In computer simulation models the output from the computer code is often deterministic, i.e., running the code twice with the same values for the input variables would give the same output. It is discussed why the response surface method with polynomial approximation for the true response function is a good approximation to the computer experiments model. A sequential strategy to find the proper reduced quadratic polynomial model is illustrated with a case study in the military war game computer simulation model.
A micro-pressure wave is generated by the high-speed train which enters a tunnel, and it causes explosive noise and vibration at the exit. It is known that train speed, train-tunnel area ratio, nose slenderness and nose shape mainly influence on generating micro-pressure wave. So it is required to minimize it by searching optimal values of such train shape factors and tunnel condition. In this study, response surface model, one of approximation models, is used to perform optimization effectively and analyze sensitivity of design variables. Owen's randomized orthogonal array and D-optimal Design are used to construct response surface model. In order to increase accuracy of model, stepwise regression is selected. Finally SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) optimization algorithm is used to minimize the maximum micro-pressure wave by using built approximation model.

The light-weight design of UTM (Urban Transit Maglev)-02 car-body frames are performed, based on initial configuration. The thicknesses of fourteen sub-structures are defined as design variables and the loading condition is considered according to weight of sub-structures, electronic and pneumatic modules and passengers. For efficient and robust process of design optimization, objective function and constraints are approximated by response surface approximation. Structural analysis is performed at some sampling points to construct the approximated objective function and constraints composed of design variables. Design space is changed to find many optimal candidates and best optimal design can be found eventually. The Matlab Optimization Toolbox is used to find optimal value and sensitivity analysis about each design variable is also performed.
A response surface method(RSM) is utilized for structural optimization and implemented on a parametric CAD platform. Once an approximation of the performance function is made, no formal design sensitivity analysis is necessary. The approximation gives the designer the sensitivity information and furthermore intuition on the performance functions. The scheme for the design of experiment chosen for the RSM has a large influence on the accuracy of converged solutions and the amount of computation. The D-optimal design criterion as implemented in this paper is found efficient for the structural optimization. The program is developed on a parametric CAD platform and tested using several shape design problems of such as a torque arm and a belt clip. It is observed that the RSM used provides a faster convergence than other approximation methods for design sensitivity.

The doctor blade is equipped in a toner cartridge and is a device to maintain the uniform thickness of a toner by controlling the pressure on the developing roller. The contact pressure between the developing roller and the doctor blade is one of the significant factors for image quality and durability of toner cartridge. The purpose of this study is to develop approximation model in order to minimize the time and cost which are needed much required in making optimal design of the doctor blade. Central composite design was used for the design of experiment and response surface design was used for approximation. The data for contact pressure were acquired through finite element analysis and data of image density and toner weight were acquired through experiment. The approximation model developed in this study has presented very high fitness.

Joint stiffnesses can affect the vibrational characteristics of car body structures and, therefore, should be included in vehicle system models. In this paper, a numerical approximation of joint stiffness is presented for considering joint flexibility of thin walled beam jointed structures. Using the proposed method, it is possible to optimize joint structures considering the change of section shapes in vehicle structures. The numerical approximation of joint stiffnesses is derived using the RSM(Response Surface Method) in terms of beam section properties. The study shows that joint stiffnesses can be effectively determined in designing vehicle structure.

The geometry of engineering systems affects their performances. For this reason, the shape of engineering systems needs to be optimized in the initial design stage. However, engineering system design problems consist of multi-objective optimization and the performance analysis using commercial code or numerical analysis is generally time-consuming. To solve these problems, many engineers perform the optimization using the approximation model (response surface). The Response Surface Method (RSM) is generally used to predict the system performance in engineering research field, but RSM presents some prediction errors for highly nonlinear systems. The major objective of this research is to establish an optimal design method for multi-objective problems and confirm its applicability. The proposed process is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of response surface, and optimization process. To reduce the time for performance analysis and minimize the prediction errors, the approximation model is generated using the Backpropagation Artificial Neural Network (BPANN) which is considered as Neuro-Response Surface Method (NRSM). The optimization is done for the generated response surface by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Through case studies of marine system and ship structure (substructure of floating offshore wind turbine considering hydrodynamics performances and bulk carrier bottom stiffened panels considering structure performance), we have confirmed the applicability of the proposed method for multi-objective side constraint optimization problems.

Gradient-based optimization methods are inefficient in applications which require expensive function evaluations, and useless in applications where objective and/or constraint functions are 'noisy' due to modeling and cumulative numerical inaccuracy since gradient evaluation results cannot be reliable. Moreover, it is difficult to be integrated with commercial analysis software, and they cannot be employed when only experimental analysis results are available. In this research an optimization program based on a response surface method has been developed to overcome the aforementioned difficulties. Various methods for design of experiments and new proposed approximation models are implemented in the program. The effectiveness of the optimization program is tested on several test problems and results are discussed.

Engineering system problems consist of multi-objective optimisation and the performance analysis is generally time consuming. To optimise the system concerning its performance, many researchers perform the optimisation using an approximation model. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is usually used to predict the system performance in many research fields, but it shows prediction errors for highly nonlinear problems. To create an appropriate metamodel for marine systems, Lee (2015) compares the prediction accuracy of the approximation model, and multi-objective optimal design framework is proposed based on a confirmed approximation model. The proposed framework is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of approximation model, and optimisation. The major objective of this paper is to confirm the applicability/usability of the proposed optimal design framework and evaluate the prediction accuracy based on sensitivity analysis. We have evaluated the proposed framework applicability in derrick structure optimisation considering its structural performance.
Weight minimization of double-deck train carbody is imperative to reduce cost and extend life-time of train. It is required to decide 36 thickness of aluminum extruded panels. However, the design variables are two many to tract. moreover, one execution of structural analysis of double-deck carbody is time-consuming. Therefore, we adopt approximation technique to save computational cost of optimization process. Response surface model is used to apporximate static response of double-deck carbody. To obtain plausible response surface model, orthogonal array is empolyed as design of experiment(DOE). Design improvement by approximate model-based optimization is described. Accuracy and efficiency of optimization by using response surface model are discussed.
