The Primary Production of phytoplanktons produces organic matter in high concentration in eutrophicated Hakata Bay, Japan, even during the winter season in spite of low water temperature. Phytoplanktons are considered to have any biological capabilities to keep activities of photosynthesis under the unfavorable conditions, and this affects water quality of the bay. In this study, seasonal variations in primary production efficiency were predicted by using a simple box-type ecosystem model, which introduced the concept of efficiency for absorption of solar radiation energy in relation to growth of phytoplanktons under the low solar radiation intensity. According to the simulation result of primary production, it was organic pollution comes from dissolved organic carbon (DOC) throughout the year, DOC of which is originated from the primary production of phytoplanktons on biological response of the seasonal variation of ambient conditions.

Since the 1960's, exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) has been used effectively in spark ignition(SI) engines to control the exhaust emissions of the oxides of nitrogen(NOx). The most important requirements for the application of EGR systems to conventional SI engines are controllable flow rate and good dynamic response. In order to evaluate the characteristics of the electronic EGR valve, a test bench which is consisted of blower, heater, air flow meter and driving unit for electronic EGR valve was set up to simulate engine operating conditions. During the tests, the valve actuation parameters were controlled and the valve lifts and flow rates were measured to infer the characteristics of EGR valve. The results confirmed the capabilities of mathematical analysis and it seems that the correction for the valve lift and potentiometer output is necessary to achieve precise control of EGR rates.
This paper examines the seismic responses of a reinforced concrete (RC) frame core-tube building with pre-pressed spring self-centering energy dissipation (PS-SCED) braces. The PS-SCED brace system consists of friction devices for energy dissipation, pre-pressed combination disc springs for self-centering and tube members as guiding elements. A constitutive model of self-centering flag-shaped hysteresis for PS-SCED brace is developed to better simulate the seismic responses of the RC frame core-tube building with PS-SCED braces, which is also verified by the tests of two braces under low cyclic reversed loading. Results indicate that the self-centering and energy dissipation capabilities are well predicted by the proposed constitutive model of the PS-SCED brace. The structure with PS-SCED braces presents similar peak story drift ratio, smaller peak acceleration, smaller base shear force and much smaller residual deformations as compared to the RC frame core-tube building with bucking-restrained braces (BRBs).

In this study, a frequency domain model updating method is presented using power spectral density (PSD) data. It uses the sensitivity of PSD function with respect to the unknown structural parameters through a decomposed form of transfer function. The stiffness parameters are captured with high accuracy through solving the sensitivity equations utilizing the least square approach. Using numerically noise polluted data, the model updating results of a truss model prove robustness of the method against measurement and mass modelling errors. Results prove the capabilities of the method for parameter estimation using highly noise polluted data of low ranges of excitation frequency.
The emerging peer-to-peer (P2P) model has recently gained a significant attention due to its high potential of sharing various resources among networked users. Super-peer unstructured P2P systems have been found very effective by dividing the peers into two layers, super-peer and edge peer. Super peer deal with all Queries instead of edge peers. The existing P2P systems assume all super peers have equal roles and capabilities. However, all super peers don't so that edge peers should select the best super peer in order to handle Queries well. In this paper, we suggest the ISP2P (Intelligent Super-peer based P2P) which allows to select the best super peer to the edge peers. We classify super peers according as the capacity of a edge peer to a super peer. We show that considering the quality of a edge peer to a super peer can improve the performance of the response time and bandwidth.
The paper describes the construction of global function approximation models for use in design optimization via global search techniques such as genetic algorithms. Two different approximation methods referred to as evolutionary fuzzy modeling (EFM) and neuro-fuzzy modeling (NFM) are implemented in the context of global approximate optimization. EFM and NFM are based on soft computing paradigms utilizing fuzzy systems, neural networks and evolutionary computing techniques. Such approximation methods may have their promising characteristics in a case where the training data is not sufficiently provided or uncertain information may be included in design process. Fuzzy inference system is the central system for of identifying the input/output relationship in both methods. The paper introduces the general procedures including fuzzy rule generation, membership function selection and inference process for EFM and NFM, and presents their generalization capabilities in terms of a number of fuzzy rules and training data with application to a three-bar truss optimization.
This paper proposes a new design of shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuated gripper for open mode operation. SMA can generate smooth muscle movements during actuation which make them potentially good contenders in designing grippers. The principle of the shape memory alloy gripper is to convert the linear displacement of the SMA wire actuator into the angular displacement of the gripping jaw. Steady state analysis is performed to design the wire diameter of the bias spring for a known SMA wire. The gripper is designed to open about an angle of $22.5^{\circ}$ when actuated using pulsating electric current from a constant current source. The safe operating power range of the gripper is determined and verified theoretically. Experimental evaluation for the uncontrolled gripper showed a rotation of $19.97^{\circ}$. Forced cooling techniques were employed to speed up the cooling process. The gripper is simple and robust in design (single movable jaw), easy to fabricate, low cost, and exhibits wide handling capabilities like longer object handling time and handling wide sizes of objects with minimum utilization of power since power is required only to grasp and release operations.
Stress-strain responses of weak-to-strong carbonate rocks used for tunnel construction were studied. The analysis of applicability of exponential stress-strain models based on Haldane's distribution function is presented. It is revealed that these exponential equations presented in transformed forms allow us to predict stress-strain relationships over the whole pre-failure strain range without mechanical testing of rock samples under compression using a press machine and to avoid measurements of axial failure strains for which relatively large values of compressive stress are required. In this study, only one point measurement (small strain at small stress) using indentation test and uniaxial compressive strength determined by a standard Schmidt hammer are considered as input parameters to predict stress-strain response from zero strain/zero stress up to failure. Observations show good predictive capabilities of transformed stress-stress models for weak-to-strong (${\sigma}_c$ <100 MPa) heterogeneous carbonate rocks exhibiting small (< 0.5 %), intermediate (< 1 %) and large (> 1 %) axial strains.

This paper addresses the dynamic modeling and closed-loop eigenvibration analysis of composite rotating pretwisted fan blade modeled as non-uniform thin-walled beam with bi-convex cross-section fixed at the certain presetting angle and incorporating piezoelectric induced damping capabilities. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as transverse shear, rotary inertia and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force field. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectiriccally induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and the beneficial effects upon the closed loop eigenvibration of the blade are highlighted.

A computer program, named NEO-PCBRG, for the analysis and design of prestressed con-crete(PSC) bridges was developed using the finite element method. NEO-PCBRG can predict the response of PSC bridges throughout the various stages of construction and service. NEO-PCBRG has both pre- and post-processing capabilities. Pre-processing refers to all the neces- sary steps required to prepare a virtual prototype, more commonly termed a varied model for analysis. Post-processing here stands for the step in which the results from the analysis are reviewed and interpreted. In order to allow for the easy and convenient execution of the entire procedure, NEO-PCBRG was developed using computer graphics in the Visual Basic pro- gramming language. In conclusion, this study presents a new software architecture for analy-sis using the user-oriented design technique.
