The dominant heating system used in Korean residential apartment buildings is a hydronic radiant floor heating system, known as the Ondol system. The most common control strategy applied to this traditional hydronic radiant system is a simple on-off control that intermittently supplies "hot water of a fixed temperature" at a "constant flow rate" to each room. However, the current problems with the aforementioned control are as follows: (1) since the simple on-off control is usually based on a one point measured temperature (a signal from a thermostat installed in a living room) in each dwelling unit, heating energy use for unoccupied rooms as well as a difference in temperatures between spaces (master bedroom, living room, bedroom1, bedroom2) can occur occasionally. (2) the most widely used residential water splitter has static valves, and is thus not able to change the flow rate to each room depending on the space heating load. In other words, the ratio of flow rates to rooms is fixed after construction, resulting in over- or under-heating and an improper use of energy. The aim of this paper is therefore to investigate the differences in the system's performance between control strategies in terms of the flow rate control and sensor location. It is shown that energy savings of control strategies are strongly influenced by occupant schedule.
This study aimed to analyze residential demands on intelligent systems for apartments and suggest space design directions of intelligent apartment complexes. Data collection was done through mail-in surveys by five respondent groups. Outcomes of this study would provide basic data for developing intelligent apartment housing corresponding to the residential characteristics and demands of the five respondent groups. The sample size for the questionnaire survey was 592. The types of the target residents in this study were classified into five categories; nuclear families, dual income families, single households and the handicapped needing special environmental supports, and workers at home who need the new home design with a home office. The primary findings of this study were as follows. 1) For the controllers of intelligent system, nuclear families preferred TV, single households prefer home-pad which is movable and provides access to the internet. Dual income families, the handicapped and workers at home preferred remote control panels. 2) For the desirable space for computer equipment, regardless of the types of target residents, bedroom and living room were preferred. 3) For the desirable space for a home theater system, most of respondent groups preferred living rooms, but many rather wanted to have media rooms only for this system.
This study aimed to examine the possibility of remodeled nursing home utilizing a closed school in Kunsan, where the number of closed schools increases and the ratio of elderly population grows. Major contents of research were understanding architectural characteristics of closed school and elderly housing in the sample area, and a suggestion of remodeling a closed school into nursing home. Conclusions can be summarized as follows; understanding the high ratio of elderly population and increases of closed schools in sample area, verification of overall possibility in remodeling a closed school into elderly facility, confirmation of availability in changing regular class room to residential rooms, and some proposals of principal points in floor planning - homelike atmosphere by small scaled residential units(10 persons), spatial hierarchy for residents' mental comfort, sliding door for accessibility, kitchen and dining space in residential unit for the residents' participation in houseworks.
The rural traditional houses in Taebaek mountainous regions play important roles in figuring out values and social aspects of past time including housing life. But due to the introduction of convenient facilities in the current housing life style after industrialized society, many transformations have been taken place even to exist rural traditional folk houses such as installation of new equipment and furniture, the arrangement and function change of rooms, expansion of residential area and etc. So this study aims to secure basic data to prepare installation standard of the convenient facilities as examining convenience facility installation status of the cultural asset designated as rural traditional house, and to identify the meaning and usage of major room of rural traditional houses in order to prepare the proper balances between its original form preservation and residents' convenience living.
The demand for residential space is encompassing diverse ranges to keep pace with the times. Due to the Increase in wealth, people today want more functional and physical well being as well as giving more weight to the emotional aspect in spatial planning. This study paid special attention on the psychological effect of color--especially difference of warm/cold temperature--and the individual variation on favorable colors. 1. For a communal space (e.g. living rooms), subjects showed high preference of YR range of colors and warm colors. 2. For an individual space (e.g. bedrooms), subjects showed high preference of GY range of colors and neutral colors. 3. For a sanitary space (e.g. bathrooms), subjects showed high preference of PB and B ranges of colors, and cold colors. 4. For all of the above spaces, subjects showed high preference of warm colors.
The aim of this study is to understand the plan characteristics used in unit floor planning mainly with examples of mixed-use residential tall buildings. The study will extract plan characteristics mainly using the graph expressive technique with essential information of the zoning function of residential space, rather than merely analyzing the various construction floor plans by type. The research method involves studying a group of 50-story buildings (over 200 meters) which were built between 2002 and 2008. Among 6 high-rise residential buildings case, we extract the most preferred type from 34 types, And then we simply classify rooms in 3 zoning, the master, living and children's zones. Finally we analyze the correlation among 3 simple zone and then extract some model type. The results of this study revealed three main findings. First, using the 3 functional zones, the shape of the main building and the unit floor plan can be analyzed simply even when they appear to be complicated. Second, we can extract common features when we analyze the unit floor plan from the viewpoint of the penetrability among 3 zoning. Third, we can extract 2 types when we analyze the unit floor plan from the viewpoint of 3 connected functional zoning concepts.
The purpose of this study is to identify the causes-effects of residential mobility and satisfaction. The research design employes a survey questionnaire for gathering a set of statistically-reasonable number of data among one million population of Ulsan metropolitan city. To make it more concrete, the attentions to be taken are on establishing (1) motives for moving (2) satisfaction factors in living, and (3) a relationship between houses and their environmental characteristics and the degree of satisfactions by them. The results of empirical analyses provide the following major findings: The most significant house-moving motivations were to achieve living-space at an affordable size or as wide as possible and to gain access to a comfortable and convenient environment. Per the residential satisfaction, highly respected factors were having good neighbors and active interactions with them and having good cooling-heating conditions, sunny rooms, and less noise and air pollution. Finally, the relation of house and its environment with the satisfaction indicated the following significant two: The higher the satisfaction, the shorter the duration of living and the history of construction. The less the satisfaction, the smaller the size of house and/or its complex.
The purpose of this study was to explore behavioral patterns on residential spaces such as the patterns of residential space usage and perception on residential spaces. A questionnaire survey and interview were conducted with 426 residents living in apartment with 3 bedrooms, stairway access, and 3-bay style in the City of Seoul, Busan, and Gwangju, during the month of September in 2004. The data was analyzed with frequency, factor analysis by using the SPSS 10.0 for windows, and with proc iml by using SAS. The major findings of this study were that: 1) The most typical activities in the Anbang are $\ulcorner$sleeping and getting dressed$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$family communication and T.V. watching$\lrcorner$, and $\ulcorner$private affairs$\lrcorner$ ; Anbang(master bedroom) has been perceived and used as couple's private area. 2) Living room was used as a multi-purpose room carrying out various activities such as $\ulcorner$family interaction$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$entertaining guest with meals$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$children's private affairs$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$private affairs$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$hobby activities$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$clothes management$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$couple interaction$\lrcorner$, and $\ulcorner$occasions$\lrcorner$. 3) The representative patterns of activities in dining-kitchen was food $\ulcorner$preparation$\lrcorner$, and the need for social interaction in DK has been growing. The patterns of residential space usages can be used to develop and evaluate the unit plan of Korean middle-size apartment.
The residential space of super high-rise buildings, having a form of a huge three-dimensional vertical city, affect the residents psychologically and qualitatively according to the line of flow. Because of these affects, the system of the line of flows is a very important factor. In this study, we recognize the super high-rise apartment's line of flow as a semantic network system based on case studies. And we also understand the mutual relationship by analyzing each space to recognize what effect it does on the residential environment. Furthermore, to bring up a better semantic network system for super high-rise apartment's line of flows is our goal. According to the case studies, the semantic network of the line of flow consists of 3 parts: the functional network, economical network and unit network. The functional network is composed of the 'need' and 'has', while the economical network includes variable walls that can be changed following the user's taste and eccentric positioned living rooms that protect personal privacy. Therefore the economical network started to appear while the personal value changed according to the improvement of the social condition. Finally, the unit network is a network that effects each unit that has ambiguous boundaries due to the appropriate arrangement between transitional spaces. And the unit network is based on the functional network.
