Cold expansion of fastener holes is a mechanical process widely used in the aerospace industry. This treatment leads to an improvement of fatigue behavior due to the developed compressive residual stresses on the hole surface. Despite its importance to aerospace industries, little attention has been devoted to the accurate modeling of the process. This study is devoted to the modeling and simulation of the residual stress resulting from the cold expansion of two adjacent fastener holes. Simultaneous cold expansion of two adjacent holes lead to much higher compressive residual stress than sequential cold expansion.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of shot peening on the fatigue strength and fatigue life of two kinds of aluminum alloys. The fatigue strength behavior of aluminum alloys were estimated by the stress ratio and shot velocities. The fatigue life and strength increased with increasing the test shot velocity. However, at the shot velocity range between 50m/s and 70m/s, the compressive residual stress phenomena were observed in test conditions of different shot velocity. The optimal shot velocity is acquired by considering the peak values of the compressive residual stress, dislocations, brittle striation, slip, and fisheye on the fracture surface of test specimen. It was observed from the SEM observation on the deformed specimen that the brittle striation, fisheye were showed in the intergranular fracture structure boundaries at the this velocities. Therefore, fatigue strength and fatigue life would be considered that shot velocity has close relationship with the compressive residual stress.

Degradation problem due to long term service in machine or structure is now one of important problems in whole industrial field. In this study, pressure vessel steel, Cr-Mo steel, which was used more than 60,000 hours, was surface-modified by laser beam radiation for the improvement of fatigue strength. To find out optimum radiation condition, hardness, residual stress measurement and fatigue tests were carried out with the specimen of different radiation conditions. Experimental results show that micro-hardness values on the surface of the radiated specimens were approximately 2.2 times higher than those of un-radiated ones. In the depth direction of the specimen, hardness on the surface showed maximum value and was decreased at the inside the specimen. Different hardness values are due to the energy density Q which was absorbed by the specimen. Fatigue tests show that fatigue life was improved by the compressive residual stress after laser beam radiation. However, some specimens with differednt conditions show the shorter fatigue life. It means that laser beam radiation with optimum parameter can improve thae fatigue strength.

The main components, such as a reactor vessel, in commercial nuclear power plants have been welded to pipes with dissimilar metal in which Primary Water Corrosion Cracking (PWSCC) has been occurred. PWSCC has become a worldwide issue recently. This paper addresses the results of experimental and numerical analysis to prevent PWSCC by changing the stress profile that is tensile stress to compressive stress at interesting regions with plastic deformation generated by mechanical pressure. Based on the results of experimental and numerical analysis with a 6 inch pipe and dissimilar metal welded pipes, compressive stress 68~206 Mpa is generated at all locations of inner surface in the heat affected zone.
Microcracks can rapidly grow and develop in high-strength steels used in offshore structures. It is important to render these microcracks harmless to ensure the safety and reliability of offshore structures. Here, the dependence of the aspect ratio (As) of the maximum depth of harmless crack (ahlm) was evaluated under three different conditions considering the threshold stress intensity factor (Δkth) and residual stress of offshore structural steel F690. The threshold stress intensity factor and fatigue limit of fatigue crack propagation, dependent on crack dimensions, were evaluated using Ando's equation, which considers the plastic behavior of fatigue and the stress ratio. ahlm by peening was analyzed using the relationship between Δkth obtained by Ando's equation and Δkth obtained by the sum of applied stress and residual stress. The plate specimen had a width 2W = 12 mm and thickness t = 20 mm, and four value of As were considered: 1.0, 0.6, 0.3, and 0.1. The ahlm was larger as the compressive residual stress distribution increased. Additionally, an increase in the values of As and Δkth(l) led to a larger ahlm. With a safety factor (N) of 2.0, the long-term safety and reliability of structures constructed using F690 can be secured with needle peening. It is necessary to apply a more sensitive non-destructive inspection technique as a non-destructive inspection method for crack detection could not be used to observe fatigue cracks that reduced the fatigue limit of smooth specimens by 50% in the three types of residual stresses considered. The usefulness of non-destructive inspection and non-damaging techniques was reviewed based on the relationship between ahlm, aNDI (minimum crack depth detectable in non-destructive inspection), acr N (crack depth that reduces the fatigue limit to 1/N), and As.
To investigate the effect of ultrasonic nano-crystalline surface modification (UNSM) treatment on rolling contact fatigue and residual stress properties of bearing steels, this paper carried out a rolling contact fatigue test, measured residual stress and retained austenite, performed a wear test, observed microstructure, measured micro hardness, and analyzed surface topology. After the UNSM treatment, it was found that the surface became minute by over $100{\mu}m$. The micro surface hardness was changed from Hv730~740 of base material to Hv850~880 with about 20% improvement, and hardening depth was about 1.3 mm. The compressive residual stress was measured as high as -700~-900 MPa, and the quantity of retained austenite was reduced to 27% from 34%. The polymet RCF-6 ball type rolling contact fatigue test showed over 4 times longer fatigue lifetime after the UNSM treatment under 551 kgf load and 8,000 rpm. In addition, this paper observed the samples, which went through the rolling contact fatigue test, with OM and SEM, and it was found that the samples had a spalling phenomenon (the race way is decentralized) after the UNSM treatment. However, before the treatment, the samples had excessive spalling and complete exploration. Comparison of the test samples before and after the UNSM treatment showed a big difference in the fatigue lifetime, which seems to result from the complicated effects of micro particles, compressive residual stress, retained austenite, and surface topology.
In the study, the fatigue strength improvement and mechanism have been estimated by the Spot-Heating treatment on welded bead toes. For this, web-gusset specimens were made without residual stresses and the others with residual stresses imposed by Spot-Heating. The 4-point bending tests were performed in order to estimate the effect of spot-heating on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue test, fatigue strength of As-Welded specimen for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending has satisfied the grade of fatigue prescribed in specifications of korea, AASHTO and JSSC. As compare with As-Welded specimen and Spot-Heating specimen have increased about 20% for the fatigue strength at $7.7{\times}10^6$ cycles. The Spot-Heating by reformation of the residual stress on welded bead toes has greatly affected the fatigue crack propagation life, but has slightly affected the fatigue crack initiation life.

The ceramic has such high qualities as light weight, abrasion resistance, heat resistance compared with metal, but since it is breakable, it can't be used as structural material and it is desirable to joining metal which is full of toughness, but, according as the ceramic/metal joint is executed at high temperature, the joint residual stress develops near the joint sides in the process of cooling the high temperature down to the suitable temperature due to difference of the thermal expansion coefficient between ceramic and metal, and the joint residualstress lowers the fracture strength. In this study, to ensure security and improvement of bending strength, 1 studies on see distribution shape of residual stress according to high thermal cycle, and the influnence of theraml cycle and distribution shape of residual stess on joint-strength.

The shot peening is largely used for a surface treatment of metallic components where small spherical pellets called shots are blasted onto the surface with velocities up to 100 m/s. This treatment leads to improvement of fatigue behavior due to the developed compressive residual stresses, and so it has gained widespread acceptance I the automobile and aerospace industries. The residual stress profile on surface layer depends on the parameters of shot peening, which are, shot velocity, shot diameter, coverage, impact angle, material properties etc. and the method to confirm this profile is the measurement by X-ray diffractometer only. Despite the importance to automobile ad aerospace industries, little attention has been devoted to the accurate modelling of the process. In this paper, the simulation technique is applied to predict the magnitude ad distribution of the residual stress and plastic deformation caused by shot peening with the help of the finite element analysis.
