Earthquakes can lead to substantial damage to buildings, with long-period ground motion being particularly destructive. The design of high-performance building structures has become a prominent focus of research. The double-story isolated structure is a novel type of isolated structure developed from base isolated structure. To delve deeper into the building performance of double-story isolated structures, the double-story isolated structure was constructed with the upper isolated layer located in different layers, alongside a base isolated structure for comparative analysis. Nonlinear elastoplastic analyses were conducted on these structures using different ground motion inputs, including ordinary ground motion, near-field impulsive ground motion, and far-field harmonic ground motion. The results demonstrate that the double-story isolated structure can extend the structural period further than the base isolated structure under three types of ground motions. The double-story isolated structure exhibits lower base shear, inter-story displacement, base isolated layer displacement, story shear, and maximum acceleration of the top layer, compared to the base isolated structure. In addition, the double-story isolated structure generates fewer plastic hinges in the frame, causes less damage to the core tube, and experiences smaller overturning moments, demonstrating excellent resistance to overturning and a shock-absorbing effect. As the upper isolated layer is positioned higher, the compressive stress on the isolated bearings of the upper isolated layer in the double-story isolated structure gradually decreases. Moreover, the compressive stress on the isolated bearings of the base isolated layer is lower compared to that of the base isolated structure. However, the shock-absorbing capacity of the double-story isolated structure is significantly increased when the upper isolated layer is located in the middle and lower section. Notably, in regions exposed to long-period ground motion, a double-story isolated structure can experience greater seismic response and reduced shock-absorbing capacity, which may be detrimental to the structure.
This study explored the feasibility of utilizing an SWCNT-coated fabric sensor for the development of a wearable motion sensing device. The extent of variation in electric resistance of the sensor material was evaluated by varying the fiber composition of the SWCNT-coated base fabrics, attachment methods, number of layers, and sensor width and length. 32 sensors were fabricated by employing different combinations of these variables. Using a custom-built experimental jig, the amount of voltage change in a fabric sensor as a function of the length was measured as the fabric sensors underwent loading-unloading test with induced strains of 30 %, 40 %, and 50 % at a frequency of 0.5 Hz. First-step analysis revealed the following: characteristics of the strain-voltage curves of the fabric sensors confirmed that 14 out of 32 sensors were evaluated as more suitable for measuring human joint movement, as they yield stable resistance values under tension-release conditions; furthermore, significantly stable resistance values were observed at each level of strain. Secondly, we analyzed the averaged maximum, minimum, and standard deviations at various strain levels. From this analysis, it was determined that the two-layer sensor structure and welding attachment method contributed to the improvement of sensing accuracy.
Based on the equivalent uniform stress concept Presented by Seed and Idriss, sinusoidal cyclic loads which simplified earthquake loads have been applied in evaluating the liquefaction resistance strength experimentally. However, the liquefaction resistance strength of soil based on the equivalent uniform stress concept can not exactly reflect the dynamic characteristics of the irregular earthquake motion. The liquefaction assessment method which was invented by using the equivalent uniform stress concept is suitable for the severe earthquake region such as Japan or USA, so the proper method to Korea is needed. In this study, estimation of the resistance to liquefaction was conducted by applying real earthquake loading to the cyclic triaxial test. From the test results, the characteristics of the fine sand under moderate earthquake were analyzed and compared with the results under strong earthquakes. Typically real earthquake loads used in this study are divided into two types - impact type and vibration type. Furthermore, results of the liquefaction resistance strength based on the equivalent uniform stress concept and tile concept using real earthquake loading were compared.
Recently, the design of commercial ships with less green-house gas is one of great interests in naval architecture fields. Ship designers are asked to find optimum hull forms with minimum resistance in ocean waves. The accurate computation of added resistance, therefore, is getting more important for the prediction of power increase in random ocean waves. This study focuses on the numerical computation of added resistance on ships with Ax-bow shapes which are designed to reduce added resistance. To this end, the time-domain Rankine panel methods based on weakly-nonlinear and weak-scatterer approaches are applied, which can reflect the influence of above-still-water bow shape. As computational models, KCS and KVLCC2 hull forms are considered. Each ship is combined with the three types of Ax-bow shape, and computational results are compared each other.
In this study, a model test was conducted using the soft-mooring technique to evaluate the added resistance of the ship in waves. The study also examined the specific factors that should be considered during the soft-mooring test. The main purpose of soft-mooring is to prevent drifting caused by waves by providing horizontal restoring forces. However, it can also create undesired restoring forces in the vertical direction. Therefore, we examined the restoring force of the ship's 6-DOF motion based on the arrangement of the soft-mooring and the height of the mooring connection point. We also checked the corresponding resonance period and drift distance. The soft-mooring test was conducted twice, once with self-propulsion and once without self-propulsion, allowing us to review the advantages and disadvantages of each test technique. The main parameters measured in these model tests were 6DOF motion and added resistance on the ship. We compared these measurements obtained from two different techniques (with and without self-propulsion). Additionally, we also compared the measurements based on the types of measuring sensors used (2D load cells on FP, AP, and 1D load cells on each mooring line) as well as the height of the mooring connection point.

In this paper, a two-phase flow solver $HiFoam^{(R)}$ has been developed based on the $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ to predict resistance of a ship in calm water. The VOF method of $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ was reviewed and a simple flux limiter was introduced to enhance the robustness of the solver. The procedure for predicting ship motion was modified by introducing Quasi-Steady Fluid-Body Interaction (QS-FBI) with least square regression to improve the efficiency. Other minor factors were considered as well in terms of the efficiency and robustness. The HiFoam was applied to KCS and JBC simulations to validate its efficiency and accuracy by comparing the results to experimental data and STAR-CCM+. The $HiFoam^{(R)}$ was also applied to various ships and it showed good agreements to the experimental data.
This paper provides the structure of a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) based simulation method and its validation results for the ship motion problem. The motion information of the hull computed from the equations of motion is considered in the momentum equations as the relative fluid motions with respect to a non-inertial coordinates system. A finite volume method is used to solve the governing equations, while the free surface is captured by using a two-phase level-set method and the realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence closure. For the validation of the present numerical approach, the numerical results of the resistance and motion tests for DTMB 5415 at two ship speeds are compared against available experimental data.
This study investigated the steady-flow effects present in the numerical computation of the resistance added to a ship in waves. For a ship advancing in the forward direction, a time-domain 3D Rankine panel method is applied to solve the ship motion problem, and the added resistance due to waves is calculated using a near-field method, with the direct integration of the second-order pressure on the hull surface. In the linear potential theory, the steady flow is approximated by the basis potential of a uniform flow or double-body flow in order to linearize the boundary conditions. By applying these two different linearization schemes, the coupling effects between steady and unsteady solutions were examined. Furthermore, in order to analyze the steady-flow effects on the hull geometry, the computation results for two realistic hull forms, a KVLCC2 tanker and DTC containership, were compared. In particular, the mj term, which represents the coupling effects under the body boundary condition, was evaluated considering the geometry of a non-wall-sided ship. Lastly, the characteristics of the linearization schemes were examined in relation to the disturbed waves around a ship and the components of added resistance.
When two layers of carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays are loaded to mate, the free ends of individual CNTs come into contact at the interface of the two layers. This leads to a higher contact resistance due to a smaller contact region. However, when the free CNT ends of one array penetrate into the mating array, the contact region increases, effectively lowering the contact resistance. To explore the penetration of mating CNTs, we perform molecular dynamic simulations of a simple unit cell model, incorporating four CNTs in the lower array layer coupled with a single moving CNT on the upper layer. The interaction with neighboring CNTs is modelled by long-range carbon bond order potential (LCBOP I). The model structure is optimized by energy minimization through the conjugate gradient method. A NVT ensemble is used for maintain a room temperature during simulation. The time integration is performed through the velocity-Verlet algorithm. A significant vibrational motion of CNTs is captured when penetration is not available, resulting in a specific vibration mode with a high frequency. Due to this vibrational behavior, the random behaviors of CNT motion for predicting the penetration are confirmed under the specific gap distances between CNTs. Thus, the probability of penetration is examined according to the gap distance between CNTs in the lower array and the aspect ratio of CNTs. The penetration is significantly affected by the vibration mode due to the van der Waals forces between CNTs.

In this paper, we propose the miniaturization size of wearable Range of Motion(ROM) and a system that can be connected with smart devices in real-time to measure the joint movement range dynamically. Currently, the ROM of the joint is directly measured by a person using a goniometer. Conventional methods are different depending on the measurement method and location of the measurement person, which makes it difficult to measure consistently and may cause errors. Also, it is impossible to measure the ROM of joints in real-life situations. Therefore, the wearable sensor is attached to the joint to be measured to develop a miniaturize size ROM device that can measure the range of motion of the joint in real-time. The sensor measured the resistance value changed according to the movement of the joint using a load cell. Also, the sensed analog values were converted to digital values using an Analog to Digital Converter(ADC). The converted amount can be transmitted wireless to the smart device through the wearable sensor node. As a result, the developed device can be measured more consistently than the measurement using the goniometer, communication with IoT-based smart devices, and wearable enables dynamic observation. The developed wearable sensor node will be able to monitor the dynamic state of rehabilitation patients in real-time and improve the rapid change of treatment method and customized treatment.
