The information obtained from the analysis of respiratory muscle elecromyographic (EMG) activities provides a mean for studying muscular activity in relation to the ventilatory process. Thus, in order to comprehend the airflow pattern and its brain control, signal processing is required to characterize respiratory muscle activity. This paper presents a computerized method for the analysis of the electrical activity of the respiratory muscles of premature lambs, and focuses upon the automatic determination of respiratory timing points such as onset and cessation points of the burst activity. Based on experimental results, reliable timing points can be obtained using the proposed methodology.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons. The disorder causes muscle weakness and atrophy in airway muscles including pharyngeal, laryngeal and other respiratory muscles. The response to muscle realxant is also altered in patients with ALS. Because of the inherent muscle weakness and associated respiratory insufficiency, particular attentions are needed in anesthetic management of ALS patients. We used proper doses of inhalation anesthetics and opioids under EEG-entropy (electroencephalography-entropy)-monitoring without the use of muscle realxants in the anesthetic management of a patient with ALS. The patient early recovered and was discharged on the same day without any respiratory complications.

Purpose: Frequent desaturation due to immature incoordination of suck-swallow-breathing in preterm infants can influence multiple organs such as the heart, lungs, and brain, which can then affect growth and development. Most notably in preterm infants, feeding desaturation may even affect pulmonary function during gavage feeding. Because respiratory muscle activities may reflect the work required during respiration, we evaluated the differences in these activities between full-term and preterm infants with feeding desaturation, and investigated the correlations with clinical variables. Methods: Nineteen preterm infants with feeding desaturation (group 1) and 19 age-matched full-term infants (group 2) were evaluated. Oromotor function was evaluated using video recording. The root-mean-square (RMS) envelope of the electromyography signal was calculated to quantify the activities of muscles involved in respiration. The differences in RMS between both groups and the correlation with clinical variables including gestational age (GA), birth weight (BW), and Apgar scores (AS) at 1 and 5 minutes after birth were evaluated. Results: The RMS values of the diaphragm (RMS-D) and rectus abdominis (RMS-R) were significantly greater in group 1 compared to group 2, and the 1- and 5-min AS were significantly lower in group 1 compared to group 2. RMS-D and RMS-R were inversely correlated with GA, BW, 1- and 5-min AS in all infants. Conclusion: This study showed that respiratory muscle activities were augmented during feeding in preterm infants compared to full-term infants. Additionally, respiratory muscle activities were inversely correlated with all clinical variables.

Objective: The practice of breathing exercises involves altering the depth and frequency of respiration. Strengthening respiratory muscles plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health and well-being. The efficiency of the respiratory system affects not only physical activity but also various physiological processes including cardiovascular health, lung function, and cognitive abilities. The study evaluated the reliability of the developed device for inspiratory/expiratory training using pressure sensors and Bluetooth connectivity with a smartphone application. Design: Design & development research Methods: The research methodology involved connecting a custom-made respiratory sensor to an IMT-PEP BIC Breath device. Various pressure conditions were measured, and statistical analyses were performed to assess reliability and consistency. Results showed high Intraclass Coefficient Correlation (ICC) values for both inspiratory and expiratory pressures, indicating strong test-retest reliability. The device was designed for ease of use and wireless monitoring through a smartphone app. Results: This study conducted at expiratory pressure confirmed the proper operation of the IMT/PEP breathing trainer at the specified pressure setting in the product. The pressure sensor demonstrated high test-retest reliability with an ICC value of 0.999 for both expiratory and inspiratory pressure measurements. Conclusions: The developed respiratory training device measured and monitored inspiratory and expiratory pressures, demonstrating its reliability for respiratory training. The system could be utilized to record training frequency and intensity, providing potential benefits for patients requiring respiratory interventions. Further research is needed to assess the full potential of the device in diverse populations and applications.
Purpose: Respiratory is an essential vital component for conservation of life in human, which is controlled by respiratory muscles and its related neuromuscular regulation. The purpose of this study is to assess lung capacity and respiratory pressure in healthy children, and to investigate relationship and predictability between respiratory pressure and other related respiratory functions. Methods: A total of 31 healthy children were recruited for this study. Demographic information and respiratory related factors were assessed in terms of body surface area (BSA), chest mobility, lung capacity, and respiratory pressure. Correlation between respiratory pressure and the rested variables was analyzed, and multiple regression using the stepwise method was performed for prediction of respiratory muscle strength, in terms of respiratory pressure as the dependent variable, and demographic and other respiratory variables as the independent variable. Results: According to the results of correlation analysis, respiratory pressure showed significant correlation with age (r=0.62, p<0.01), BSA (r=0.80, p<0.01), FVC (r=0.80, p<0.01), and FEV1 (r=0.70, p<0.01). In results of multiple regression analysis using the backward elimination method, BSA and FVC were included as significant factors of the predictable statistical model. The statistical model showed a significant explanation power of 71.8%. Conclusion: These findings suggest that respiratory pressure could be a valuable measurement tool for evaluation of respiratory function, because of significant relationship with physical characteristics and lung capacity, and that BSA and FVC could be possible predictable factors to explain the degree of respiratory pressure. These findings will provide useful information for clinical assessment and treatment in healthy children as well as those with pulmonary disease.
Familial hypokalemic periodic paralysis is an autosomal-dominant channelopathy characterized by episodic muscle weakness with hypokalemia. The respiratory and cardiac muscles typically remain unaffected, but we report an atypical case of a family with hypokalemic periodic paralysis in which the affected members presented with frequent respiratory insufficiency during severe attacks. Molecular analysis revealed a heterozygous c.664 C>T transition in the sodium channel gene $SCN4A$, leading to an Arg222Trp mutation in the channel protein. The patients described here presented unusual clinical characteristics that included a severe respiratory phenotype, an incomplete penetrance in female carriers, and a different response to medications.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was carried out to review for the importance of breathing pattern training for the spinal stabilization. Methods : This is a literature study with books and thesis. Results : Breathing with normal respiratory mechanics has a potent role in neuro-musculo-skeletal system. The evaluation of respiratory mechanics should be a routine part of every physical examination. And respiratory mechanics must be intact for both normal posture and spinal stabilization to be possible. Conclusion : The spinal stabilization exercise with the breathing pattern training is more efficient therapeutic exercise program for the patient with neuro-musculo-skeletal system disorder.
Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether the abdominal muscles, which are the major lumbar stabilizers along with the respiratory muscles, are affected by smoking. We compared abdominal muscle activity between smokers and non-smokers during the sit-to-stand movement. Methods: A total of 28 healthy adult males (14 smokers and 14 non-smokers) in their 20s-30s voluntarily participated in the study. The subjects performed the sit-to-stand movement, and then their abdominal muscle activity was measured. The surface electromyography system was employed to measure the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) values of the subjects' rectus abdominis, external oblique abdominal, internal oblique abdominal, and transversus abdominis muscles. Then, the values were quantified into %MVIC. Results: The activity of the rectus abdominis muscle was higher in the smokers than in the non-smokers. Conversely, the activity of the internal oblique abdominal and transversus abdominis muscles, which are deep abdominal muscles, was higher in non-smokers than in smokers, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Smoking can inhibit the activity of smokers' deep abdominal muscles and increase the activity of their superficial muscles, thus making it detrimental to their musculoskeletal system.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between abdominal muscle strength and measures of respiratory function in stroke patients. Methods: The study participants comprised 17 (male: 12, female: 5) stroke patients hospitalized at W rehabilitation hospital in Busan, South Korea. Abdominal muscle strength was assessed using a digital manual dynamometer for 5 seconds contacting the sternal notch of the participants to bend the trunk. Respiratory function (forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, forced expiratory volume in one second/forced vital capacity, and peak expiratory flow) was assessed using a spirometer. The collected data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation analysis, and the significance level was set 0.05. Results: A statistically significant correlation was found between abdominal muscle strength and forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, and peak expiratory flow. However, abdominal muscle strength and forced expiratory volume in one second/forced vital capacity were not significantly correlated. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that there is a relationship between abdominal muscle strength and respiratory function. Exercise programs to strengthen the abdominal muscles are therefore necessary to improve respiratory function in stroke patients.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between being underweight and respiratory function indicators such as pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, and diaphragm thickness in normal adults without lung disease. METHODS: The participants in this experiment were thirty young adults. To compare the respiratory function between the underweight and normal weight individuals, 15 participants were selected from each of the underweight and normal weight groups based on body mass index. Respiratory function tests were conducted through pulmonary function tests and respiratory muscle strength tests. Diaphragm thickness was measure with ultrasonography, and physical characteristics were obtained from grip strength and waist circumference. An independent t-test was used to compare the averages of the parameters measured in the two groups. RESULTS: In the respiratory function tests between the two groups, statistically significant differences (p < .05) emerged in the ratio of the predicted forced vital capacity (%FVC), the ratio of the predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (%FEV1), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), and diaphragm thickness at the functional residual capacity (FRC). There was no statistically significant difference in the forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, maximal inspiratory pressure, diaphragm thickness at the total lung capacity, and thickening ratio (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Decreases in some variables of respiratory function, such as the %FVC, %FEV1, MEP, and diaphragm thickness at the FRC were observed in underweight subjects. However, it is difficult to determine whether it affected the overall respiratory function. Future studies are needed to clearly identify the relationship between being underweight and respiratory function.
