Residual Stress Measurement by L$_{CR}$ Wave and Acoustic Emission Characteristics from Fatigue Crack Propagation in STS316L Weldment (STS316L용접재의 표면파에 의한 잔류응력 측정과 균열진전시의 음향방출특성)

  • In this study, the residual stress and the acoustic emission Charactreistics from fatigue crack propagation were investigated, bused on the welded material of STS316L. The residual stress of welding locations could be evaluated by ultrasonic parameters, such as L$_{CR}$ wave velocity and L$_{CR}$ wave frequency; the residual stress between base metal and weld metal was evaluated. In the fatigue tests, three types of signals were observed, regardless of specimen condition, base metal, and weld metal. Based on NDE analysis of AE signals by the time-frequency analysis method, it should also be possible to evaluate, in real-time, the crack propagation and final fracture process, resulting from various damages and defects in welded structural members.

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular manufacturing process and new materials development for solving the fatigue fracture problem attendant upon high strength of suspension of automobile are actively advanced. In this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in high temperatures($100^{\circ}$, $150^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings. (1)Compressive residual stress decreases in high temperature, that is, with increasing temperature. (2)The effect of compressive residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior in high temperature increases below ${\Delta}K=17{\sim}19MPa$ (3)It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compress residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.

  • This study is performed to compare characteristics of various measurement technique for weld residual stress. AISI 304 plate with one path weld on the surface was manufactured for this study. Hole drilling method, X-ray diffraction method and instrumented indentation method were used to measure the residual stress before and after welding. All the results were compared and analyzed.

  • Induction hardening has been used to improve torsional strength and characteristics of wear for axle shaft which is a part of automobile to transmit driving torque from differential to wheel. After rapidly heating and cooling process of induction hardening, the shaft has residual stress and material properties change which affect allowable transmit torque. The objective of this study is to predict the distribution of residual stress and estimate the torsional strength of induction hardened axle shafts which has been residual stress using finite element analysis considered thermo mechanical behavior of material and experiments. Results indicate that the torsional strength of axle shaft depends on the surface hardening depth and distribution of residual stress.

  • Pressurized high temperature plastic resin flows into the cavity of mold and is solidified in injection molding process. Residual stress is being developed in injection molded part because of high temperature variations and high pressure. Developed residual stress relaxes as time goes. Consequently this makes part deformed and deteriorates quality of product. A measurement method of residual stress for injection molded transparent articles has been investigated using photoelasticity. Light, a composite of electromagnetic waves, is purified into a single wave by a polarized film. When this wave passes through the specimen, birefringence is developed according to the level of residual stress in the specimen and color fringed pattern appears after the second polarized film. Residual stress in the injection molded transparent flat a part has been measured quantitatively using the color fringed pattern. Optical characteristics have been a part also predicted by computer simulation and compared with experimental results.

  • Antifatigue failure technology take an important the part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress by shot peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in stress ratio(R=0.1, 0.3, 0.6)was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. There is difference between shot peening specimen and unpeening specimen. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peening specimen was lower than that of unpeening specimen. Fatigue lift shows more improvement in the shot peening material than in the unpeening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot peening processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation. That is the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation.

  • Residual stresses, which can be produced during the manufacturing process, play an important role in an industrial field. Residual stresses of structures by welding process are exerting negative effect on the fatigue behavior and safety of structure. Results from the elasto-plastic finite element analysis of the welds for a nuclear component, the residual stress distribution after welding. In this study, a finite element technique is developed to simulate the relaxation of the residual stresses due to the mechanical loads of welds.

  • The compressive residual stress and fatigue behavior of shot peened alloy 600 under a high-temperature environment is investigated in this study. Alloy 600 is used in the main parts of nuclear power plants, and the compressive residual stress induced by the shot peening process is considered to prevent SCC (stress corrosion cracking). To obtain practical results, the fatigue characteristics and compressive residual stress are evaluated under the actual operating temperature of a domestic nuclear power plant, as well as a high-temperature environment. The experimental results show that the peening effects are valid at a high temperature lower than approximately $538^{\circ}C$, which is the threshold temperature. The fatigue life was maintained at temperatures lower than $538^{\circ}C$, and the compressive residual stress at $538^{\circ}C$ was 68.2% of that at room temperature. The present results are expected to be used to obtain basic safety and reliability data.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the behavior of fatigue crack propagation as one of fracture mechanics on the compressive residual stress. We got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, -6$0^{\circ}C$, -8$0^{\circ}C$, and -10$0^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. There is a difference between shot peened specimen and unpeened specimen. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peened specimen was lower than that of unpeened specimen. Shot peening is improve the resistance of crack growth by fatigue that make a compressive residual stress on surface. That is the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation. Temperature goes down, fatigue crack growth rate decreased.

And there is a difference between shot peened specimen and unpeened specimen. The purpose of this study is to predict the behavior of fatigue crack propagation as one of fracture mechanics on the compressive residual stress. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peened metal was lower than that of unpeened metal. The compressive residual stress made an impact on tension and compression of the plasticity deformation in fatigue crack plasticity zone. That is. the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation.
