The insertion of steel braces has become a common technique to limit the deformability of steel framed buildings subjected to wind loads. However, when this technique is inadequate to keep floor accelerations within acceptable levels of human comfort, dampers placed in series with the steel braces can be adopted. To check the effectiveness of braces equipped with viscoelastic (VEDs) or friction dampers (FRDs), a numerical investigation is carried out focusing attention on a three-bay fifteen-storey steel framed building with K-braces. More precisely, three alternative structural solutions are examined for the purpose of controlling wind-induced vibrations: the insertion of additional diagonal braces; the insertion of additional diagonal braces equipped with dampers; the insertion of both additional diagonal braces and dampers supported by the existing K-braces. Additional braces and dampers are designed according to a simplified procedure based on a proportional stiffness criterion. A dynamic analysis is carried out in the time domain using a step-by-step initial-stress-like iterative procedure. Along-wind loads are considered at each storey assuming the time histories of the wind velocity, for a return period $T_r=5$ years, according to an equivalent wind spectrum technique. The behaviour of the structural members, except dampers, is assumed linear elastic. A VED and an FRD are idealized by a six-element generalized model and a bilinear (rigid-plastic) model, respectively. The results show that the structure with damped additional braces can be considered, among those examined, the most effective to control vibrations due to wind, particularly the floor accelerations. Moreover, once the stiffness of the additional braces is selected, the VEDs are slightly more efficient than the FRDs, because they, unlike the FRDs, dissipate energy also for small amplitude vibrations.

To observe the rail-slab interaction in continuous welded railway(CWR) bridge when earthquake occurs, additional axial rail stresses and relative longitudinal displacements between rail and bridge deck were calculated with input of various load combinations and 3 different types of seismic loads to an analytical model. As results of analysis, it can be found that standard response spectrum proposed by Korea Rail(KR) network authority for earthquake design showed less additional axial rail stresses than allowable levels, but greater relative longitudinal displacement between rail and bridge deck, which means that adjustment of relative longitudinal displacement within a standard level is much more difficult than axial train stress. Additionally, if a large-scaled earthquake as occurred at Kobe, Japan comes up, then both of additional axial rail stress and relative displacement in rail-bridge deck may exceed allowable levels, which indicates to make proper design guides against sudden earthquake occurrence.

This paper presents spectral element formulation which approximates Lamb wave propagation by PZT transducers bonded on a thin plate. A two layer beam model under 2-D plane strain condition is introduced to simulate high-frequency dynamic responses induced by a piezoelectric (PZT) layer rigidly bonded on a base plate. Mindlin-Herrmann and Timoshenko beam theories are employed to represent the first symmetric and anti-symmetric Lamb wave modes on a base plate, respectively. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and 1-D linear piezoelectricity are used to model the electro-mechanical behavior of a PZT layer. The equations of motions of a two layer beam model are derived through Hamilton's principle. The necessary boundary conditions associated with the electro-mechanical properties of a PZT layer are formulated in the context of dual functions of a PZT layer as an actuator and a sensor. General spectral shape functions of response field and the associated boundary conditions are obtained through equations of motions converted into frequency domain. Detailed spectrum element formulation for composing the dynamic stiffness matrix of a two layer beam model is presented as well. The validity of the proposed spectral element is demonstrated through numerical examples.

Among non-invasive blood glucose detection technologies, the optical technique is a method that uses light reflection, absorption, and scattering characteristics when passing through a biological medium. It reduces pain or discomfort in measurement and has no risk of infection. So it is becoming a major flow of blood glucose detection research. Among them, near-infrared spectroscopy has a disadvantage in that the complexity increases when analyzing signals detected due to interferences between proteins and acids that share a similar absorption function with blood glucose molecules. In this study, a non-invasive sensor system with multiple near-infrared bands was designed and manufactured to alleviate the deterioration of blood glucose detection function that may occur due to skin absorption of near-infrared rays. A blood survey was conducted to verify the system, and the degree of blood glucose response in the blood was collected as spectral data, and the results of this study were quantitatively verified in terms of correlation between the data and blood glucose.
The Real-time Analysis for Particle-transport and In-situ Detection (RAPID) Code System, developed based on the Multi-stage Response-function Transport (MRT) methodology, enables real-time simulation of nuclear systems such as reactor cores, spent nuclear fuel pools and casks, and sub-critical facilities. This paper presents the application of a novel fission matrix-based burnup methodology to the well-characterized JSI TRIGA Mark II research reactor. This methodology allows for calculation of nuclear fuel depletion by combination and interpolation of RAPID's burnup dependent fission matrix (FM) coefficients to take into account core changes due to burnup. The methodology is compared to experimentally validated Serpent-2 Monte Carlo depletion calculations. The results show that the burnup methodology for RAPID (bRAPID) implemented into RAPID is capable of accurately calculating the keff burnup changes of the reactor core as the average discrepancies throughout the whole burnup interval are 37 pcm. Furthermore, capability of accurately describing 3D fission source distribution changes with burnup is demonstrated by having less than 1% relative discrepancies compared to Serpent-2. Good agreement is observed for axially and pin-wise dependent fuel burnup and nuclear fuel nuclide composition as a function of burnup. It is demonstrated that bRAPID accurately describes burnup in areas with high gradients of neutron flux (e.g. vicinity of control rods). Observed discrepancies for some isotopes are explained by analyzing the neutron spectrum. This paper presents a powerful depletion calculation tool that is capable of characterization of spent nuclear fuel on the fly while the reactor is in operation.

The evolution of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and the rise of large language models (LLM) like ChatGPT have paved the way for specialized question-answering (QA) systems tailored to specific domains. This study outlines a system harnessing the power of LLM in conjunction with document search algorithms to interpret and address user inquiries using documents from the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). Initially, the system refines multiple documents for optimized search and analysis, breaking the content into managable paragraphs suitable for the language model's processing. Each paragraph's content is converted into a vector via an embedding model and archived in a database. Upon receiving a user query, the system matches the extracted vectors from the question with the stored vectors, pinpointing the most pertinent content. The chosen paragraphs, combined with the user's query, are then processed by the language generation model to formulate a response. Tests encompassing a spectrum of questions verified the system's proficiency in discerning question intent, understanding diverse documents, and delivering rapid and precise answers.

Many RC building structures of multiple uses constructed in Korea have the Irregularities of torsion and soft story at bottom stories simultaneously. Seismic design codes generally require dynamic analysis and to take into account the effect or earthquake excitations in the orthogonal direction using the approximate methods of 100/30 and SRSS for type of building structures. And ail buildings should be designed to be safe in any direction of earthquake input. But, most of designers have difficulty in considering the orthogonal and directional effect of earthquake. The objective of the study stated herein is to verily 1) the effect of the choice of the reference axes on the seismic design member forces by comparing the analytical results on member forces using the principal axes suggested by Wilson and the global axes generally adopted in design office, 2) the validity or the 100/30 and SRSS methods by comparing the member forces obtained through linear elastic time history analysis with those obtained through using response spectrum analysis and 100/30 (or SRSS) methods. Based on the observations on the analytical results, it is concluded as follows; 1) The values of member forces by principal axes can be about $15\%$ smaller than those by the global axes in the example structure. 2) Though the values of member forces given by time history analysis are generally within the peak values predicted by 100/30 and SRSS methods, many member force vectors $(P,\;M_y,\;and\;M_z)$ by lime history analysis were located outside the boundaries predicted by the approximate method such as the 100/30 method.

The acceleration levels and durations of seismic inputs for nuclear power plant design are surveyed. Among those inputs, two artificial acceleration time histories with same acceleration level and duration are selected and their characteristics are studied by calculating response spectra and spectrum intensity. The selected time histories which have the duration of 24 sec. satisfy the design response spectra of US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide 1. 60. One of the selected time histories is improved to have the duration of 15 sec. without significant changes in the other characteristics. A case study of a plane model with 3 lumped masses is done using three time histories, i.e, two selected and one improved time histories. It is found that the improved curve gives almost the same results as the original one and reduces the computer time by about half, whereas two selected time histories give the results with same trend but much different magnitudes each other. It is claimed, however, that the improved time history is not the optimal one, but very economical in practical applications.
Processing of collagen from yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) abdominal skins was optimized by response surface methodology and central composite design. The values of independent variables at optimal conditions were NaOH concentration: 0.5 N, NaOH treatment time: 36.2 hr, pepsin concentration: 1:4.9 ratio (0.245%, w/v), and digestion time: 48.1 hr, respectively. The collagen content estimated under optimal conditions was 33.1%, and the actual experimental collagen content was 32.3%. Physicochemical properties of collagen from yellowfin tuna abdominal skin were investigated by amino acids analysis, SDS-PAGE, FT-IR, viscosity and denaturation temperature. Amino acids content of the collagen was 21.0%. SDS-PAGE pattern of the collagen showed two different $\alpha$-chain (${\alpha}_1$- and ${\alpha}_2$- chain), $\beta$-component and $\gamma$-component. The spectrum of FT-IR of the collagen showed wavenumber at 3,434, 1,650, 1,542 and $1,235\;cm^{-1}$ representing the regions of amide A, I, II and III, respectively. Relative viscosity of the collagen decreased continuously on heating up to $32^{\circ}C$, and the rate of decrease was retarded in the temperature range of $35-50^{\circ}C$. Denaturation temperature (Td) of the collagen solution (0.06%, w/v) was $31^{\circ}C$ and was lower than calf skin collagen ($35^{\circ}C$).
The objective of this paper is to study arelationship between maximum response and its standard deviation of rotational shells that are subjected to uneven settlements. For this, the ratio, .eta, of the maximum response to standard deviation and it's approximate, .eta./sub apr/, are investigated by stochastic methods. Also, an equation for .eta./sub apr/, that is a function of predominant harmonic number is suggested. The settlements are represented by the Fourier series. Each term in the series contains two coefficients; the amplitude and the phase angle. It is assumed that phase angles are random variables and amplitudes are deterministic. To investigate the characteristics of .eta. and .eta./sub apr/, 100 phase angles for two types of artificial amplitudes spectra are used in the analysis. .eta. and .eta./sub apr/, are almost constant regardless of amplitude type, position of a shell or type of responses; they fall into from 2.0 to 2.5. .eta./sub apr/ is always close to .eta., but tends to be somewhat greater. It may be concluded that a maximum responses of rotational shells subjected to uneven settlements are .eta./sub apr/ (about 2.5) times of its standard deviation. It is considered that this result is used when we design rotational shell structures subjected to differential settlements.
