  • In FE analysis for residual stress of a casting, contact force between mould and casting material and gravity force must be considered for exact simulation. Preheating of a repair weldment had a little effects on the reduction of residual stress. However, preheating with hammer peening had a great deal of effects on the reduction of residual stress. A method for estimation of fatigue life for a repair weldment has been established.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of shot peening on the fatigue strength and fatigue life of two kinds of aluminum alloys. The fatigue strength behavior of aluminum alloys were estimated by the stress ratio and shot velocities. The fatigue life and strength increased with increasing the test shot velocity. However, at the shot velocity range between 50m/s and 70m/s, the compressive residual stress phenomena were observed in test conditions of different shot velocity. The optimal shot velocity is acquired by considering the peak values of the compressive residual stress, dislocations, brittle striation, slip, and fisheye on the fracture surface of test specimen. It was observed from the SEM observation on the deformed specimen that the brittle striation, fisheye were showed in the intergranular fracture structure boundaries at the this velocities. Therefore, fatigue strength and fatigue life would be considered that shot velocity has close relationship with the compressive residual stress.

  • The phenomenological evolution laws of damage can be defined either based on residual life or residual strength. The failure of a specimen can be defined immediately after or before fracture. The former is called in this paper by "failure defined by approach I" and the latter "failure defined by approach II." Usually at failure there is a discontinuity of loading variables and, because of this, damage at failure is discontinuous. Therefore the values of damage at failure by two different approaches are not the same. Based on this idea the sequence effects of the phenomenological evolution law of damage given by $dD/dN=g(D)f({\Phi})$ were studied. Thin-walled graphite/epoxy tubes consisting of four of $[{\pm}45]_s$ laminates were used for the experimental study of sequence effects and the effects of mean stress on fatigue life. It was found that the sequence effects in two step uniaxial fatigue for $[{\pm}45]_s$ graphite/epoxy tubular specimen showed that a high-low block loading sequence was less damaging than a low-high one.

  • Most manufacturing processes such as welding, cutting and molding generate residual stresses on the surface of manufactured parts. Tensile residual stress is harmful to the surface integrity, which results in reduced fatigue life and causes other structural failures when the service stresses are superimposed on the residual stresses. In the research, the residual stresses of the high hardness steel (over $H_{RC}60$) workpiece (SKD11) machined by the hard turning were measured using Hole-drilling Method. Residual stress in the surface of hard turned workpiece was mainly appeared to be compressive stress.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of shot peening angle on residual stress distribution. From the residual stress analysis of perpendicular shot peening, it could be known that the residual stress in the case of high velocity is larger than low velocity, but the amount of shot size has little effect on the magnitude of compressive residual stress. The centroidal residual stress is not greatly affected by the inclined shot peening but mainly related to the unstable conditions of surface residual stress field. Therefore, this tendency may lead to reduce fatigue life of treated material.

  • With respect to thermal barrier coating, the analysis of interface cohesion and residual stress is important to the life of TBC from mechanical view point. Up to now, there is not a model of describing interface cohesion. In the paper, we give a simple model of computing residual stress and study the residual stress of TBC with ANSYS. The distribution of the residual stress in different interface topography and the relationship between the residual stress and the interface topography dimension are presented.

  • The Residual stress is stress at the inside of materials after plastic deformation. Certainly, this residual stress have an effect on fatigue life. Therefore, it is very important that understanding residual stress at the inside of materials. But in case of U-shaped Pipe that it is dealt with a mailer in this paper, distribution of residual stress is very complicated and exactly become unknown caused by difficulty of measurement. Then, in this paper, we are evaluated residual stress at in the inside of materials by finite clement method program and verified validity by test.

  • The objective of this study was to analyse the residual stress in Larix kaempferi board during and after kiln-drying. The boards were primarily intended for using as laminar of cross laminated timber (CLT). In this study, the equivalence of moisture content by equalizing treatment was proved and reduction of residual stress by conditioning treatment was quantified. Prong test and slice test were carried out to analyse the residual stress in wood during drying. Transverse casehardening was measured immediately after making prong sample. Residual stress of four parts in wood from surface to center was analyzed quantitatively based on elastic deformation after just cutting slices from board. Tensile stress and compressive stress on the surface of board during drying did not exceed 2.2 MPa when boards were dried by kiln-drying schedule of T10-C4 and T12-D5. Because the tensile strength and compressive strength of transverse direction of Larix kaempferi lumber are 2.65 MPa and 4.60 MPa, application of more severe drying schedule can be recommended. Cup and twist were reduced by about 40% by equalizing and conditioning treatments after drying.

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of residual food compost application on plant growth and physicochemical properties of soil when residual food compost made from the composting process as part of organic waste recycling was applied in soil as variable rate. The treatments were composed non-fertilizer treatment, control treatment applied with pig compost $20Mg(D.W.)ha^{-1}$, and residual food compost treatments each of applied with 20, 40, 60, $80Mg(D.W.)ha^{-1}$ and were randomized complete block design with three replication. Soil pH after experiment was more increased as more increase application of residual food compost. Other chemical properties of soil including EC were also showed the similar results. The plant growth in treatments applied much of residual food compost at the early growth stage was very damaged and these results were proved at the first growth measurement. Production of the red pepper especially reduced in treatments taken growth demage at the early stage and that of $20Mgha^{-1}$ treatment almost same as control treatment. Bulk density was reduced but porosity was increased according to increase of residual food compost application. Considering the reduction of red pepper production and the demage of growth at the early stage by plenty of salt and water soluble application volume of residual food compost was not permitted over of $30Mgha^{-1}$. Additively, to settle the application volume of residual food compost and to evaluate the plant growth and changes of physicochemical properties of soil, the results taken from continual applying is concluded more important than single application.

  • It depends on the joint configuration, dimensions and constraints on the joint whether the residual stress at the root of single-sided butt weld is tensile or not. Therefore, recommendation is generally made that high R ratio should be used in the fatigue test of this type of joint in order to prevent excessively long life caused by compressive residual stress. in this research, the residual stress profile in butt weld joint was obtained through compliance method, using successive extension of a slot and measurement of the variation of strain during the slot extension. The residual stress profile was firstly assumed to be the linear summation of Legendre polynomials up to 9th order excluding 0th and 1st order. Strain variation on the surface was measured while the slot was being extended by cutting to find out the 8 unknown coefficients of each polynomial tenn. The cut was made by the electric discharge machine. It was concluded that the residual stress near the surface stayed positive, however, it turned into the negative value as soon as it passed through 2 or 3 mm depth. Several fatigue tests were also carried out under zero stress ratio. Test results showed that fatigue life coincides well with the design cuive of butt joint in British Standards, which supports that it is tensile residual stress that exists near the weld root.
