Purpose: This study examined the effects of Vojta therapy on the respiratory function in young male smokers. Methods: Three subjects were tested using the ABA design for Single-subject Experimental Research Design. This study was conducted with the baseline, intervention, and follow-up phase. Intervention was conducted three to four times a week for 20 minutes per times and a total of 25 sessions. The respiratory function was measured using a Spirometer. Results: The results of Forced Vital Capacity and Forced Expiratory Volume at one second for all subjects showed improvements in the intervention phase over the baseline phase. In the follow-up phase, the improved ability was still maintained or slightly reduced. Conclusion: Vojta therapy used on young male smokers was effective in both FVC and FEV1. In other words, the Vojta therapy worked effectively in improving the respiratory function. In future studies, it is necessary to have a control group and increase the number of trials in order to generalize the effect of Vojta therapy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether changes in electromyography (EMG) activations of spinal stability muscles with respiratory demand change were due to changes in respiratory demand or in postural demand. Methods: Forty healthy subjects (19male, 21female, $20.8{\pm}1.9$years old) performed quiet breathing and four different forced respiratory maneuvers (FRM) (Pulsed Lip Breathing, Diaphragmatic Breathing, Combination breathing, and respiratory muscle endurance training breathing) while in sitting and standing positions. EMG data for four muscles (TrA/IO, EO, RA, and ES) were collected and filtered using a band pass filter (20~200Hz) and a notch filter (60, 120, 180Hz). Results: There were no significant differences on percentage of change on %MVIC between QB and FRM (PLB, CB, DB, and RMET) between positions (all p>0.05).
Purpose: Respiratory is an essential vital component for conservation of life in human, which is controlled by respiratory muscles and its related neuromuscular regulation. The purpose of this study is to assess lung capacity and respiratory pressure in healthy children, and to investigate relationship and predictability between respiratory pressure and other related respiratory functions. Methods: A total of 31 healthy children were recruited for this study. Demographic information and respiratory related factors were assessed in terms of body surface area (BSA), chest mobility, lung capacity, and respiratory pressure. Correlation between respiratory pressure and the rested variables was analyzed, and multiple regression using the stepwise method was performed for prediction of respiratory muscle strength, in terms of respiratory pressure as the dependent variable, and demographic and other respiratory variables as the independent variable. Results: According to the results of correlation analysis, respiratory pressure showed significant correlation with age (r=0.62, p<0.01), BSA (r=0.80, p<0.01), FVC (r=0.80, p<0.01), and FEV1 (r=0.70, p<0.01). In results of multiple regression analysis using the backward elimination method, BSA and FVC were included as significant factors of the predictable statistical model. The statistical model showed a significant explanation power of 71.8%. Conclusion: These findings suggest that respiratory pressure could be a valuable measurement tool for evaluation of respiratory function, because of significant relationship with physical characteristics and lung capacity, and that BSA and FVC could be possible predictable factors to explain the degree of respiratory pressure. These findings will provide useful information for clinical assessment and treatment in healthy children as well as those with pulmonary disease.
Background : Pulmonary rehabilitation, called pulmonary rehab or PR, is a broad program that helps improve the well-being of people who have chronic (ongoing) breathing problems. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effects of the upper abdominal exercise and balloon blow-up on the abdominal muscle strength and Respiratory ability for 20's adults. Method : Recruited Subjects were healthy students attending H university. Twenty-one subjects who agreed to participate in this study were randomly assigned to 3 groups; I group applied upper abdominal exercise, IIgroup applied balloon blow-up, III group applied both upper abdominal exercises and balloon blow-ups. Upper abdominal muscle exercises was applied supine position and $30^{\circ}{\sim}40^{\circ}$ in the upper body lift braced for about 3 seconds, and balloon blow-ups was performed 10 times a day. The exercise programs were performed three times a week for 5 weeks. Results: After 5 weeks of exercises, all three groups were comparable with abdominal muscle strength and respiratory ability. Subjects in upper abdominal exercise group, balloon blow-ups group, and upper abdominal exercises and balloon blow-ups group had significantly increased the average of abdominal muscle strength(p<.05) The statistical comparison among the groups indicated that there was a signigicant increase in respiratory ability. In comparison of abdominal muscle strength and respiratory ability, there were no significant differences among 3 groups. Conclusions: These findings suggest that upper abdominal exercises and balloon blow-ups may have a significant impact in abdominal muscle strength and respiratory ability.
Purpose: This study is not a fragmentary study on characteristics of respiratory synergist when breathing, however it was intended to determine the effect of currently available respiratory exercise and to provide basic clinical information through investigation of oxygen demand and respiratory synergist that mobilizes for respiration during application of respiratory exercise. Methods: Experimental group I was selected from second grade of severity classification of GOLD, which has the highest percentage among patients with COPD, and experimental group II was selected from third grade of severity classification as a clinical sampling. After respiration pursing up lips and diaphragm respiration exercise were mediated together for six weeks, activity of respiratory muscles and oxygen saturation were measured and analyzed. Results: In comparison of change of respiratory synergist and oxygen saturation, activity of respiratory synergist in sternocleidomastoid muscle and scalene muscle showed a meaningful decrease in experimental group I. And, in comparison of change of respiratory synergist and oxygen saturation, activity of respiratory synergist in rectus abdominis muscle showed a meaningful increase in experimental group II. In comparison of change of respiratory synergist and oxygen saturation, activity of respiratory synergist in sternocleidomastoid muscle, scalene muscle, and rectus abdominis muscle showed a meaningful difference between experimental groups. Conclusion: Respiratory synergists work mainly as agonist of chest and upper limbs. Therefore it is very important to lower mobilization of respiratory synergist when breathing. It is considered that a multilateral approach and continued clinical research for improvement of respiratory function for patients with COPD will be needed in the future.
Objective: The interest of clinicians is increasing due to the newly established medical insurance for pulmonary rehabilitation. Improvement of respiratory muscle strength and pulmonary function is an important factor in pulmonary rehabilitation, and this study aims to investigate the correlation between changes in respiratory muscle contraction thickness that can affect respiratory muscle strength and pulmonary function. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Methods: Thirty-one subjects (male=13, female=18) participated in this study. The respiratory muscle strength was measured by dividing it into inspiratory/forced expiratory muscles, and the pulmonary function was measured by forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC. To evaluate the respiratory muscle length increase, in resting and concentric contraction thickness of diaphragm, external/internal oblique, transverse abdominis, and rectus abdominis were measured by using ultrasonography. Results: Inspiratory muscle strength showed a significant correlation with the length increase of the inspiratory muscle (r=0.368~0.521, p<0.05), and forced expiratory muscle strength showed a significant correlation with length increase of forced expiratory muscle (r=0.356~0.455, p<0.05). However, pulmonary function was not correlated with the length increase of the respiratory muscle. Conclusions: In this study, a correlation between respiratory muscle strength and respiratory muscle length increase was confirmed, but no correlation with the pulmonary function was found. It is considered that the respiratory muscle strength can be improved by increasing the respiratory muscle thickness through appropriate respiratory muscle training.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of sensory integration therapy (SIT) on gross motor development and respiratory function of cerebral palsy children. The design of this study was one-group pre-and post-test design. Subjects of the study were arbitrarily chosen based on predetermined selection criteria among the cerebral palsy children who were treated as out-patients at one rehabilitation hospital in Kyunggi-do. The study was conducted between early April and late July in 2000. Twelve children were in the experimental group. A five-step SIT program was devised from a combination of SIT programs suggested by Ayres(1985) and Fink(1989), and an author-designed SIT program for cerebral palsy children. The experimental group was subjected to 20 to 30 minutes of SIT per session, two sessions a week for ten-week period. Collected data were statistically analyzed by SPSS PC for Wilcoxon signed rank test, and paired t-test. The results were as follows: 1. In gross motor development, post-experimental gross motor scores were higher compared to pre-experimental scores with statistical significance. 2. In respiratory function, post-experimental forced capacity vital scores were higher compared to pre-experimental scores with statistical significance. In conclusion, SIT was found to be effective in gross motor development and respiratory function. But, for the more effectiveness of SIT on gross motor development and respiratory function, further studies employing longer-time experiments are recommended.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing performance confidence by knowledge and experience of respiratory-assistant therapy in paramedic students. Methods: A descriptive survey study used a convenience sample comprising 387 students from September 15 to October 31, 2016. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and regression analysis. Results: Knowledge was statistically significant by college(3-year), acquired certification, and observation experience in respiratory-assistant therapy. Performance confidence was statistically significant by sex, academic grade($3.0{\leq}$), acquired certification, and observation and performance experience in respiratory-assistant therapy. There was a significant correlation between knowledge and acquired certification, clinical practice, and major satisfaction. There was a significant correlation between performance confidence and acquired certification, clinical practice, major satisfaction, and knowledge. Regression analysis revealed that performance confidence accounted for 22.9% of the variance by academic grade(3.0~3.99), acquired certification, and major satisfaction. Conclusion: For paramedic students in clinical practice and in-school classes, it is important to improve performance confidence by combining training instruction with experience and education of respiratory-assistant therapy.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of modified cervical exercise on respiratory functions in smartphone users with forward head posture. Methods: Thirty-three smartphone users with forward head posture participated in this study. Subjects were divided into three groups that performed modified cervical exercise one time a day (A group), two times a day (B group), and three times a day (C group). All subjects performed the exercise for four weeks, during which time respiratory functions were measured. Results: There were significant differences in respiratory functions such as forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume at one second, and maximal voluntary ventilation in the C group after four weeks (p<0.05). Moreover, the forced vital capacity differed among groups, and the post hoc test revealed a significant difference between A group and C group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that modified cervical exercise improved respiratory functions in smartphone users with forward head posture. These findings indicate that smartphone users with forward head posture should perform modified cervical exercise to build correct posture and respiratory functions.
