4-tert -octylphenol에 노출된 저서성 요각류 Tigriopus japonicus s.l.의 발생지연 현상 (Developmental Delay Effect of Harpacticoid Copepod, Tigriopus japonicus s.l. Exposure to 4-tert-octylphenol)

  • The ecotoxicological effects of 4-tert-octylphenol were observed on Harpacticoid copepoda Tigriopus japonicus s.l. gathered and cultured from tidal pool of Korean coast. There were no significant differences in survival rate (except 10 $\mu$g/L; 70.00%) and sex ratio (except 30 $\mu$g/L) on T. japonicus s.l. exposed to 4-tert-octylphenol. However, 4-tert-octylphenol induced developmental delay (copepodite emergence day and adult male mergence day) and retardation of first brooding day of adult female. Moreover the body size and biomass decreased at 4-tert-octylphenol exposure. As a result, detailed life-cycle research of T. japonicus s.l. may yield potential bioindicators for environmental monitoring and assessment.

랜덤하중에서의 균열전파속도 추정법에 관한 연구 (A Prediction of Crack Propagation Rate under Random Loading)

  • Under variable amplitude loading conditions, retardation or accelerated condition of fatigue crack growth occurs with every cycle, Because fatigue crack growth behavior varied depend on load time history. The modeling of stress amplitude with storm loading acted to ships and offshore structures applied this paper. The crack closure behavior examine by recording the variation in load-strain relationship. By taking process mentioned above, fatigue crack growth rate, crack length, stress intensity factor, and crack closure stress intensity factor were obtained from the stress cycles of each type of storm ; A(6m), B(7m), C(8m), D(9m), E(11m) and F(15m) which was wave height. It showed that the good agreement with between the experiment results and simulation of storm loads. So this estimated method of crack propagtion rate gives a good criterion for the safe design of vessels and marine structure.

아스팔트 덧씌우기 하부의 Geogrid 부착방법에 따른 반사균열 지연특성 비교 (Comparison of Geogrid Bonding Methods under Asphalt Overlay Layer for Reflection Cracking Retardation)

  • 본 연구는 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장에 나타나는 반사균열을 제어하기 위하여 노후된 시멘트 콘크리트 포장과 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장 경계면에 보강재의 효과적인 부착 방법을 찾기 위하여 수행하였다. 이를 위한 부착재로는 RSC-4 유화아스팔트, 컴파운드, 불포화 폴리에스터 수지 (UPR) 등 3종류를 사용하였다. 또한 아스팔트 혼합물은 3종류의 밀입도 혼합물(AC 60-80, RLDPE 8%, PG 76-22)을 사용하였다. 보강 재료로서 유리섬유 그리드 하부에 직포가 부착된 것을 사용하였다. 복합모드 파괴(mode II)의 모사를 위한 촉진시험은 휠트랙킹 장비를 이용하여 수행하였다. 반사균열의 진전은 피로수명으로서 하중 사이클 수에 따라 측정하였고, 공시체의 변위는 각각 시험 공시체에 대하여 demec 게이지를 이용하여 측정하였다. 본 연구 결과, UPR 부착이 가장 효과적이었으며 다음은 RSC-4의 순이었다. 그러나 현장 적용성을 고려할 때 , RSC-4 유제가 보강 재료의 부착을 위해 적절한 선택으로 판단된다.

벤토나이트에 첨가한 은 이온에 의한 아이오딘 이동 저지 메커니즘 규명을 위한 X-선 흡수 스펙트라 분석 (X-ray Absorption Spectra Analysis for the Investigation of the Retardation Mechanism of Iodine Migration by the Silver Ion Added to Bentonite)

  • 고준위방사성폐기물에서 유출되어 나오는 아이오딘의 이동을 저지하기 위하여 은을 흡착시킨 벤토나이트 블록에 NaI 용액을 흘려주었을 때 대부분의 아이오딘이 흡착되었다. 이 은이온에 의한 아이오딘의 저지 메커니즘을 상세히 조사하기 위하여 아이오딘과 접촉하기 전후의 은이 흡착된 벤토나이트의 X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES)와 Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) 스펙트 럼과 표준물질로서 AgO, $Ag_2O$, AgI의 스펙트럼을 비교하였다. 그 결과, 벤토나이트에 흡착되었던 은이 떨어져 나와 AgI 침전 클러스터를 형성함으로서 아이오딘의 이동이 지연되는 것으로 생각된다.

  • Citrullinemia는 유전성 대사 질환 중 하나로서 argininosuccinic acid synthetase 결손에 의해 발생하는 질병이다. 구토, 기면 또는 보챔, 경련, 의식장애와 같은 증상이 고암모니아혈증에 의해 초래되고 고암모니아혈증을 신속히 치료해야만 비가역적인 뇌손상을 줄일 수 있다. 저자들은 소변 유기산 분석과 혈중 및 요중 아미노산 분석에 의해 citrullinemia 1례를 경험했기에 이에 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다.

브롬화 난연제의 환경오염도 관리 방안 (Monitoring of Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) for the management of Their Contamination in Environments)

  • Brominated flame retardants have the market share of 40%, comparing others because of their low cost and highly effective retardation against the flame. However, their toxic effects in human and properties of the accumulation in the environments have been issued among the international organization such as EU, OECD and etc. It, therefore, was surveyed the classification, toxic effects, and the usage of Brominated flame retardants, the trends for their managements in the world and Korea, and their contaminated levels in Korean Peninsula. In addition, the management directions for them were proposed. Penta, octa, and deca-BDE among brominated retardants will seem to be prohibited by the regulation as a flame retardants for plastics in Europe because of their toxic effects. Although Penta and Octa BDEs was used marginally in Korea, deca-BDE was 27% of brominated flame retardants (49,050 ton) which had been used in 2002. However, risk assessment for brominated retardants might not launched in Korea, yet. These reports demonstrate that toxic brominated retardants such as PBDEs will be assessed for their usage and the level of contamination in the environment in the area of the point sources like the industrial areas, incinerators and etc. However, the law to regulate the hazardous chemicals seems not to be dictated the monitoring of their contamination in the environment. We, therefore, suggest how to evaluate and to monitor the toxic contaminants with EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) and LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) system. Further, to establish the management system of BFRs (such as the monitering of contamination levels in environments, life cycle assessment, and risk assessment for the toxic chemicals), It can be recommended the law to deal with the method analyzing chemicals will be established, which contains QA/QC (Quality Assurance and Quality Control) to evaluate the analytic capability of the companies to prepare EIS (Environment Impact Statement) or other institutes for analyzing chemicals.

Impact of quorum quenching bacteria on biofouling retardation in submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR)

  • Membrane biofouling is a critical operational problem that hinders the rapid commercialization of MBRs. Quorum quenching (QQ) has been investigated widely to control membrane biofouling and is accepted as a promising anti-fouling strategy. Various QQ strategies based on bacterial and enzymatic agents have been identified and applied successfully. Whereas, this study aimed to compare indigenously isolated QQ strain i.e., Enterobacter cloaca with well reported Rhodococcus sp. BH4. Both bacterial species were immobilized in polymeric beads and introduced to two different MBRs keeping the overall beads to volume ratio as 1%. Efficiencies of these strains were monitored in terms of prolonging the membrane filtration cycle of MBR, release of extra-cellular polymeric substances, membrane resistivity measurements and mineralization of signal molecules and permeate quality. Indigenous strain (Enterobacter cloaca) was added to $QQ-MBR_E$ while Rhodococcus sp. BH4 was introduced to $QQ-MBR_R$. QQ bacterial embedded beads showed enhanced filtration cycles up to 1.4 and 2.3 times for $QQ-MBR_E$ and $QQ-MBR_R$ respectively as compared to control MBR (C-MBR). Soluble EPS concentration of 52 mg/L was observed in C-MBR while significantly lower EPS concentration of 20 and 10 mg/L was witnessed in $QQ-MBR_E$ and $QQ-MBR_R$, respectively. Therefore, substantial reduction in biofouling showed the effectiveness of indigenous strain.

Two key genes closely implicated with the neuropathological characteristics in Down syndrome: DYRK1A and RCAN1

  • The most common genetic disorder Down syndrome (DS) displays various developmental defects including mental retardation, learning and memory deficit, the early onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD), congenital heart disease, and craniofacial abnormalities. Those characteristics result from the extra-genes located in the specific region called 'Down syndrome critical region (DSCR)' in human chromosome 21. In this review, we summarized the recent findings of the DYRK1A and RCAN1 genes, which are located on DSCR and thought to be closely associated with the typical features of DS patients, and their implication to the pathogenesis of neural defects in DS. DYRK1A phosphorylates several transcriptional factors, such as CREB and NFAT, endocytic complex proteins, and AD-linked gene products. Meanwhile, RCAN1 is an endogenous inhibitor of calcineurin A, and its unbalanced activity is thought to cause major neuronal and/or non-neuronal malfunction in DS and AD. Interestingly, they both contribute to the learning and memory deficit, altered synaptic plasticity, impaired cell cycle regulation, and AD-like neuropathology in DS. By understanding their biochemical, functional and physiological roles, we hope to get important molecular basis of DS pathology, which would consequently lead to the basis to develop the possible therapeutic tools for the neural defects in DS.

용접구조물 요접토우부의 잔류응력이 피로강도에 미치는 영향 평가 (Evaluation of Influence on the Fatigue Strength of Residual Stresses at the Welded Toe of Welded Structure.)

  • This Study is to investigate the influence of weld residual stresses on the fatigue crack growth behaviors in pressure ves-sel reinforcement. In order to perform this study, the automatically welded specimens are prepared. The material is ASTM A516 grade 60 steel used in pressure vessel mainly. For pad-on-plate of skip welding continuous welding and PWHT specimen, fatigue crack initiation is generally initiat-ed at weld starting and end toe zone, and ruptured at weld starting toe zone, Fatigue life if pad-on-plate continuous speci-men is increased more than that of pad-on-plate skip fillet welding specimene about 85% under low load, about 20% under high load, and decreased than that of two-pad continuous welding specimen about 85%. In da/dN-$\Delta$ Κ curve under low load, pad-on-plate skip fillet welding specimen showed retardation on the initial crack, and the fatigue crack growth rate at the low region of $\Delta$Κ greater specimene E(3.8{\times}10^{-6}$mm/cycle). And the fatigue life of welding specimen was smaller than that of PWHT specimen.

DNA damage to human genetic disorders with neurodevelopmental defects

  • Although some mutations are beneficial and are the driving force behind evolution, it is important to maintain DNA integrity and stability because it contains genetic information. However, in the oxygen-rich environment we live in, the DNA molecule is under constant threat from endogenous or exogenous insults. DNA damage could trigger the DNA damage response (DDR), which involves DNA repair, the regulation of cell cycle checkpoints, and the induction of programmed cell death or senescence. Dysregulation of these physiological responses to DNA damage causes developmental defects, neurological defects, premature aging, infertility, immune system defects, and tumors in humans. Some human syndromes are characterized by unique neurological phenotypes including microcephaly, mental retardation, ataxia, neurodegeneration, and neuropathy, suggesting a direct link between genomic instability resulting from defective DDR and neuropathology. In this review, rare human genetic disorders related to abnormal DDR and damage repair with neural defects will be discussed.
