  • Surface residual stresses as well as wall thickness and ovality changes after U-bending process on UNS N06690 row-1 heat exchanger tubes, were estimated. Surface residual stresses were measured by Hole Drilling Method(HDM), calculating the stresses from relieved strains of 3 rosette strain gages. After bending of the tubes, dimensional tolerances for wall thickness and ovality were satisfied with ASTM requirements. Residual stresses at the extrados were introduced with compressive stress(-) by bending operations, and its maximum value reached-319 MPa in axial direction at ${\phi}=0^{\circ}$ in position. Tensile residual stresses(+) of ${\sigma}_zz=45$ MPa,${\sigma}_zz=25$ MPa were introduced in the intrados surface at position of ${\phi}=0^{\circ}$ Maximum tensile residual stress of 170 MPa was detected on the flank side at position of ,${\phi}=95^{\circ}$i.e., at apex region. It appeared that higher stress gradients were generated at the irregular transition regions. In the trend of residual stress changes with U-bend position, the extrados is related with the changes of ovality and the intrados is related with the changes of wall thickness.

  • In this study, the effect of laser shock peening on a titanium alloy was modeled using different confinements. Both liquid and solid confinement could be applied to laser shock peening, and solid confinement provided a dry laser shock peening process, which has the advantage of a corrosion-free effect. When a different confinement was applied to laser shock peening, a different peening effect would be expected. In our study, the peening effect was numerically modeled and simulated. The main effect of different confinements was a change in the impedances required to confine a shock wave from a plasma. The impedances were assumed with respect to different materials. Johnson-Cook's plastic deformation modeling was applied to the simulation. The strains and residual stresses were calculated to evaluate the confinement effects. When solid confinement was used, the residual stress increased by 60-85%, compared to the case of liquid confinement. However, the depth of the residual stress was slightly deeper. The simulated results could be applied to estimate the peening effect when a different confinement was used in the laser shock peening process.

  • Finite element analysis and experiment are performed to investigate residual deformation induced by the repair of composite shell structures using a prepreg patch method. The finite element program is developed on the basis of a three-dimensional degenerated shell element and the first order shear deformation theory. The results analyzed for the laminated shell with free boundary conditions are compared with strains measured during the prepreg patch repair. Final residual stresses occur greatly near the patch when the laminated shell with all edges clamped is repaired using the prepreg patch. Stacking sequences of the laminated shell and patch affect significantly the residual stresses which occur even if they are the same.

  • Fatigue crack growth retardation of 304 L stainless steel is studied using a neutron diffraction method. Three orthogonal strain components(crack growth, crack opening, and through-thickness direction) are measured in the vicinity of the crack tip along the crack propagation direction. The residual strain profiles (1) at the mid-thickness and (2) at the 1.5 mm away from the mid-thickness of the compact tension(CT) specimen are compared. Residual lattice strains at the 1.5 mm location are slightly higher than at the mid-thickness. The CT specimen is deformed in situ under applied loads, thereby providing evolution of the internal stress fields around the crack tip. A tensile overload results in an increased magnitude of the compressive residual stress field. In the crack growth retardation, it is found that the stresses are dispersed in the crack-wake region, where the highest compressive residual stresses are measured. Our neutron diffraction mapping results reveal that the dominant mechanism is by interrupting the transfer of stress concentration at the crack tip.

  • A metal-coated FBG (fiber Bragg grating) sensor has a memory effect, which can recall the maximum strains experienced by the structure. In this study, a nickel-coated FBG sensor was fabricated through electroless (i.e., chemical plating) and electroplating. A thickness of approximately $43{\mu}m$ of a nickel layer was achieved. Then, we conducted cyclic loading tests for the fabricated nickel-coated FBG sensors to verify their capability to produce residual strains. The results revealed that the residual strain induced by the nickel coating linearly increased with an increase in the maximum strain experienced by the sensor. Therefore, we verified that a nickel-coated FBG sensor has a memory effect. The fabrication methods and the results of the cycle loading test will provide basic information and guidelines in the design of a nickel-coated FBG sensor when it is applied in the development of structural health monitoring techniques.

  • This paper presents finite element (FE) analyses to clarify the effects of external pressure on the residual stresses in a girth-welded steel pipe. At first, FE simulation of the girth welding process is carried out to obtain the weld-induced residual stresses employing sequentially coupled three-dimensional (3-D) thermo-mechanical FE formulation. Then, 3-D elastic-plastic FE analyses incorporating the residual stresses and plastic strains obtained from the preceding FE simulation are performed to investigate the residual stress behavior in the girth-welded pipe under external pressure. The FE analysis results show that the hoop compressive stresses induced by the external pressure significantly alter the hoop residual stresses in the course of the mechanical loading.

  • For long piles driven in deep clay deposits, it is difficult to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity due to large resistance induced by long embedded depth, and also the load transfer curve due to large residual load induced by negative skin friction, even with the performance of pile load tests. In this research, a hi-directional load test on a PHC pile driven in deep soft deposit was performed in order to evaluate the tip and shaft resistances separately, which are feasible to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile. Residual load of the pile was determined by continuous monitoring of pile strains after the pile installation. The true resistance and true load-movement curve of the pile were properly estimated by taking account of the residual load. A model far behavior of the shaft resistance vs. movement was also proposed, which includes the effects of residual load based on the experiment. Consequently, it was proved that the residual load should be taken into consideration for correctly analyzing load test results of piles in deep clay deposits.

  • In the present work, a formula for plate deformation produced by line heating, in terms of process parameters such as heat input and plate dimensions, is developed analytically using an eigenstrain concept. The residual deformation that was due to thermal process was depends on the magnitude and region of plastic strains at heating zone. The magnitude of plastic strains was determined by disk model and its region was calculated using the Rosenthal"s solution. The vertical displacement of the plate was analyzed by using an infinite laminated plate theory to consider a cuboidal inclusion with an eigenstrain. Comparison of the calculated results and experimental data shows the accuracy and validity of proposed method.thod.

  • A plastically deformed layer in the precision machined surface affects in various forms the physical properties of machined components such as the fatigue strength, the dimensional instability, microcracks and the stress corrosion cracking. These physical properties, so called surface integrity, are very important for designing highly stressed and critically loaded components. Typical plastic strains in the precision machined surface are very difficult to measure, since they are located within a very short distance from the surface and they change very rapidly. A new way is suggested to determine the residual strain in plastically deformed materials by analyzing the plastically deformed layer after a subsequent recrystallization process. This investigation is to explore a new technique for measuring plastic strain in machining applications, and in particular, to and the effect of cutting parameters(rake angle, depth of cut, specific cutting energy), on the plastic strains and strain energy.

  • The reinforced concrete(RC) flexural members strengthened with steel plate/CFS at soffit have initial stresses and strains in reinforcements and concrete caused by the service loads at the time of retrofitting works. These initial residual stresses and strains of strengthened beams may affect the flexural performance of the rehabilitated beams. The objective of this study is to evaluate and verify the effectiveness of rehabilitation by external bonded steel plates and CFS to the tension face of the beams under three conditions of pre-loading. Thirteen beam specimens are tested and analyzed. Main test parameters are pre-loading conditions, strengthening materials and reinforcement ratio of specimens. The effect of test parameters on the strengthened beams is analyzed from the maximum load capacity, load-deflection relationship, state of stress of the materials. crack propagation phase, and failure modes. Both test results and design formulas of ACI Code provisions are compared and evaluated.
