The purposes of this study were to evaluate the adherence of bacteria on various denture base resin materials and effects of chitosan, added to denture base materials on bacterial adherence. PMMA denture base resin such as heat-cured Vertex-RS, self-cured Vertex-SC and 4-META denture base resin such as heat-cured Meta-Dent, self-cured Meta-Fast were used in this study Samples were divided into two groups the denture base resin with chitosan, without chitosan Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei were used in this study. The surface of samples was observed by SEM. When chitosan was added to M17 and MRS broth, viable cell count of bacteria was reduced. Viable cell count of Streptococcus mutans on the samples decreased as follows : Meta-Dent, Vertex-SC, Meta-Fast, Vertex-RS. Viable cell count of Lactobacillus casei on the samples decreased as follows: Vertex-RS, Meta-Dent, Meta-Fast, Vertex-SC. The resin with chitosan showed lower adherence of bacteria than without chitosan. The images of SEM showed that the surface of the resin with chitosan was rougher than that of without chitosan. These results showed that the denture base resin materials with chitosan have rougher surface than without chitosan, but less bacteria adhered on them.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of denture cleansers on the flexural bond strength of heat curing denture base resin and reliners. Methods: The denture base resin was bonded to the reliners(vertex self curing, kooliner, rebase II) to make the specimen. The specimens were immersed in denture cleansers(Polident, Cleadent) and evaluated after 1week, 3week, 5weeks. After denture reliners were injected, flexural bond strength was measured. Results: The bond strength of denture base resin and vertex self curing resin as reliner was significantly decreased at 5 weeks in cleadent and polident(p<0.05). The bond strength of kooliner and rebase II was significantly decreased at 5 weeks in denture cleaners(p<0.05). Kooliner was significantly decreased at 3 and 5 weeks in polident and rebase II was significantly decreased at 3 and 5 weeks in all denture cleansers(p<0.05). Conclusion : The flexural strength between the denture base resin and the reliners decreased significantly as the treatment time increased.
Statement of the problem. The record base in fabricating procedures of the complete denture, as a temporary form for reproducing denture base, is used to record upper and lower jaw relation and to align artificial teeth and try-in it in the mouth. The accuracy of jaw relation record is affected by the accuracy, stiffness and stability of the record base. So, the accuracy of record base is the most important requirements of jaw relation records. Purpose of study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the gap that occurred over the palatal area of a maxillary record base fabricated with autopolymerizing resin and light-curing resin. Methods/material. The maxillary record bases were fabricated out of autopolymerizing resin that is used the most frequently in clinics and light-curing resin that attracts special attention for its several merits. The light-curing resin was made by two kinds of polymerization methods, which are one step curing method and multiple step curing method. All record bases were cut in certain positions of the master cast 1 hour and 1 day later after fabrication and the accuracy of the master cast was measured and analyzed with a microscope. Results. A pattern of gap formation between the record base and the maxillary cast was observed in all specimens. According to kinds of resins, autopolymerizing resin was significantly more accurate than light-curing resin. There was no statistical difference according to time lapse, and in all three groups, the maximum discrepancy occurred at the posterior border in the mid-palatal region. Conclusion. The autopolymerizing resin is better than light-curing resin, and multiple step curing method is more accurate than one step curing method when using light-curing resin.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether extension of the custom base is necessary for enhancement of bond strength, by comparing the debonding forces and residual adhesives of 3 different lingual bracket systems. Methods: A total of 42 extracted upper premolars were randomly divided into 3 groups of 14 each for bonding with brackets having (1) a conventional limited resin custom base; (2) an extended gold alloy custom base: Incognito${TM}$; and (3) an extended resin custom base: KommonBase${TM}$. The bonding area was measured by scanning the bracket bases with a 3-dimensional digital scanner. The debonding force was measured with an Instron universal testing machine, which applied an occlusogingival shear force. Results: The mean debonding forces were 60.83 N (standard deviation [SD] 10.12), 69.29 N (SD 9.59), and 104.35 N (SD17.84) for the limited resin custom base, extended gold alloy custom base, and extended resin custom base, respectively. The debonding force observed with the extended resin custom base was significantly different from that observed with the other bases. In addition, the adhesive remnant index was significantly higher with the extended gold alloy custom base. Conclusions: All 3 custom-base lingual brackets can withstand occlusal and orthodontic forces. We conclude that effective bonding of lingual brackets can be obtained without extension of the custom base.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility of the decrease of bond strength due to increased thickness of resin base in indirect bracket bonding technique. Metal brackets were bonded to the resin blocks involving bovine lower incisors and the thickness of resin bases was increased by increments of 0.5 mm from 0.0 mm to 2.0 mm. They were divided into two groups, one group is that the thickness of resin base was increased but the loading point from the tooth surface was maintained constantly, the other group is that the loading point from the tooth surface and the resin base thickness were increased concomitantly. The shear bond strength was tested on universal testing machine and the failure patterns were assessed with the adhesive remnant index(ARI). The results were as follows: 1. When the distance from the tooth surface to the loading point was maintained constantly, shear bond strength was increased significantly according to the decrease of distance from the bracket base to the loading point and the increase of resin base thickness. 2. When the distance from the tooth surface to the loading point and the resin base thickness were increased concomitantly, shear bond strength was decreased according to the increase of resin base thickness but significant differences were ignorable. 3. There were no significant differences in ARI scores according to the change in the thickness of resin base. The results of the present study indicated that shear bond strength was not much affected by the thickness of resin base, whereas was decreased according to the increase of distance from bracket base to the loading point.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the color stability, water sorption and cytotoxicity of thermoplastic acrylic resin for the non-metal clasp dentures to those of thermoplastic polyamide and conventional heat-polymerized denture base resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three types of denture base resin, which are conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Paladent 20), thermoplastic polyamide resin (Bio Tone), thermoplastic acrylic resin (Acrytone) were used as materials for this study. One hundred five specimens were fabricated. For the color stability test, specimens were immersed in the coffee and green tee for 1 and 8 weeks. Color change was measured by spectrometer. Water sorption was tested after 1 and 8 weeks immersion in the water. For the test of cytotoxicity, cell viability assay was measured and cell attachment was analyzed by FE-SEM. RESULTS. All types of denture base resin showed color changes after 1 and 8 weeks immersion. However, there was no significant difference between denture base resins. All specimens showed significant color changes in the coffee than green tee. In water sorption test, thermoplastic acrylic resin showed lower values than conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin and thermoplastic polyamide resin. Three types of denture base showed low cytotoxicity in cell viability assay. Thermoplastic acrylic resin showed the similar cell attachment but more stable attachment than conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin. CONCLUSION. Thermoplastic acrylic resin for the non-metal clasp denture showed acceptable color stability, water sorption and cytotoxicity. To verify the long stability in the mouth, additional in vitro studies are needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the chemical surface treatment on the flexural bond strength of heat curing denture base resin and reliners. Methods: Denture base resin surface was treated with MMA 95% and TEGDMA 5%, MMA 95% and silane coupling agent 5%, heat curing resin monomer. After denture reliners were injected, flexural bond strength was measured. Results: The repair resin of Vertex SC was higher than Lang, hard reliner of Kooliner was higher than Rebase. Soft reliner of Dura base and Coe-soft showed differently according to the surface treatment. The all chemical treatment groups on Vertex SC were significantly higher than control(p<0.05). In Lang group, 5% MPS treated group showed significantly higher flexural bond strength than others(p<0.05). In Kooliner group, all chemical treatment groups showed significantly higher than control(p<0.05). In Rebase group, the 5% MPS and the monomer denture base resin treated groups showed significantly higher than others(p<0.05). In Dura base group, 5% MPS treated group showed significantly higher flexural bond strength than others(p<0.05). In Coe-soft group, all treated groups were significantly higher than control group(p<0.05). Conclusion: TEGDMA, MPS, and the monomer of heat-cured denture base resin were effective to improve the bond strengths between denture base and denture relining materials. Especially, 5% MPS expected to strengthen effectively the bonding property of denture base and denture reliners within the results of this study.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fitness of 4 kinds of resin record base materials. The record base materials used on the edentulous cast in this study were Triad VLC resin (Dentsply International Inc., U.S.A.), custom tray resin (Kerr Ltd., U.S.A.), heat-cure resin (Dentimex Co., Holland), and self-cure resin (Dentimex Co., Holland). The gap width between record base and cast were measured in the ridge crest and midpalatal area with microhardness tester. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Among the 4 kinds of record base, heat-cure Vertex fitted best on the cast. Triad and Fomatray fitted better than self-cure Vertex. Self-cure Vertex had the poorest fit. 2. The quality of the fit of the record base varied at different locations on the cast. The record base fit better in the ridge crest than midpalatal area. 3. In the midpalatal area, there's no significant difference in the fit of Fomatray, Triad and heat-cure Vertex. They all fit better than self-cure Vertex. 4. In the ridge crest, heat-cure Vertex fit better than any other record base.
Injection processing of denture base resin was introduced by Pryer in 1942, in an attempt to reduce processing shrinkage. More recently a continuous-pressure injection type technique has been developed (SR-Ivocap, Ivoclar AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein.), and it reduced processing error and increased resin density. The purpose of this study was to compare tensile bond strength of heat-cured, cold-cured, and light-cured denture base resin bonded to continuous-pressure injection type resin. To know it, 60 cylindrical resin specimens were fabricated, and tensile bond strength were measured. The results were as follows : 1. The mean tensile bond strength bonded to continuous-pressure injection type resin was lower than bonded to conventional heat cured resin. But tensile bond strength of conventional heat cured resin bonding with light cured resin was lower than continuous-pressure injection type resin. 2. Of the tensile bond strength bonded to continuous-pressure injection type resin, tensile bond strength bonding with continuous-pressure injection type resin was the greatest(but not significantly different from bonding with conventional heat cured resin), followed by cold-cured, light-cured resin. 3. Of the tensile bond strength bonded to conventional heat cured resin, tensile bond strength bonding with conventional heat cured resin was the greatest and followed by continuous-pressure injection type resin, cold-cured resin, light-cured resin. According to these results, bonding of continuous-pressure injection type resin with conventional heat cured resin or continuous-pressure injection type resin is acceptable, but bonding with light-cured resin is questionable.
This study investigated the effects of resin surface primers for rebase resins on the surface texture of denture base resins by the use of scanning electron microscopy. This study also evaluated the bond strength of rebase resins to denture base resin. The denture base resin in this study was Vertex RS (Dentimex Co., Ltd., Holland). The rebase resins used were Tokuso Rebase (Tokuyama Co., Ltd., Japan), Metabase (Sun Medical Co., Ltd., Japan), New True Liner(Harry J, Bosworth Co., Ill.), and Reverse (Nissin Co., Ltd., Japan). The test samples were divided into four parts: Group 1 : Treated with primer with brush. Group 2 : Immersed in the primer for 5 seconds. Group 3 : Immersed in the primer for 10 seconds. Group 4 : Immersed in the primer for 30 seconds. Control group : not treated with primer The results were as follows; 1. The bond strength of rebase resins to denture base resin is increased by application of primers. 2. Regardless of the rebase resin type, there was no significant difference among the bond strength in groups G1, G2, G3, G4. There was a significant difference with the control. (P<0.05) 3. Regardless of each group, the bond strength according to the rebase resin type was decreased in the following order: Tokuso Rebase, New Tru Liner, Reverse and then Metabase. 4. Under the scanning electron microscope, brush application produced a softening of the denture base surface. After immersion, all primers produced a spongelike structure on the denture base resin surface. The results of this study suggest that primers produce a significant effect by means of brush application, therefore it is recommended as the most convenient and logical procedure for application of the primers.
