In the jet engines on the aircrafts cruising at high altitude over 20 km and subsonic speed, the Reynolds number in terms of the compressor blades becomes very low. In such an operating condition with low Reynolds number, it is widely reported that total pressure loss of the air flow through the compressor cascades increases dramatically due to separation of the boundary layer and the secondary-flow. But the detail of flow mechanisms causes the total pressure loss has not been fully understood yet. In the present study, two series of numerical investigations were conducted to study the effects of Reynolds number on the aerodynamic characteristics of compressor cascades. At first, the incompressible flow fields in the two-dimensional compressor cascade composed of C4 airfoils were numerically simulated with various values of Reynolds number. Compared with the corresponding experimental data, the numerically estimated trend of total pressure loss as a function of Reynolds number showed good agreement with that of experiment. From the visualized numerical results, the thickness of boundary layer and wake were found to increase with the decrease of Reynolds number. Especially at very low Reynolds number, the separation of boundary layer and vortex shedding were observed. The other series, as the preparatory investigation, the flow fields in the transonic compressor, NASA Rotor 37, were simulated under the several conditions, which corresponded to the operation at sea level static and at 10 km of altitude with low density and temperature. It was found that, in the case of operation at high altitude, the separation region on the blade surface became lager, and that the radial and reverse flow around the trailing edge become stronger than those under sea level static condition.
The Reynolds equation is commonly used to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a spool valve. However, the applicability of the Reynolds equation is questionable for analyzing a spool valve because cavitation often occurs in the grooves of the valve and the depth of a groove is much higher than the clearance in most cases. In this study, the validity of the Reynolds equation in the spool valve analysis is investigated by comparing the results obtained from the Reynolds equation and those obtained from the Navier-Stokes equation. The results are compared in terms of the lateral forces, friction forces, and volume flow rates (leakages). A significant difference of more than 20% is found in the lateral forces in cases where cavitation occurs and there are many grooves. Therefore, the Navier-Stokes equation should be used to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a spool valve when cavitation occurs and when the spool valve contains many grooves.
Experimental study was conducted to obtain the air velocity profiles in turbulent pipe flow. The acrylic smooth pipe (${\phi}=80mm$) was used for the test section of the flow loop. It was known that the velocity profiles of turbulent flow were different with Reynolds numbers and the viscous sublayer was usually quite thin. The following conclusions were drawn from the experimental investigations. Maximum velocity of the pipe center and flow-rate are useful for the duct design on the spot. The velocity profiles of high Reynolds number was flatter than those of low Reynolds number. It was known that the exponent, n, for power-law velocity profiles was $6{\sim}9$ depending on Reynolds number ranging from $10^4$ to $10^5$ in the turbulent flow, However, in this experiment study, it was $9{\sim}14$ depending on Reynolds number ranging from 17,000 to 123,727 in the turbulent flow, and $1.7{\sim}3.5$ depending on Reynolds number ranging from 2,442 to 4,564 in the transition region.
As a circular cylinder has a comparatively simple shape and becomes a basic problem for flows around other various shapes of bodies, the problem of two-dimensional viscous flow around the circular cylinder has been investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. But not a few problems are left unsolved. It is well known that the calculations are successfully made with the approximations of Stokes or Oseen for very low Reynolds numbers, but as Reynolds number is increased, Oseen's approximations as well as Stokes's ones become more and more remote from the exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Therefore, in this paper, the authors transform the Navier-Stokes equations into the finite difference equations in the steady two-dimensional viscous flow at Reynolds number up to 45, and then solve the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations numerically. Also, the authors examine the accuracy of the solution by means of flow visualization with aluminum powder. The main results are as follows; (1) The critical Reynolds number at which twin vortices begin to form in the rear of the circular cylinder is found to be 6 in the experiment and 4 in the numerical solution. (2) As Reynolds number is increased, it is proved that the ratio of the length of the twin vortices to the diameter is grown almost linearly, both experimentally and numerically. (3) Separation angle is also increased according to reynolds number. But it is found that it would converge into 101.3 degrees, both experimentally and numerically.
Researches on the Reynolds number effect on bridge decks have made slow progress due to the complicated nature of the subject. Heretofore, few studies on this topic have been made. In this paper, aerostatic coefficients, Strouhal number ($S_t$), pressure distribution and Reynolds number ($R_e$) of Great Belt East Bridge and Sutong Bridge were investigated based on deterministic vortex method (DVM). In this method, Particle Strength Exchange (PSE) was chosen to implement the simulation of the flow around bluff body and to analyze the micro-mechanism of the aerostatic loading and Reynolds number effect. Compared with the results obtained from wind tunnel tests, reliability of numerical simulation can be proved. Numerical results also showed that the Reynolds number effect on aerostatic coefficients and Strouhal number of the two bridges can not be neglected. In the range of the Reynolds number from $10^5$ to $10^6$, it has great effect on the Strouhal number of Sutong Bridge, while the St is difficult to obtain from wind tunnel tests in this range.

Incompressible flow over a backward-facing step is computed by low Reynolds number turbulence models in order to compare with direct simulation results. In this study, selected low Reynolds number 1st and 2nd (Algebraic Stress Model : ASM) moment closure turbulence models are adopted and compared with each other. Each turbulence model predicts different flow characteristics, different re-attachment point, velocity profiles and Reynolds stress distribution etc. Results by .kappa.-.epsilon. turbulence models indicate that predicted re-attachment lengths are shorter than those by standard model. Turbulent intensity and eddy viscosity by low Reynolds number .kappa.-.epsilon. models are still greater than DNS results. The results by algebraic stress model (ASM) are more reasonable than those by .kappa.-.epsilon. models. The convective scheme is QUICK (Quadratic Upstream Interpolation for Convective Kinematics) and SIMPLE algorithm is adopted. Reynolds number based on step height and inlet free stream velocity is 5100.

An experimental study has been performed on the single phase flow and convective heat transfer in trapezoidal microchannels. The microchannel was about $270{\mu}m$ wide, $800{\mu}m$ deep. and 7 mm long, which might ensure hydrodynamically fully-developed laminar flow at a low Reynolds number. The experiments were conducted with R1l3 and water, with the Reynolds number ranging from approximately 30 to 5000 for friction factor and 30 to 700 for the Nusselt number. Friction factors in laminar are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of existing correlation suggesting that a conventional analysis approach can be employed in predicting flow friction behavior in microchannels. However turbulent friction factors are hardly predictable by the existing correlations. The experimental results show that the Nusselt number is not a constant but increases almost linearly with the Reynolds number even the flow is fully developed (Re < 100). The dependence of the Nusslet number on the Reynolds number is contradictory to the conventional theory. At a Reynolds number greater than 100, the Nusselt number increases slowly with the Reynolds number, where thennally developing flow is responsible for the increase of the Nusselt number with the Reynolds number.

This study experimentally investigate how the Reynolds number affect cavitation performance in a turbopump inducer using water. Cavitation performance has been determined by the static pressure measured at the inlet of the inducer. Reynolds number has been varied by varying water temperature and inducer rotational speed to maintain constant non-dimensional thermal parameter. At low non-dimensional thermal parameter, the critical cavitation number is insensitive to Reynolds number. However, at high non-dimensional thermal parameter, the critical cavitation number increased as Reynolds number increases. Thus, cavitation performance is deteriorated as Reynolds number increases when thermal effect exists.
For practical calculations, the Reynolds equation is frequently used to analyze the lubricating flow. The full Navier-Stokes Equations are used to find validity limits of Reynolds equation in a lubricating flow regime by result comparison. As the amplitude of wavy upper wall increased at a given average channel height, the difference between Navier-Stokes and lubrication theory decreased slightly : however, as the minimum distance in channel throat increased, the differences in the maximum pressure between Navier-Stokes and lubrication theory became large.

This paper investigates the impacts of the drag-related weighting coefficients on mean velocity and turbulence structures. The transport equations for the Reynolds stress of vegetated open-channel flows are derived by using the temporal- and horizontal-averaging scheme. It is found that the total Reynolds stress of vegetated open channel flows consists of the Reynolds stress due to temporally fluctuating velocities and the Reynolds stress due to spatially fluctuating velocities. The drag-related weighting coefficient $C_{fk}$ for the total Reynolds stress component is found to be unit, while the coefficient for the Reynolds stress due to temporally fluctuating velocities can be negligible. This is the reason why very small weighting coefficients in previous studies yield very good agreements with measured data. In other words, the Reynolds stress due to spatially fluctuating velocities remains still unknown, especially due to the large number of measuring locations. Through a developed Reynolds stress model, vegetated open-channel flows are simulated and compared with measured data from the literature. Comparisons reveal that the computed mean flow and Reynolds stress structures are hardly affected by the drag-related weighting coefficients. However, the computed turbulence intensity profiles are significant different with the drag-related weighting coefficients. A budget analysis of the transport equations for the Reynolds stress component is carried to investigate why turbulence intensity is affected by the drag-related weighting coefficients.
