Turbulent flow structure in the high amplitude meandering channel is complex due to secondary recirculation with helicoidal motions and shear layers formed by flow separation from the curved sidewall. In this work, the secondary flow and the superelevation of the water surface produced in the high-amplitude Kinoshita channel are reproduced by the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations using the VOF technique for resolving the variation of water surface elevation and three statistical turbulence models ($k-{\varepsilon}$, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, $k-{\omega}$ SST). The numerical results computed by a second-order accurate finite volume method are compared with an existing experimental measurement. Among applied turbulence models, $k-{\omega}$ SST model relatively well predicts overall distribution of the secondary recirculation in the Kinoshita channel, while all three models yield similar prediction of water superelevation transverse slope. The secondary recirculation driven by the radial acceleration in the upstream bend affects the flow structure in the downstream bend, which yields a pair of counter-rotating vortices at the bend apex. This complex flow pattern is reasonably well reproduced by the $k-{\omega}$ SST model. Both $k-{\varepsilon}$ based models fail to predict the clockwise-rotating vortex between a pair of counter-rotating vortices which was observed in the experiment. Regardless of applied turbulence models, the present computations using the VOF method appear to well reproduce the superelevation of water surface through the meandering channel.

The main aim of this study is to investigate the effect of berm breakwater on wave run-up. A total of 200 numerical analysis tests have been carried out in this paper to investigate the effect of berm width, wave height, and wave period on the wave run-up, using an integrating technique of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Direct application of Navier Stokes equations within the berm width has been used to provide a more reliable approach for studying the wave run-up over berm breakwaters. A well tested Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) scheme was adopted for numerical computations. The computational results were compared with theoretical data to validate the model outputs. Numerical results showed that the simulation method can provide accurate estimations for wave run-up over berm breakwaters. It was found that the wave run-up may be decreased by increasing the berm width up to about 36 percent. Furthermore, the wave run-up may increase by increasing the wave height and wave period up to about 53 and 36 percent, respectively. These results may convince the engineers to use this model for design of berm breakwater in actual scale by calculating the Reynolds numbers.
Recently, a lot of studies have been made about the methods used to generate turbulent velocity fields stochastically in order to effectively predict broadband flow noise. Among them, the FRPM (Fast Random Particle Mesh) method which generates turbulence with specific statistical properties using turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation obtained from the steady solution of the RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations has been successfully applied. However, the FRPM method cannot be applied to the flow noise problems involving intrinsic unsteady characteristics such as centrifugal fan. In this paper, to effectively predict the broadband noise generated by centrifugal fan, U-FRPM (unsteady FRPM) method is developed by extending the FRPM method to be combined with the unsteady numerical solutions of the unsteady RANS equations to generate the turbulence considered as broadband noise sources. Firstly, an unsteady flow field is obtained from the unsteady RANS equations through CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Then, noise sources are generated using the U-FRPM method combined with acoustic analogy. Finally, the linear propagation model which is realized through BEM (Boundary Element Method) is combined with the generated sources to predict broadband noise at the listeners' position. The proposed technique is validated to compare its prediction result with the measured data.
Viscous flow around an actual ship is calculated by an use of RANS(Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) solver. Reynolds stress is modelled by using k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model and the law of wall is applied near the body. Body fitted coordinates are introduced for the treatment of the complex boundary of the ship hull form. The transformed equations in the computational domain are numerically solved by an employment of FVM(Finite Volume Method). SIMPLE(Semi-Implcit Pressure Linked Equation) method is adopted in the calculation of pressure and the solution of the disssssssscretized equation is obtained by the line-by-line method with the use of TDMA(Tri-Diagonal Matrix Algorithme). The subject ship model of actual calculation is 4,410 TEU class container carrier. For 4 geosim models the calculated viscous resistancce values are compared with the model test results and analyzed on their componentss. The resistance performance of an actual ship is predicted very resonably, so this mothod may be utilized as a design tool of hull form.
It has been highly demanded to improve the accuracy of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) methods for the assessment of the hydrodynamic performance of marine propellers in cavitating and non-cavitating flows. This paper presents a validation study on the numerical simulation of the tip vortex flow of a non-cavitating marine propeller SVA VP1304. The calculations are carried out by using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) approach, where the Reynolds Stress Model(RSM) is used for turbulence closure. The present paper contains a grid dependence test for the propeller open water simulations and a special emphasis is placed on conducting a local grid adaptation on the blade tip and in the tip vortex to reasonably reproduce the velocity and the pressure in the tip vortex flow field. The numerical results are compared with the experimental validation data, which are published in the second International Symposium on Marine Propulsors 2011(SMP'11). The present numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the experiments.

In this paper, the computational analysis of open-water characteristics for three model propellers(P4119, P4842 and 3 podded propeller of KRISO) is done by using a viscous-flow method based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The results are presented for open-water performances, blade-section pressures, and circumferentially-averaged velocity profiles for the all three propeller models. Overall close agreements with available experimental data are shown. However, some discrepancies are also found in the pressure near the leading edge of the propeller blade and the open-water performance of the podded propellers.

In this study, comparative analysis on the back-layer phenomena in the tunnel-fire driven flow is performed using numerical simulation with LES and RANS. FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator) code is employed to calculate the fire-driven turbulent flow for LES and Smartfire code is used for RANS. Hwang and Wargo's data of scaling tunnel fire experiment are employed to compare with the present numerical simulation. The modeled tunnel is 5.4m(L) ${\times}$ 0.4m(W) ${\times}$ 0.3m(H). Heat Release Rate (HRR) of fire is 3.3kW and ventilation-velocity is 0.33m/s in the main stream. The various grid-distributions are systematically tested with FDS code to analyze the effects of grid size. The LES method with FDS provides an improved back-layer flow behavior in comparison with the RANS (${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$) method by Smartfire. The FDS solvers, however, overpredict the velocity in the center region of flow which is caused by the defects in the tunnel-entrance turbulence strength and in the near-wall turbulent flow in FDS code.
This article presents the unsteady aerodynamic performance of crosswind stability obtained numerically for the ATM train. Results of numerical investigations of airflow past a train under different yawing conditions are summarized. Variations of occurrence flow angle from parallel to normal with respect to the direction of forward train motion resulted in the development of different flow patterns. The numerical simulation addresses the ability to resolve the flow field around the train subjected to relatively large yaw angles with three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model solved on a multi-block structured grid using a finite volume method. The massively separated flow for the higher yaw angles on the leeward side of the train justifies the use of RANS, where the results show good agreement with verification results. A method of solution is presented that can predict all aerodynamic coefficients and the wind characteristic curve at variety of angles at different speed.
A Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code with transition prediction model is developed and the computational results on an oscillating airfoil are compared with the experimental data for OA209 airfoil. An approximated eN method that can predict transition onset points and the length of transition region is directly applied to the RANS code. The hysteresis loop in dynamic stall is compared for the computational results using transition prediction and fully turbulent models with the experimental data. Results with transition prediction show more correlation with the experimental data than the fully turbulent computation.
