found also in other, mainly nervous tissues. Increased transcription of genes for catecholamine biosynthetic enzymes is an important mechanism to increase the capacity for epineprine/norepinephrine biosynthesis with stress. Gastrodia elata(Chinese name: Tienma), are very important Chinese herbal medicines used for the medical treatment of headaches, migraine, dizziness, epilepsy, rheumatism, neuralgia, paralysis and other neuralgic and nervous disorders. Immobilize stressed rat markedly increased tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNA and dopamine-$\beta$-hydroxylase (DBH) mRNA transcription level more than control group. But treated Gastrodia elata extracts in immobilized stressed rat slightly increased TH mRNA and DBH mRNA transcription level more than normal group. In addition, we are obtained identical results in PC12 cell line. Decrease of transcription level of TH mRNA and DBH mRNA is indicating that Gastrodia elata have a anti-stress effects which decrease the transcription level of TH and DBH mRNA on catecholamine biosynthesis pathway.

  • Centella asiatica (Linn.) Urban (Umbelliferae) which is also known as 'pegaga' is highly consumed and eaten raw as 'ulam' in Malaysia. C. asiatica is used in traditional medicines to treat various health conditions such as rheumatism, inflammation, syphilis, skin diseases and diarrhoea. Various reports exhibited that the crude extracts and isolated bioactive compounds of C. asiatica possessed a broad range of pharmacological activities such as anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-tumor, wound healing, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective and memory enhancing properties. The pharmacological validation on anti-microbial and immunomodulatory of C. asiatica is very limited and several existence review papers related for this plant had not been focused for both activities. This review therefore attempts to combine the existing literature to offer immense scope for researchers engaged in validation of the traditional claims and bioactivities of this plant related with anti-microbial and immunomodulatory potential.

  • Gastrodia elata Blume belongs to Orchidaceae, its steamed and dried rhizomes are very important herbal medicines used for the medical treatment of headaches. migraine. dizziness, epilepsy, rheumatism. neuralgia. paralysis and other neuralgic and nervous disorders. Although phytochemical studies of the rhizome have revealed the presence of several phenolic compounds. in which a phenolic glycoside. gastrodin (C13H18O7). is a major consituent, so far, there is no report on the studies of its aerial part.   • Artemisia Folium is a preparation of dried leaves from Artemisia species and has been used traditionally to prevent or treat various kinds of woman's diseases. A similar preparation called Chinese Moxa has been used to treat rheumatism by moxibustion in Chinese medicine. A small carbohydrate fraction of approximately 1,000 dlaton from the water-soluble extract of the Artemisia Folium promoted survival of the mouse thymocytes in culture. A mouse gene array study suggested that the fraction might modulate Fas/FasL dependent apoptotic cell death and thus had influence on the survival of the thymocytes in culture. (omitted)

  • Luotonin A was isolated from Peganum nigellastrum Bunge (Zygophyllaceae) which was named Luo-Tuo-Hao in China and used as a Chinese traditional medicine for the treatment of rheumatism, abscess, and inflammation. The basic fractions of P. nigellastrum showed antitumor activtity, and the origin of such an activity was recently revealed by identifying its constituent luotonin A which inhibited the growth of leukemia P-388 cells ($IC_50$ = 1.8 $\mu$g/mL). Such an intriguing properties of luotonin A led developments of efficient methods for total synthesis. (omitted)

  • Leonotis nepetifolia (L.) R. Br, commonly called dagga, klip dagga, or lion's ear, has been used to effectively treat various diseases and other health problems for a long time because of its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and analgesic activities. Several studies have attributed these biological activities to L. nepetifolia's constituent secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, glycosides, coumarins, anthocyanins, and saponins. This review aims to examine the evidence-based ethnopharmacological uses of L. nepetifolia in the treatment of bronchial asthma, diarrhea, skin diseases, malaria, burns, cancer, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatism. However, although L. nepetifolia has great potential to treat these diseases, further isolation and identification of its therapeutic phytochemical constituents are required. In addition, the performance of its extracts and phytochemicals should be thoroughly tested in preclinical and clinical trials in order to ascertain their safety and efficacy, which will prove valuable in developing new medicines.
