  • Oil and gas industry pumps viscous fluids and investigation of flow physics is important to understand the machine behavior to deliver such fluids. 3D numerical flow simulation and analysis for different viscous fluids at different rotational speeds of a centrifugal impeller have been reported in this paper. Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations were solved and the performance analysis was made. Standard two equation k-${\varepsilon}$ model was used for the turbulence closure of steady incompressible flow. An inlet recirculation and reverse flow in impeller passage was observed at low impeller speeds. It was also found that the higher viscosity fluids have higher recirculation which hinders the impeller performance.

  • Recent development of high speed computers and use of optimization techniques have given a big momentum of turbomachinery design replacing expensive experimental cost as well as trial and error approaches. The surrogate based optimization techniques being used for aerodynamic turbomachinery designs coupled with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations analysis involve single- and multi-objective optimization methods. The objectives commonly tried to improve were adiabatic efficiency, pressure ratio, weight etc. Presently coupling the fluid flow and structural analysis is being tried to find better design in terms of weight, flutter and vibration, and turbine life. The present article reviews the surrogate based optimization techniques used recently in turbomachinery shape optimizations.

  • In this paper, numerical study on a mixed-flow pump for irrigation and drainage has been performed based on three-dimensional viscous flow analysis. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by finite volume approximations and solved by the commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX-11.0. A structured grid system is constructed in the computational domain, which has O-type grids near the blade surfaces and H/J-type grids in other regions. The numerical results were validated with experimental data for the heads and efficiencies at different flow coefficients. The efficiency at the design flow coefficient is evaluated with the variation of two geometric variables related to area of discharge and length of the vane in the diffuser. The results show that efficiency of the mixed-flow pump at the design flow coefficient is improved by the modifications of the geometry.

  • This paper provides the numerical results of a simulation of the flow around a propeller working beneath the free surface. A finite volume method is used to solve the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations, where the wave-making problem is solved using a volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. The numerical analysis focuses on the propeller wake structure affected by the free surface, where we consider another free surface boundary condition that treats the free surface as a rigid wall surface. The propeller wake under the effect of these two free surface conditions shows a reduction in the magnitude of the longitudinal and vertical flow velocities, and its vortical structures strongly interact with the free surface. The thrust and torque coefficient under the free surface effect decrease about 3.7% and 3.1%, respectively. Finally, the present numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data.

  • A numerical simulation method has been under development for solving turbulent flows around a ship model in maneuvering motion using the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The method used second-order finite differences, collocated grids, pressure-Poisson equation and four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme as key components of the solution method. A modified Baldwin-Lomax model is used for the turbulence closure. This paper presents a preliminary result of the computational study on turbulent flows past a ship model in drift motion. Calculations are carried out for a Series 60 $C_B=0.6$ ship model, for which detailed experimental data are available. The results of the present calculations are compared with the experimental data for hydrodynamic forces acting on the model as well as velocity distributions at longitudinal sections. Only fair agreements has been achieved. The computational results show the complex asymmetrical shear flow patterns including three-dimensional separations followed by formation of bilge vortices both in bow and stern regions.

  • Unsteady sheet cavitation on a three-dimensional twisted hydrofoil was studied using an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver based on a cell-centered finite volume method. As a verification test of the computational method, non-cavitating and cavitating flows over a modified NACA66 foil section were simulated and validated against existing experimental data. The numerical uncertainties of forces and pressure were evaluated for three levels of mesh resolution. The computed pressure on the foil and the cavity shedding behavior were validated by comparing with existing experimental data. The cavity shedding dynamics by re-entrant jets from the end and sides of the cavity were investigated.

  • This paper presents a three dimensional shape optimization procedure for a low-speed axial flow fan blade with a weighted average surrogate model. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by finite volume approximations. Six variables from airfoil profile and lean are selected as design variables. 3D RANS solver is used to evaluate the objective functions of total pressure efficiency. Surrogate approximation models for optimization have been employed to find the optimal design of fan blade. A search algorithm is used to find the optimal design in the design space from the constructed surrogate models for the objective function. The total pressure efficiency is increased by 0.31% with the weighted average surrogate model.

  • There are many difficulties in realizing Ultra-micro gas turbine system. Among them, the effects of tip clearance upon the micro turbine flowfield are discussed in this paper. The flowfield was investigated numerically with the Reynolds-averaged three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations. Calculations were conducted with clearance height from 0% to 10% of the passage height. Leakage mass flow and deterioration of efficiency are proportional to the clearance height for the clearance height larger than 4%. However, in the case of 2% clearance, leakage flow is significantly reduced due to relative motion of the casing and as a result deterioration of efficiency is very small. It is difficult to control tip clearance in micro turbines, but the results of this study indicate that if the clearance height is controlled within a few per-cent of passage height, deterioration of stage performance will be small.

  • The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for turbulent flow around a two-dimensional foil section moving ova. a flat surface (roller plate) is solved. The numerical method utilized the finite-difference schemes in collocated grids and the Baldwin-Lomax model is employed for turbulence closure. Calculations are carried out for three foil sections of different mean-line shape with various height ratio. As a foil approaches the bottom surface, the lift is augmented, while there exist some differences in pitching moment due to mean-line shape. It was found that the S-shaped mean line deteriorates lift characteristics but increases pitching moment to restore the designed height.
