MF Membrane Application for Water Treatment in Japan

  • Membrane Technology, which has been in use for over twenty five years, has established itself as one of the principle separation methods. With improved technology, Reverse Osmosis ("RO") has been applied to large volume water treatment facilities. UF and MF Membrane Technology has, up until recently, been applied to small scale water treatment facilities. The fouling of membrane has restricted the growth of Membrane Technology in Water Treatment. Membrane fouling compound found in water causes the loss of flux across the membrane by absorbing to membrane and plugging their pores. Various methods have been used in the reduction and prevention of membrane fouling. For RO, a conventional pre-treatment system removes the pollutants, preventing the function decline of RO membrane by keeping SDI < 4 as the standard condition of feed water. UF and MF Membrane Technology that must have pre-treatment function within itself, are required to keep its ability not to be influenced by fouling.y fouling.

  • In recent years it has become necessary to design water management system to minimize water consumption as well as satisfy more stringent environmental requirements. This is mainly due to the seasonal water shortage and environmental problems on water pollution that have taken place at many industrialized regions in Korea. Accordingly, membrane technology in Korea is finding increasing application in the water industry because it has been found to be effective and economic treatment method compared with conventional technology. The membrane processes with the greatest potential for water and wastewater treatment are microfiltration(MF), ultrafiltration(UF), nanofiltration(NF) and reverse osmosis (RO), which utilize pressure differentials.

  • 복합막은 기존의 비대칭막에 비해서 극히 얇은 표면층을 형성할 수 있다. 이러한 복합막은 배제율도 우수할 뿐만아니라 투과속도 또한 매우 큰 특징을 가지고 있으며, 해수의 담수화를 비롯하여 초순수 제조 등 각종 산업분야에서 많이 응용되고 있다. 우수한 분리막을 제조하기 위해서는 막의 표면층을 보다 더 치밀하고 얇게 형성할 수 있어야 한다. 이렇게 하기 위해서는 지지막 또한 매우 중요한 요인으로 작용한다. 표면층이 치밀하고, 가능한 한 porosity가 큰 지지막을 제조해야한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 고분자 물질로 Polyethersulfone을 사용하여 지지막을 만들었다. 이 지지막위에 계면중합법으로 NF/RO용 복합막을 제조하였다. 높은 투과 속도 및 염의 배제율이 우수한 복합막을 제조하기 위해서 먼저 Polymer 농도, 첨가제 종류및 농도 등에 의한 각종 제막조건에 따른 지지막의 성능을 조사하였다. 여기에 Monomer 농도를 변화시켜서 계면중합으로 복합막을 제조하여 그 성능 변화를 측정하였다.

  • 산업발전에 따라 발생하는 각종 오염물질에 의한 양질의 물 부족현상을 해결하거나 산업적으로 특정물질을 분리하기 위하여 새로운 분리기술이 개발되고 있으며 이는 앞으로 인류에 대한 가장 절실한 기술로 떠오를 것이다. 이러한 측면에서 분리막은 가장 효율절인 분리기술로 여겨져 지난 30년간 눈부신 발전을 해왔고 최근 국내에서도 소재개발과 함께 이를 응용한 분리막 System개발이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 분리막에 의한 공정은 상변화가 없는 분리공정이므로 에너지 측면에서 효율적이며 공정자체가 간단하여 점차 보편적인 기술로 자리를 잡아가고 그 기본원료가 부직포, 중공사나 장단섬유이므로 주로 화섬회사 위주로 소재개발이 주로 되고 있다. 본 발표에서는 최근에 국내에서 생산되기 시작한 역삼투막의 제조 방법과 특성 및 개발동향을 총괄적으로 소개하고자 한다.

Characteristics of Pressure Drop in the Membrane Support Sheet for Reverse Osmosis (역삼투압용 막지지천의 압력강하 특성)

  • Fabrics of polyester, polyacrylics, nylon and cotton were tested to investigate the possibility. of using these matehals as a membrane support sheet. Considering the physical properties such as compaction rate, membrane embossing, water flux, the chemical and mechanical properties, 50 denlet polyester fabrics was found to be the appropriate material as a membrane support sheet among the tested materials. The experimental parameters such as pressure drop, compression pressure and viscosity were changed to investigate the effects of these parameters on the flow patten in this membrane support sheet. As a result, it was shown that Darcy's law could be satisfactorily applied to describe the flow pattern in this membrane support sheet.

INTRODUCTION : With good physical and chemical properties as a membrane material, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has been widely used for the preparation of several kinds of membranes for different applications. Considering such good physical chemical properties, some people have tried to use it for the formation of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes with a good chemical stability as well as high flux and high rejection rate. However, unfortunately, the performance of the RO membranes based on PVA has not been satisfactory yet. The PVA RO membranes thermally crosslinked have shown very low flux and relatively low salt rejection. In this experiment, ionic polymers such as sodium alginate and chitosan were used together with PVA to increase the nanofiltration performance of the PVA membranes.

  • 역삼투공정은 선택적 투과성을 가진 막을 이용하여 혼합용액으로부터 특정물질을 분리, 농축 또는 정제하기 위하여 널리 응용되는 분리막기술중의 하나이며, 연속공정이 용이하고 단순히 압력만을 가하는 물리적 조작이므로 원리 및 장치가 간단하여 해수 담수화, 폐수처리, 유용물질 회수, 초순수제조, 식품 및 의약품의 분리, 농축 등 여러 산업분야에서 응용되고 있다. 그러나 매우 큰 삼투압을 나타내는 용액의 농축을 위해서는 삼투압보다 큰 적용압력을 가해주어야 하나 사용된 막은 일정압력 이상에서는 수축되어 제기능을 발휘하지 못하게 되므로 일반적인 역삼투공정으로써는 큰 삼투압을 나타내는 용액의 농축에는 사용될 수 없다. 이는 용액의 삼투압이 씨스템에서 가해줄 수 있는 압력보다 커지기 때문으로, 이 삼투압차를 줄여줄 수 있다면 같은 압력에서도 더 큰 농축효과를 얻을 수 있다.

Solar power and desalination plant for copper industry: improvised techniques

  • In India, continuous production of electricity and sweet/potable water from Solar power and desalination plant plays a major role in the industries. Particularly in Copper industry, Solar power adopts Solar field collector combined with thermal storage system and steam Boiler, Turbine & Generator (BTG) for electricity production and desalination plant adopts Reverse osmosis (RO) for sweet/potable water production which cannot be used for long hours of power generation and consistency of energy supply for industrial processes and power generation cannot be ensured. This paper presents an overview of enhanced technology for Solar power and Desalination plant for Copper industry making it continuous production of electricity and sweet/potable water. The conventional technology can be replaced with this proposed technique in the existing and upcoming industries.

  • Classical membrane processes like microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) are being applied in the last years more frequently in environmental and effluent process problems. Newer technologies and developments like pervaporation (PV) and gas sepaxation (GS) recently found commercial applications in the treatment of waste waters and gas streams. The incentive here is either the clean-up from organic components to comply with federal emission regulations or the recovery of the organics for economical reasons. Processes still in their development stage are combinations of chemical reactions with membrane processes to separate and treat $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ laden waste gas streams in the clean-up of stack-gases. In this paper we will first give a short overview of the more recent developments in MF, UF and RO. This is followed by a closer look on newer technologies applied in environmental problems. The applications looked at are the recovery of organic components from solvent laden gas streams and the separation of organic volatiles from aqueous waste waters via pervaporation. Technical solutions, the advantages and disadvantages of the processes and. where possible, cost estimations will be presented.

  • The main purpose of this work is to investigate the performance of membranes for treatment of dyeing wastewater. The microfiltration (MF) membranes (titania-blended polysulfone & alumina) were prepared. The nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were kindly supplied by the Sae-Han. In order to reuse the wastewater for dyeing, the effluents were treated by the high flux RO and the fouling resistant RO (FRM) membranes. Also, the NF membrane was used for water reuse in rinsing.
