Compared with a lot of comprehensive and alternative studies on elderly housing facilities until now, specialized studies of behavior of elderly housing life and detailed dimensional study have hardly made. Therefore we intend to examine the status of kitchen planning on representative elderly housing facilities in Korea. As the methods of this study, we executed a field study into 4 representative elderly housing facilities in Korea. We visited each 2 units out of the outstanding 4facilities and surveyed the total 8 kitchens. Then we analyzed the space planning and kitchen furniture design of them and the state of kitchen commodities, and measured the kitchen equipment. In addition, we executed interview about satisfaction, preference, use from the residents. As a result, we could find out that depending on whether residents were sewed with meal offered from the facilities or not, the pattern of usage and commodities were quite different. It is necessary to supply the simplest spaces just for preparing some refreshment and tea are suitable. And for the self-cooking residents, much larger cabinets and utility rooms are additionally needed. Safety and functional aspect were quite well designed. Washing machines are usually built-in the kitchen cabinets, and residents are satisfied with this arrangement. We hope that the supplementary study about old people habit and behavior will be a good data of kitchen planning for Korean-type elderly housing units of facilities.

  • The aim of this paper is to find out different preference of common spaces and shared activities in senior cohousing community between regions in Korea: Seoul and other cities. Social survey was conducted nationwide and the respondents were 50s only, since they are the generation who will face to elderly housing subject within 10 years in turbulent Korean society. Collected data, about 1000, were analyzed by SPSS program using frequency, percentage, and Chi-square test. In summary, respondents mostly would like to move to senior cohousing on circumstance when they remain alone without big difference between regions. Loneliness and housekeeping were considered as the most difficult issues for the elderly to manage by themselves. Among common spaces, exercise room was the most preferred space to meeting room and kitchen. Exercise room was more preferred in Seoul than in other cities, on the contrary meeting room was evidently less preferred in other cities than in Seoul. Regarding shared activities, resident meeting, gardening, and common meal were revealed as less preferred activities than hobby exercise and tea meeting. As a conclusion, I would like to propose that a big common living room is better to be designed for meeting room cum dining and gathering room with flexibility in order to give residents chances to know each other more often. And since common space and shared activity show different preferences by regions, those are to be designed and planned reflecting region's different circumstance.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the attractiveness value according to the preference level on architectural aesthetic. This research starts from the concept that aesthetic is phenomenon and from the viewpoint of 'attraction value' which affects goods. Interactive internet surveys were conducted for 500 citizens of Seoul metropolitan city who are potential users of the Nodle Islet Cultural Center. Based on the scenarios and questionnaires with fuzzy models, we have examined the evaluation of architectural aesthetic and monetary willing-to-payment, and estimated the economic value by preference level of architectural aesthetic through linear regression analysis. The main results of the study are as follows: First, the economic value of the Nodle Islet Cultural Center was estimated at ?15,683.43/person. Residents of Seoul metropolitan city were willing to accept the increase in the above-mentioned amount of the facility fares when their preferred works (average 86.81 points) were constructed. (P <0/05) Second, it is confirmed that the economic value increases dramatically as the preference level of architectural aesthetic increases. Third, it is presumed that the infinite valuation of architectural aesthetic and the problem of free riding coexist in the estimation of economic valuation of architectural aesthetic for public buildings. Fourth, by mixing the fuzzy logic with contingent valuation method, starting point bias and no response biases that happened in contingent valuation could be disappeared. bias elimination must be considered seriously because another bias could be happened in full process of the research. The results of this study will serve as a basis for spreading architectural aesthetic value-oriented research from the vague and obscure aesthetic-centered discussion on the existing architectural aesthetic. In addition, it will be an opportunity to draw institutional application and utilization strategy of architectural aesthetic through architectural aesthetic value research.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a space program of the new community center in multi-family housing. The community center defined in this study is a communal facility which integrate cultural and welfare facilities and activity programs into a complex. Through the analysis of the community programs and spaces for multi-family housing community, a new community center program is proposed. And basic area guidelines are proposed through the making of the space modelling of the important area of the center. According to the guidelines, more spaces compared to the present standards and conditions are needed for a new community center. However, the adjustment of area regulation is essential, considering the fast changing trend of resident's social needs. A new regulation system that controls the total area of function spaces of a community center, rather than controlling each function and area, is required. This kind of system makes it possible to decide programs freely within the limit of total floor area regulation by neighborhood's characteristics and residents'preference.

  • Nowadays, local governments have been developing an image to represent their regions' identity. These characters contain unlimited capabilities of utilization and advertising effect that adds to their high value. However, we must consider how effectively the image helps in representing its region because some characters have been produced upon timely basis without consistent long-term planning. This study is to investigate the image and motif of the local government characters from the consumer's perspective. The results are as follows: 1)The images employed by the local governments are not highly preferred and most regions select motifs from their local agricultural products and native plants. 2)The variables that affect the character of the local governments are such as beauty, identity, etc. In conclusion, in order to maximize the local government image, one must improve the design concepts, encourage advertisement of regional festivities and travel commercialization, and advocate the identity and beauty of the local area to the residents and other regional people.
