It is generally known that the mechanism of behavior in the flexible earth retaining system is relatively more complicated than in the rigid earth retaining system. Moreover in the case of long span strut supporting system the analysis of strut axial force change becomes more difficult when the differences of ground condition and excavation work progress on both sides of excavation section are added. When deeper excavation than the specification or installation delay of supporting system or change of ground condition happen during construction process, lots of axial force can be induced in some struts, which threaten the safety of construction. This paper introduces two examples of long span deep excavation where struts and rock bolts were used as a supporting system with flexible wall structure. The characteristics of ground deformation and strut axial force change, which were measured in the sections of two examples that are 50 meters apart in one construction site and have almost similar design and construction conditions were analysed, the similarity and difference between measurement results of two examples were compared and investigated. This article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in future projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.
Recently the installation of reinforced earth retaining walls in the domestic construction site has increased, surpassing conventional RC walls. These reinforced walls have various types depending on the reinforcing material, installation method and the form of face panel. However, there are difficulties in design and construction management due to the unproved safety of construction method. In case of reinforcing materials, despite the fact that they come in all different sizes and types produced by small businesses or partially imported with cheap price and low quality, no proper standards for designing the walls have been suggested. In order to apply reinforced retaining wall system to broad cases and design the walls effectively considering site conditions, specific design and construction guidelines for efficient construction management are needed. In conclusion, this study verified that reduction factors can be greatly affected by grain sizes and stiffness of backfill materials and granularity range, therefore in case of relatively large construction site, it is required to redesign the reinforced retaining wall by evaluating site installation resistance test, applying respective reduction factors to each backfill material and select the right geogrid depending on the usage of retaining wall so as to enhance the safety of reinforced earth retaining walls with efficiency.
The coal wall, gob-side backfill, and gangues in goaf, constitute the support system for Gob-side entry retaining (GER) in coal mines. Reasonably allocating and utilizing their bearing capacities are key scientific and technical issues for the safety and economic benefits of the GER technology. At first, a mechanical model of GER was established and a governing equation for coordinated bearing of the coal-backfill-gangue support system was derived to reveal the coordinated bearing mechanism. Then, considering the bearing characteristics of the coal wall, gob-side backfill and gangues in goaf, their quantitative design methods were proposed, respectively. Next, taking the No. 2201 haulage roadway serving the No. 7 coal seam in Jiangjiawan Mine, China, as an example, the design calculations showed that the strains of both the coal wall and gob-side backfill were larger than their allowable strains and the rotational angle of the lateral main roof was larger than its allowable rotational angle. Finally, flexible-rigid composite supporting technology and roof cutting technology were designed and used. In situ investigations showed that the deformation and failure of surrounding rocks were well controlled and both the coal wall and gob-side backfill remained stable. Taking the coal wall, gob-side backfill and gangues in goaf as a whole system, this research takes full consideration of their bearing properties and provides a quantitative basis for design of the support system.

CWSII method was developed to overcome the problems of frequent occurrence in the application of existing downward construction methods, especially in the case of using slurry wall instead of SCW or CIP as a retaining wall. By the improvements in connecting steel beams with the wall, CWSII method is able to ensure the settlement of a steel beam and the diaphragm effect of a slab while reducing the degree of difficulty and the term of works and the cost of construction. As the desired results, CWS method can be applied as a practical downward construction method regardless of the type of retaining wall. In this paper, besides the concept and features of CWSII method, it can be seen that the method can provide reliable and economical performances by comparing with existing methods.

When compared with conventional retaining wall system, there are many advantages to reinforced soil such as cost effectiveness, flexibility and so on. The use of reinforced soil have been increased in the last 17 years in Korea. In this study, a full-scale reinforced soil with rigid facing were constructed to investigate the behavior of reinforcing system. The results of soil pressure and strain of reinforcement during construction are described. The influence of compaction on soil pressure and strain of reinforcement is addressed. The results show that lateral earth pressures on the wall are active state during backfill. It is obtained that the lateral soil pressure depends on the installation condition of pressure cell and construction condition. It is also observed that maximum tensile strains of reinforcement are located on 50cm to 150cm from the wall. Long-term measurement will be followed to verify the design assumptions with respect to the distribution of lateral stress in the reinforcement

In this study, an attempt is made to apply the concept of fuzzy-bayesian theory to the integrity assessment of structure system, and uncertainty states are represented in terms of fuzzy sets which define several linguistic variables such as "very good", "good", "average", "poor", "very poor", etc. Especially, the concept of fuzzy conditional probability aids to derive a new reliability analysis which includes the subjective assessment of engineers without introducing any additional correction factors. The fuzzy concept are also used as reliability indexes for the condition assessment based on the proposed models, the proposed fuzzy theory-based approach with the results of PEM and AFOSM are applied to retaining wall.

For prediction of ground movement per the excavation step, observational results of ground movement during the construction was very different with prediction during the analysis of design. step because of the uncertainty of the numerical analysis modelling, the soil parameter, and the condition of a construction field, etc. however accuratly numerical analysis method was applied. Therefore, the management system through the construction field measurement should be achieved for grasping the situation during the excavation. Until present, the measurement system restricted by ‘Absolute Value Management system’only analyzing the stability of present step was executed. So, it was difficult situation to expect the prediction of ground movement for the next excavation step. In this situation, it was developed that ‘The Management system TOMAS-EXCAV’ consisted of ‘Absolute value management system’ analyzing the stability of present step and ‘Prediction management system’ expecting the ground movement of next excavation step and analyzing the stability of next excavation step by‘Back Analysis’. TOMAS-EXCAV could be applied to all uncertainty of earth retaining structures analysis by connecting ‘Forward analysis program’ and ‘Back analysis program’ and optimizing the main design variables using SQP-MMFD optimization method through measurement results. The application of TOMAS-EXCAV was confirmed that verifed the three earth retaing construction field by back analysis.
A finite element computer program is developed for the specific analysis of earth retaining structures in urban excavation. Unlike the existing multi -purpose FEM programs, the newly developed program (EM) consists of very simple and easy data processing system for the urban excavation. A non-linear material model(GDHM, Generalized Decoupled Hyperbolic Models is deviloped and implemented in the program EM. The results of large scale model tests for earth retaining structures are used for the vertification of EM along whit GDHM, and the results were satisfactory, but it was found that the program EM needs minor modification for the improvement of its accuracy.

The strength properties of wooden model retaining wall made of pitch pine (Pinus rigida Miller) was evaluated. Three different types of wooden model retaining wall were made of the 11cm square timber treated with CUAZ-2 (Copper Azole). The retaining wall was made into the 4 layers of crossbar and the 3 layers of vertical-bar, of which the size was 86 cm high, 200 cm long and 96 cm wide. Type I was control and in Type II 20 cm vertical-bars and 93 cm vertical-bars were arranged alternately to decrease wood usage. TypeIII was similar to TypeII except that the connection between crossbars was reinforced with the wooden armature. In each type, the strength properties of retaining wall were investigated by horizontal loading test and the deformation of structure by image processing (AICON 3D DPA-PRO system). In horizontal loading test of Type I, Type II and Type III was 63.17, 57.80, and 60.97 kN/m, respectively. The deformation of the top layer in Type II was 1.5 times larger than in Type I and Type III. Consequently, the economic efficiency and strength performance were better in Type III than in Type I and Type II.
Nowadays, the importance of the information management of construction sites to achieve the goal of safety construction. This management uses the collaborated analysis of in-situ monitoring data and numerical analysis, especially of an earth retaining structures of excavation sites. In this paper, the fractal theory was applied to actually monitored data from various excavation sites to develop the alternative interpolation technique which could predict the displacement behavior of unknown location around the monitoring locations and the future behavior of the monitoring locations with the steps of excavation. Data, mainly from inclinometer, were collected from various sites where retaining structures were collapsed during construction period, as well as from normal sites with the characteristics of geology, excavation method etc. In the analyses, Hurst exponent (H) was estimated with monitored periods using the Rescaled range analysis (R/S analysis) method applying the H in simulation processes. As the results of the analyses, Hurst exponents were ranged from 0.7 to 0.9 and showed the positive correlation of H > 1/2. The simulation processes, then, with the Hurst exponent estimated by Rescaled range analysis method showed reliable results. In addition, it was also expected that the variation of Hurst exponents with the monitoring period could instruct the abnormal behavior of an earth retaining structures to directors or operators. Therefore it was concluded that fractal theory could be applied for predicting the lateral displacement of unknown location and the future behavior of an earth retaining structures to manage the safety of construction sites during excavation period.
