담배중요병해저항성에 관한 연구 특히 한국재래종에 대하여 (Studies on the disease resistance of tobacco varieties to Black shank, Black root rot Wild fire, Brown spot, CMV-Y and Blue mold -Disease resistance of Korean native varieties-)

  • 담배 각종병해저항성 품종육성의 기초자료를 얻기 위하여 우리나라 재래종에 대한 몇가지 병해에 대한 저항성검정을 하였다. (1) 역병에는 우방초, 오심엽초만이 중정도의 저항성이 있으며 수안초, 우설초, 광초 등이 그 다음이고 그 외품종은 모두 나병성이였다. DB 101, $H_2$, BY 4 등은 재래종보다 저항성이였다. (2) 흑근병에는 목기초, 우방초, 오심엽초가 중정도의 저항성이며 우설초, 수안초, 회초가 다음이며 향초는 BY 4만은 못하나 재래종중에서 가장 나병율이 높았다. (3) 야화병에는 대부분 나병율이 높은 편이나 흑초, 회초, 우방초가 약간 저항성이 인정되고 그 외품종은 거의 나병성이다. (4) 적성병에는 오심엽초가 고도의 저항을 엿보이며 우방초, 향초, 목기초 등이 중정도이고 광초, 우설초는 나병성이였다. 대조품종인 BY4나 Beinhart 1,000-1보다는 모두 나병율이 낮았다. (5) CMV-Y에 대하여서는 향초가 고도의 저항성이 인정되고 회초, 가자초가 저도이기는 하나 저항성이 있는 듯하다. (6) Blue mold병에 대에 하여는 공시품종 모두가 고도의 나병성임으로 이에 대한 저항성품종의 발굴이 절실히 요망된다.

Prevalence of chloramphenicol-resistant gene in Escherichia coli from water sources in aquaculture farms and rivers of Kuching, Northwestern Borneo

  • Antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli cases are increasing high especially in Southeast Asia. Illegal use of the antibiotic in the aquaculture farming may become the culprit of the outbreak and spread into environmental source. A study was conducted to: 1) detect the chloramphenicol (CAL)-resistant gene in E. coli isolated from three aquaculture farms and six rivers of northwestern Borneo and 2) investigate the correlation between cat gene with five common antibiotics used. Isolation of E. coli was done on Eosin methylene blue agar and characterized using indole, methyl red, Voges-Proskauer, citrate tests. E. coli isolates were subsequently tested for their susceptibility to five antibiotics commonly used in aqua-farming. The CAL-resistant E. coli were further analyzed for the presence of resistant genes (cat I, cat II, cat III, cat IV) using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. 42 bacterial colonies were isolated from a total of 80 individual water samples, 34 of which were identified as E. coli. Result showed 85.3% of the E. coli isolates were resistant to amoxicillin, 35.3% were resistant to tetracycline, 29.4% were resistant to CAL, 17.6% were resistant to nitrofurantoin and 8.8% were resistant to nalidixic acid. All of the 10 CAL resistant E. coli isolateswere detected with cat II genes; five isolates detected with cat IV genes; three isolates detected with cat III genes; and another two detected with cat I genes. Pearson correlation coefficient shows highly significant relationship between resistance pattern of CAL with amoxicillin; and CAL with tetracycline. Our findings provide the supplementary information of the CAL resistance gene distribution, thereby improving our understanding of the potential risk of antibiotic resistance underlying within this microbial ecosystem.

형질전환 연초의 복합바이러스 저항성

  • KF 116 was TMV resistant tobacco plant and KB 301 was PVY resistant plant transformed with TMV CP gene and PVY CP gene, respectively. These resistant plants were cross-fertilized and the 4 lines of the TMV-PVY resistant plants were selected from F1 hybrid plants. The rate of PVY-resistant plant in these hybrids was 100 percent and that of TMV-resistant plants including delay type was 90-98 percent at 4 weeks after virus inoculation. It was confirmed that the TMV and PVY CP genes were integrated into the genome of hybrid plants by genomic PCR, and Southern blot hybridization. The genome of F1 hybrid plants had one copy and 4 copies of PVY-CP gene and TMV-CP gene, respectively, and CaMV 35S promoters were not methylated, regardless of the difference symptom development to TMV.

Medical Management of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis

  • Drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) is still a major threat worldwide. However, recent scientific advances in diagnostic and therapeutic tools have improved the management of drug-resistant TB. The development of rapid molecular testing methods allows for the early detection of drug resistance and prompt initiation of an appropriate treatment. In addition, there has been growing supportive evidence for shorter treatment regimens in multidrug-resistant TB; and for the first time in over 50 years, new anti-TB drugs have been developed. The World Health Organization has recently revised their guidelines, primarily based on evidence from a meta-analysis of individual patient data (n=9,153) derived from 32 observational studies, and outlined the recommended combination and correct use of available anti-TB drugs. This review summarizes the updated guidelines with a focus on the medical management of drug-resistant TB.

소에서 분리(分離)한 Escherichia coli의 항생물질내성(抗生物質耐性) 및 전달성내성인자(傳達性耐性因子)의 분포(分布) (Susceptibility of Escherichia coli Isolated from Cattle to Some Antimicrobial Agents)

  • One hundred and fifty seven Escherichia coli strains isolated from 18 cattle (9 dairy cattle received penicillin, streptomycin (SM) or sulfadimethoxine for treatment of diseases and 9 Korean native cattle not received antibiotics) were studied for the drug resistance and distribution of R factors. Of 88 E. coli strains isolated from cattle not received antibiotics, only 1 strain was resistant to SM, but about 46 per cent of 69 E. coli strains isolated from cattle received antibiotics were resistant to SM, tetracycline (TC), ampicillin (AP), kanamycin (KM), chloramphenicol (CM), and sulfisomidine (Su), alone or in combination thereof. Of resistant strains, about 72% were resistant to three or more antibiotics, but 28% were found to singly resistant. The most frequent resistant pattern was triple resistance to AP, KM and Su (37.6%), and quadruple one to SM, TC, CM and Su (12.5%). About 28% of resistant strains carried R factors which were transferable to E. coli ML 1410 $NA^r$ by conjugation.

당근뿌리혹선충(Meloidogyne hapla)에 대한 저항성고추 선발 및 저항성기작 연구 (Screening Resistant Red Pepper Varieties to Meloidogyne hapla and their Resistance Mechanisms)

  • 당근뿌리혹선충(Meloidogyne hapla)에 대한 저항성품종을 선발하고자 175개 고추품종을 대상으로 조사하였다. 그 결과 재래종 15품종(IT 102794, 104806, 105516 등)과 도입종 2품종이 저항성이었고 재배품종 중에서는 홍탑고추, 강산고추, 홍실고추와 부강고추가 중도저항성이었다. 저항성반응을 보인 품종에서는 감수성인것에 비하여 선충의 침입수도 적었고 발육도 부진하였다. 또 에스테라제와 퍼옥시다제의 활력에서 저항성 고추품종의 뿌리는 감수성인 것에 비하여 현저히 높았다.

약수에서 分離한 大腸菌群의 일부 중금속 및 抗生劑耐性에 관한 연구 (Antibiotic and Heavy Metal Resistance of Coliform Bacteria Isolated from Mineral Water)

  • The purposes of this study were to find out the heavy metal and antibiotic resistant coliform bacteria from mineral water and the resistant factors. For the experiment, mineral water samples were taken from A area and B area during the period from march to July, 1988. The results of the experiment were as follows 1. From mineral water, eleven resistant coliforms and one susceptible coliform were isolated. 2. All resistant isolates harbored diverse plasmids of ranged ca. 14-54kb. 3. Susceptible coliform harbored a only plasmid of ca. 2.8 kb. 4. All resistant isolates harbored common size of plasmid of ca. 14kb. 5. As a result of the transformation and agarose gel electrophoresis experiments, resistant factor was R-plasmid. In conclusion, It is suggested that heavy metal contamination of mineral water is the selective pressure for the plasmid encoding the tolerance. Heavy metal resistance, in some case, is present with antibiotic resistance. Therefore, heavy metal contamination of mineral water induces antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Screening of Some Indigenous and Exotic Mulberry Varieties against Major Foliar Fungal and Bacterial Diseases

  • Fifty-six indigenous and twenty nine exotic mulberry varieties were screened against powdery mildew, Myrothecium leaf spot, Pseudocercospora leaf spot, sooty mold and bacterial leaf spot for a period of three years under field condition. The percent disease index (PDI) was recorded during peak season of the foliar diseases. Out of eighty-five varieties studied, ten varieties were highly resistant and eight were resistant to powdery mildew; six varieties were immune and seventy-eight varieties were highly resistant to Myrothecium leaf spot; sixty varieties were highly resistant and 21 were resistant to Pseudocercospora leaf spot; forty four varieties were highly resistant to sooty mold and two varieties were immune and fifty-eight were highly resistant to bacterial leaf spot. Lowest cumulatative disease index was observed in M. multicaulis (7.28) followed by Thailand lobed (7.85) and Italian mulberry (8.06).

생물학적 하수처리장에서 테트라싸이클린 저항 세균의 거동 (The Fate of Tetracycline Resistant Bacteria in Biological Wastewater Treatment Plants)

  • Tetracycline is one of the mostly used antibiotics around the world. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fate of two different types of tetracycline resistant bacteria in biological wastewater treatment plants. Tetracycline resistant enterics and heterotrophic bacteria were monitored under two different lab-scale experimental conditions. Tetracycline resistant enteric bacteria showed the lower percentages of total enteric bacteria and net specific growth rate in the monitored activated sludge system as compared to tetracycline resistant heterotrophic bacteria. Therefore, total enterics, potentially E.coli, might not be the best indicator microorganism for evaluating the antibiotic resistant bacteria in biological wastewater treatment plant.

  • MRSA, erythromycin-resistant S. pyogenes, penicillin non-susceptible pneumococci, PPNG, ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae, class C ${\beta}$-lactamase-producing E. coli, fluoroquinolone-resistant E. coli, aminoglycoside-resistant A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa are all prevalent in Korea, which suggest the presence of high levels of antimicrobial selective pressure and nosocomial spread of resistant bacteria. Rapid increase of VRE and emergence of fluoroquinolone-resistant gonococci and VIM-2 metallo-${\beta}$-lactamase-producing P. aeruginosa are recently observed new threats in Korea.
