This paper considers a strategy for planning of rework in semiconductor monitoring burn-in test process. The equipment error in monitoring burn-in test process generates many defects. These defects are transformed into good products by rework process, i.e. retest. Rework has the advantage of saving production costs. But rework increases holding costs and incurs rework costs. In monitoring burn-in test process, rework depends on operator's experience with no pre-defined specification. In practice, a number of rework activities are performed with respect to the product importance and inventory quantity. Moreover, disregard for order jobs schedule have caused due date penalties. So a strategy for planning of rework by which order jobs schedule are not affected is suggested. Futhermore, production costs, rework costs and inventory costs for planning of rework are considered.
As the quality and environmental problems become one of the most concerned issues of company, the rework policy needs to be efficiently designed and implemented to sustain the company's competitiveness. This paper examines three basic rework policies in multi-stage production systems and analyzes them in terms of costs of setup, production, inspection, and inventory. For analyzing the performance of the rework policies, we propose mathematical models which can compute total production cost and determine the optimal production batch size to minimize the total production cost. The rework policies are classified by the number and location of inspection stages. Using the mathematical models, we could analyze the performances of rework policies and suggest the optimal rework policy according to each manufacturing environment. The analyses show that the proposed model can be used to analytically evaluate and choose the rework policies.
This paper presents a dispatching algorithm for nonidentical parallel machines problem considering rework, sequence dependent setup times and release times. For each pair of a machine and a job type, rework probability of each job on a machine can be known through historical data acquisition. The heuristic scheduling scheme named by EDDR (Earliest Due Date with Rework probability) algorithm is proposed in this paper making use of the rework probability. The proposed dispatching algorithm is measured by two objective function value: 1) total tardiness and 2) the number of reworked jobs, respectively. The extensive computational results show that the proposed algorithm gives very efficient schedules superior to the existing dispatching algorithms.
This paper presents an extended EMQ model which determines an optimal production quantity for a single stage production system when defective items are stochastically produced in the production process and they are re-processed in the rework process to convert them into non-defectives. Through the mathematical modeling, an optimal solution minimizing the average cost per unit time and minimum average cost as well as some properties are derived. It can be shown that each of the existing models is a special case of the proposed model under some conditions. Numerical experiment is carried out to examine the behavior of the proposed model and support properties derived.
In the past, a strategic management of work demands has been increasingly challenged to design-build (DB) firms. Such a management is capable of providing sufficient profitable impact of a project on them. Total project profit is mainly related to actual resources, work completion time, amount of rework, and costs. The degree of recycling work packages in the DB project delivery system is used as a measure of the quality of the performed work. However, there are few models available to evaluate the impact of a demand management strategy on the DB firms and to predict its behavior. We propose a decision-making support model as an aid for assessing the amount of rework and for predicting project profit resulting in a convincible demand management strategy. This model is constructed by using a dynamic feedback approach that can analyze the problems arising in complex managerial systems. For the purpose of illustration, widely acceptable strategies were applied into the model to explore their impacts on the DB firms. The results indicate that the model is helpful for the managers in selecting the most appropriate demand management strategy for successfully achieving their objectives.
We consider the M/G/1 with Bernoulli feedback, where the served customers wait in the feedback queue for rework with probability p. It is important to decide the moment of dispatching in feedback systems because of the dispatching cost for rework. Up to date, researches have analyzed for the instantaneous-dispatching model or the case that dispatching epoch is determined by the state of feedback queue. In this paper we deal with a dispatching model whose dispatching epoch depends on main queue. We adopt supplementary variable method for our model and a numerical example is given for clarity.
Dispatching rule for parallel machines with multi product is proposed in this paper, In current market, customer's request for higher quality is increasing, In accordance with such demand, manufacturers are focusingon improving the quality of the products. Such shift in production objective is risky. The possibility ofneglecting another important factor in customer satisfaction increases, namely due dates. From the aspect ofimproving quality, frequency of product assignment to limited number of high performance machines willincrease. This will lead to increased waiting time which can incur delays, In the case of due date orientedproduct dispatch, Products are assigned to machines without consideration for quality. Overall deterioration ofproduct quality is inevitable, In addition, Poor products will undergo rework process which can increase delays. The objective of this research is dispatching products to minimize due date delays while improving overallquality. Quality index is introduced to provide means of standardizing product quality. The index is used toassure predetermined quality level while minimizing product delays when dispatching products. Qualitystandardization method and dispatching algorithm is presented. And performance evaluation is performed withcomparison to various dispatching methods.
Design is an iterative, generative, and multidisciplinary process by its nature. Iteration occurs often in most of the engineering design and development projects including construction. Design iterations cause rework, and extra efforts are required to get the optimal sequence and to manage the projects. Contrary to simple design, isolation of the generative iterations in complex design systems is very difficult, but reduction in overall iterations is possible. Design depends upon the information flow within domain and also among various design disciplines and organizations. Therefore, it is suggested that managers should be aware about the crucial iterations causing rework and optimal sequence as well. In this way, managers can handle design parameters related to such iterations pro-actively. There are a number of techniques to reduce iterations for various kinds of engineering designs. In this paper, parameter based Design Structure Matrix (DSM) is chosen. To create this DSM, a survey was performed and then partitioned using a model. This paper provides an easy approach to those companies involved in or intend to be involved in "design and build projects".
