  • The location template matching (LTM) method is a technique of identifying an impact location on a structure, and requires a certain measure of similarity between two time signals. In general, the correlation coefficient is widely used as the measure of similarity, while the group delay based method is recently proposed to improve the accuracy of the impact localization. Another possible measure is the frequency response assurance criterion (FRAC), though this has not been applied yet. In this paper, these three different measures of similarity are examined comparatively by using experimental data in order to understand the properties of these measures of similarity. The comparative study shows that the correlation coefficient and the FRAC give almost the same information while the group delay based method gives the shape oriented information that is best suitable for the location template matching method.

  • This paper presents an extended state observer (ESO) based direct torque control (DTC) for use in induction motor systems to handle the issues of time delays, load torque disturbances and parameter uncertainties. Direct torque control offers an excellent torque response and it does not require a proportion integration (PI) controller in the current loop. However, a PI controller is still adopted in the outer speed loop to generate the torque reference value, which is a slow method. An ESO based compound control scheme is proposed to improve the response rate and accuracy of the torque reference signal, especially when load torque is injected. In addition, the time delay problem is analyzed and compensated for in this paper to reduce torque ripples. The proposed disturbance compensation technique based direct control scheme is shown to have good performance both in the transient and stable states via simulations and experimental results.

  • Variable wireless channel is a big challenge for real-time video applications, and the rate adaptation of realtime video streaming becomes a hot topic. Intra-video coding is important for high-quality video communication and industrial video applications. In this paper, we proposed a novel adaptive scheme for real-time video transmission with intra-only coding over a wireless network. The key idea of this scheme is to estimate the instantaneous remaining capacity of the network to adjust the quality of the next several video frames, which not only can keep low queuing delay and ensure video quality, but also can respond to bandwidth changes quickly. We compare our scheme with three different schemes in the video transmission system. The experimental results show that our scheme has higher bandwidth utilization and faster bandwidth change response, while maintaining low queuing delay.

  • Since all the poles of the open circuit voltage transfer function of the trigonometric, linear, passive RC circuits exist on the negative real axis of s-plane, its transient response to the unit step input is monotonic. This satisfies the necessary conditions for the applicability of Elmore's method which had been developed originally for the transient analysis of lumped circuit in computing the rise time and delay time of the trigonometric distributed RC circuits. This paper describes the computing method of rise and delay times of the trigonometric distributed RC circuit. The analysis shows that the transient response of this kind circuit depends only upon the time constant and distance angle $\theta$. As $\theta$ is increased, the rise and delay titles are increased non-linearly.

  • The aim of the study is to provide fundamental information for the development of magneticfluid actuator. To achieve the aim, the force and dynamic characteristics of magenticfluid are investigated by experiment for the various of tube diameter, height and position of magneticfluid column in magneticfield according to supplied voltage of solenoid coil, wave form and frquency. From this study, actuating force of magneticfluid is generated by magneticfield. The magnitude of force increases as the intensity of magneticfield becomes strong and the center of magneticfield becomes lower than the center of magneticfluid column. And the force of magneticfluid relates to the volume of magneticfluid more than the height and diameter. The response delay time decreases as the height of magmeticfluid more than the height and diameter. The response delay time decrease as the height of magneticfluid column becomes longer and the center of magneticfield becomes lower than the center of magniticfluid column. But, the approaching time increases as supplied voltage becomes higher and the center of magneticfiled becomes higher than the center of magniticfluid column. The frequency generating maximum force is 1Hz and the critical frequency is about 4Hz.

  • In order to classify the groundwater recharge characteristics in an urban area, a time series analysis of groundwater level data was performed. For this study, the daily groundwater level data from 35 monitoring wells were collected for 3 years (Fig. 1). The use of the cross-correlation function (CCF), one of the time series analysis, showed both the close relationship between rainfall and groundwater level change and the lag time (delay time) of groundwater level fluctuation after a rainfall event. Based on the result of CCF, monitored wells were classified into two major groups. Group I wells (n=10) showed a fast response of groundwater level change to rainfall event, with a delay time of maximum correlation between rainfall and groundwater level near 1 to 7 days. On the other hand, the delay time of 17-68 days was observed from Group II wells (n=25) (Fig. 1). The fast response in Group I wells is possibly caused by the change of hydraulic pressure of bedrock aquifer due to the rainfall recharge, rather than the direct response to rainfall recharge.

  • In this paper, the design of a channel filter and its group-delay-and-amplitude equalizer is carried out for the Ka-band satellite transponder subsystem. The 8th order dual-mode filter is employed for high selectivity around the band-edges with an elliptic-integral function response and has an in-line configuration. The 2-pole, reflection-type, group-delay equalizer is designed and manufactured to reduce the group-delay and amplitude variation, which can be large for such a high order filter. It is noted that in both the filter and equalizer, adopting the dual-mode coupling mechanism leads to less mass and volume. Through measurement, the performance of the realized group-delay-equalized filter is shown to meet the equipment requirements and to be appropriate for the satellite input multiplexer.

  • In most physical processes, the transfer function includes time-delay, and in the general distributed control system using computer network, there exists inherent time-delay caused by the spatial separation between controllers and actuators. This work deals with the synthesis of a discrete-time controller for a nonlinear system and proposes a new effective method to compensate the influence of input time-delay. The controller is synthesized by using input/output linearization. Under the circumstance that input time-delay exists, the system response has more overshoot and tends to diverge. For these reasons, the controller has to produce future input value that will be needed for the system. In order to calculate the future input value, some predictors are adopted. Using the discretization via Euler's method, numerical simulations about the Van der Pol system are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

  • In most physical processes, the transfer function includes a time-delay, and in the general distributed control system using a computer network, an inherent time-delay exists due to the spatial separation between controllers and actuators. Under the circumstance where an input time-delay exits, the system response overshoots and tends to diverge. For this reasons described above, a controller design method is proposed for a discrete nonlinear system including input time-delay, which adopts the time-discretization using Taylor series. Controllers are synthesized using an input/output linearization method. Finally, several cases of the computer simulations were conducted, and the results validate the proposed methods.

  • A mathematical model dealing with a prey-predator system with disease in the prey is considered. The functional response of the predator is governed by a Hoilling type-2 function. Mathematical analysis of the model regarding stability and persistence has been performed. The effect of delay and diffusion on the above system is studied. The role of diffusivity on stability and persistence criteria of the system has also been discussed.
